Race to the Top 4

Its OK - but the margins are so shit we have no breathing space because its so damn tight this season. We have away fixtures at United and Chelsea to play still, plus a dodgy one at Crystal Palace. The problem I have is that this team of ours can quite easily lose a game more so than the other teams - regardless of how the tale looks now.
I suggest you go back to where I listed all the games the others have to play too. All teams are going to lose surprising points and United and Chelsea have more 'Top 6' games to play than us too, meaning dropped points for someone.
And as Momo said, we have lost 3 PL games, United 5 games, Spurs 6 games and Chelsea 5 games ... you were saying ? 😉

So just for clarification, no more 4th place team missing out on CL if two other teams from same country win both euro competitions?

I dunno, but that was only a worry in the Leicester year coz they weren't gonna finish top four. It's kinda unlikely that anyone outside the top four is gonna win the CL this year isn't it?

Yeah but Arse would win that and finish outside the top 4, taking the 5th place.

I'm just saying that of the 5 teams from England still in the CL, it's unlikely that whoever ends up fifth will win it. I mean it's (1 in 16) * (1 in 5) or some shit, not even factoring in City being favourites. It's just damn unlikely.

Well that was shite.
Indeed.

That huge lead we have against Porto is even more important now.

Utd play Palace on the Monday before, which is against Hodgson so they'll probably roll over for them, & we play Porto on the Tuesday, so the fact we're not forced into playing our strongest side could help a great deal come the Utd match on Saturday.

And they have Sevilla the following week, which they have to have an eye on as well.

Yeah but City will twat Chelsea next week, so if we beat the Geordies 4th is all but sorted. Just go and piss on Manure's bonfire the week after.
I'd be happy with fourth, but I want second now.

Every other time in the PL we've come second then the expectations have killed us the next season. This season we get all the benefits of the confidence boost, but thanks to City being so strong, none of the negative aspects of that pressure should apply.

So yeah, I want second. I want Spurs, Utd, Chelsea & Arsenal to all see, in pure black & white unarguable mathematics, that we are better than them all. Cos we fucking are.

A new big ears trophy would be nice as well.

Spurs are grinding out results whilst they aren't playing well which is frustrating. Chelsea still stuttering now too. It is looking nervy but hopefully 3-4 games time we will have a 6-7 point buffer over 4th / 5th and can leave those three to fight it out.

As long as we don't lose to Utd and Chelsea away otherwise it's all up in the air again.

True because as of now we aren't, hopefully by the end of May we will be.

Sevilla will be a far bigger game for them than us.
I wouldn't be surprised if they rested players against us.

Regardless.
We worry about our games and we will be fine.

In hindsight yesterdays result is fine. 3 more points above Chelsea and a massive 12 points ahead of Arsenal if City beat them on Thursday.
Always want Utd to lose, but I can live with a Chelsea loss.

A gap between the top 4 and Chelsea and Arsenal is a good thing obviously.

I rather take that City win in the weekend. Hope they rest a few thursday. Give Arsenal some hope so they don't give up and only focus on EL.

Oh he'll change the side alright, cos he'll want at least ten of his players to defend the entire match, so a fair few of their players wont get near the side.

He'll play shithouse fouling football, and then hope for the counter

I reckon he'll play rashford or martial up top against us.

Arsenal aren't going to win, or even make the final, in the EL. Quite a few teams ahead fo them : A.Madrid, Lazio, Zenit, Lyon, Dortmund .. all in form and surely would put Arse to the sword.

I kinda wish Chelsea would make it rather than Spurs.

Chelsea with a new fancy manager, loads of spends and no Europe......well look what happened last year.

Spurs will make it. But 4th is between Jose and Conte so it would be Nice if Chelsea nicked that one.

Very disappointed with Palace and Woy last night, United dropping points would have been lovely. I still think it's going to be tight, because Chelsea are still a good team and Conte's a good manager. Their biggest problem is their striking situation, with Conte not seeming to trust any of his options much, and loaning out another.

As everyone knows, a successful title challenge is almost always reliant on having that reliable Premier league goalscorer, who can get you around 20 goals.

As we can see from the table, the Top 4 all have one thing in common: they dominate the scoring charts. So there's Salah, Kane, Aguero as the top 3, all with 20+ goals already, followed by Sterling and Lukaku. Neatly and unsurprisingly reflecting the top teams.

Vardy is the only real outlier, scoring 13 goals so far, along with Firmino - who looks like he might finally get close to that "magic 20" figure that we need from him. It's great that we can match City, and get TWO players near the top of the scoring charts, although obviously Salah's contribution has been incredible and unprecedented.

Chelsea's problem is evident, in that their top scorer is Hazard, with 11. Morata is one behind. So losing Costa, that vital 20 goals striker, has cost them very dearly, as predicted by many.

I think it's more than just Costa's goals - he was just the striker any club in England needs to lead the line. Fierce, uncompromising, harassing defenders 24-7 and a winner. Morata is a good player, but he's not what Costa is ... and when he's low on confidence & goals, that's when you really see Chelsea stuttering.
