There's a tactical problem here.
We've been playing a more traditional front 3 this year with Jota as a more classic no. 9 than a false 9 in Firmino.
To accommodate that, we've done a couple of things to get more control in midfield:
1. Create an overload down the right with Salah, Henderson and Trent almost as an auxiliary midfielder
2. Have Thiago take on Firmino's playmaking from a deeper position
We don't have either Trent or Thiago today, so for me, playing Jota against such a tactically adept side like City is a problem.
Milner doesn't have the legs to create that right-sided overload, and we don't have a deeper playmaker in midfield.
The front 3 are just being left too far forward without supply. Which is why you're seeing Matip trying to break lines continuously and move the ball forward.
The solution to this is being Firmino on for Jota, and play the false 9 system. I'd also bring Gomez on for Milner.
