Its the predictableness of it all that is getting everyone down. We are stumbling like a drunken first week fresher towards the finish line.

I find comments like "the same old shite" a bit weird though, when we're 3rd in the league after 36 games and have the faith of CL football in our own hands. Who wouldnt have said yes to that before the season started? And be happy with it?

We're on 70 points after 36 games. Thats a good season. No matter were you dropped and won the points.

I don't think people are surprised at all, I just think that people are sick of losing/dropping points to teams like Southampton. I don't really buy the squad thing as any excuse and that we should accept that that's where we are. We spent relatively big in the Summer, people can talk about net spend, blah blah, but we whacked nearly £60m on two Premiership players and we got lucky with the contract Matip had, if we're bang average then we can hardly bemoan transfers and squad depth, it's exactly our own fault we've struggled. That starts with previous years spending and ends with last Summers transfers and Klopp's tactics and shortcomings. We spent money and we have a relatively good team that we should have been built on with more than the returns that we've had from Klavan, Karius, Wijnaldum and Grujic.

The teams we've lost to this season all have one thing in common, they're all teams that have struggled this season and they're exactly the sort of teams that anyone with remote hopes of CL football, SHOULD be beating. That includes your Southampton's at home. People aren't surprised, we're just sick of the same old shite. Squad depth is neither here nor there, essentially we were only missing Mane today and once again we didn't have enough with what we had. Three of Klopp's other signings can't get a look in and he continues to sit there for 60-70 minutes before deciding on the fucking obvious.

On the other hand Mark, if we get lucky, we could end the season with a CL place and a new stadium. We may yet limp over the line. And this after ending the previous season out of Europe but still getting to a European final with a manager who has been here a relatively short time.

Our full backs offer nothing going forward, and it seriously inhibits our attacking play. It's so important for your full-backs to get beyond the penalty box with the ball to stretch teams, and move the midfield 20 yards closer to the goal. Clyne is very tidy, but he lacks ability to press into the remaining 25 yards, and Milner is about as ineffective an attacking full back as there is in the league.

Given the rest of our side all fancies themselves as a number 10, the need for our full backs to get far forward is imperative. We get nothing from them.
Indeed. Something I've mentioned before. The reason we look more dangerous when AA comes on (and Mane plays) is his pace and ability to actually get behind the defence and put in a cross. However I've no doubt this will be rectified this Summer. We've seen Klopp looking at youngsters (Ojo etc.) in the hope one of them could do this and he has brought on Moreno for his pace in attack once or twice. It's something we lack that they are no doubt keenly aware of.

We had a few counter attacks against Southampton and they all broke down because we lack pace and didn't (or couldn't) break with the numbers and energy levels we did earlier in the season.
Not that we lacked pace per se (though that was obvious once or twice) but more so we lacked confidence .... or were simply too tired. The minutes played this season stat is hugely valid since previously solid performers are now showing obvious signs of tiredness (Firmino & Wijnaldum are 2nd and 3rd in that table).

The number of times in recent matches when we should have continued the attack (even 2 vs. 3 or 4), due to the disorganisation in the opposing ranks offering an opportunity, even if our attackers were still out-numbered, has to be put down to either a lack confidence in our recent form or tiredness, or both.

Haven't read the thread yet... but if Lucas and Can could never start a game together, that would be great. So much play going through these two plodders. Grujic did more in 3 minutes as a midfield attacking threat than any of Lucas/ Can/ Gini did all game.

The only times we looked even remotely threatening where when we have a 5-10 minute stint of Firmino through the middle. Origi needs to go back to Melwood for the summer - he is down on his form and not adding anything to us at this stage. Get a youngster on the wing and keep Firmino through the middle where he excels.

On the other hand Mark, if we get lucky, we could end the season with a CL place and [hl]a new stadium[/hl]. We may yet limp over the line. And this after ending the previous season out of Europe but still getting to a European final with a manager who has been here a relatively short time.
What did I miss? Does 3rd or 4th place qualify for a brand new ground?

Very important point in the bag. Can be decisice if we beat West Ham next. Are we capable of beating West Ham? Sure hell we are.

Didn't see all of the game but from what I did see, I hope we don't buy any more Southampton shithouses - they were just intent to shut us out.

We are incapable of breaking teams down or even creating chances against them, which just compounds the misery and encourages others to do it. However, it would be nice if teams had an element of ambition and anyone who plays for them who is content to do it can fuck right off
