Phillips has a great game but it seemed to play to his strengths allowing him to use his aerial prowess.
I am not so convinced that a team that keeps the ball on the deck might not expose him a bit more.
Though I cant really say that I am overly familiar with his strengths and weaknesses.

I think he's fine with most of our game. The one thing I'd be (pleasantly) surprised about is if he'd play a Gomez or VVD-type ball out of defence. I might be wrong, but I don't think he has that in him. But as for the rest of it, he reminds me a teensy bit of Carra in his style.

I thought the same re Carra. Getting his head to the ball first no matter what

If Thiago proves a reliable option in midfield (injury wise) then it's much less of an issue cos either he or Hendo can always offer an out ball & spread play.

Only a real issue against better sides, but hopefully we will have the personnel to deal with it.

The biggest problem is the amount of games & lack of rest periods.

IMO you can't play kids that age every three days & expect them to keep up the concentration levels, especially at centre back.

I'd gladly be proven wrong, cos I wouldn't have thought TAA could have done to at the level he has, but I suspect he's the exception proving the rule, just as Gerrard was when he came through.

Yes, West Ham played the long ball game which played to his strengths but I have noticed more teams doing that just to get out of our press so there might be hope for NP yet. However during preseason he was all over the place when the opponents started running at him, which i suspect led to him losing his place to R.Williams.

There was a couple of times in the second half where he was a bit too focused on fouling than defending, but he got away with it. Otherwise, he played really well.

Am I the only one who thinks Salah did a bit of play acting?

In the seconds between the kick and the fall, I suspect Salah surmised the ref was going to ignore it, thought of the abuse he'd get all week for being a blind cunt, and being such a god damn wonderful human being, he decided that he would take the abuse for his delayed fall instead, to save the referee.

Pretty shite of MOTD to call him out as someone who went down to easily.
He gets stamped, there is obvious contact and he goes down. Masuaku doesnt even contest it, he knew he had fouled him.

Can't get enough of this. It's not just the pass, Jota's darting run is so purposeful, it practically forces Shaqiri's pass – but he's ready for it and delivers it perfectly. This is the most beautiful thing in football, seeing 2 players on the same wavelength cut through an entire defense.

This is how the MOTD team differentiate between being a diver and bringing notice of a foul

Glad Phillips was given a chance especially as he played well against the Bitters last season

Jones was frustrating last night and Bobby needs a break (for his own benefit), Shaq and Jota proved to be game changers but their introduction appeared to help Mane as well

I'm not a subscriber to the times to read the full article but is there really a need to highlight Mo nevermind link the penalty to someone's death.

Seriously, that’s some link and I thought Cas was one of the better ones. I haven’t read the article but the headline alone would do, Times is now in the click bait territory then...

The way Shaqiri shuffles innocently across the box to create space is brilliant, too. Nobody thinks he's a threat. Taking it on his left foot also gives Jota a fraction of a second longer to get in behind. It's certainly one of the the most satisfying goals this calender year.

Cascarino: I'm surprised he didn't also link Jesus, Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Jade Goody and Captain/Sir/Lord Tom Moore, the daft sanctimonious twat:

I am a Liverpool supporter but I hated to see Mohamed Salah dive to win the penalty against West Ham. In the week when we lost Nobby Stiles, to see a player do what Salah did makes me think that the game as it was played by the England team of 1966 will be gone completely within the next ten years. Imagine showing that generation an example of what they would have considered cheating being rewarded in that way. The culture started to change during my playing career and now when I watch kids football they are all as good at diving as they are at everything else. And when I say good at it, I mean they go down in a way that may deceive a referee into giving a free kick.

That was partly why I never did it — I was no good at it, and I would have looked ridiculous if I’d tried. But my real problem is it leaves a nasty taste in the mouth. I honestly feel it is turning people off the game — and before you call me Casasaurus the dinosaur, I know plenty of young people who feel the same way. Yes there was contact between Arthur Masuaku and Salah, but nowhere near enough to knock him off his stride. By comparison, there was greater contact last weekend when Sergio Agüero put his arm around the assistant referee Sian Massey-Ellis and tugged her a little — there was more force than when Masuaku caught Salah’s boot.

Yet Massey-Ellis barely flinched and did not make an issue of Agüero’s actions after the game, despite many feeling she was entitled to. The same level of contact would have sent Salah tumbling over.

Maybe 'in the spirit of Nobby Stiles' Salah should spend the next game trying to break opponents' legs.

You can only assume Cascarino never actually saw Nobby Stiles play !
