So Newcastle end the January transfer window with the additions of Bruno Guimaraes, Kieran Trippier, Chris Wood, Dan Burn and Matt Targett on loan. Is this enough to avoid the drop? The first 2 are a clear upgrade on what they have, but I’m not sure all together it adds up into a coherent puzzle.

It'll depend on how well Eddie Howe can integrate that number of new signings into the squad and the system. If that goes well, IMO Watford and Norwich are definitely poorer sides while Burnley and possibly even the blueslime could turn out to be as well.

I’d say they’ll all pretty close.

Just think - we replaced Suarez, Alonso & Torres with Balotelli, Acquilani & Carroll.

Carroll was - without doubt - the worst in terms of actual talent. Also, palpably did not want to be in a red shirt. The guy is barely better than what you'd expect in a Sunday league. So many of us could see it - Shocking decision to sign him.

.... Trippier is the perfect profile for them. Good players that want a good pay day, players nearing the end of their shelf life and wanting a good pay off / last big contract that won't be too arsed if they are relegated and need a year in the Championship (they'll bounce right back up but it may delay the project by a year). I can see them making 4 or 5 of those transfers in a bid to stay up. But having to integrate those players into a team with so many new arrivals isn't going to guarantee results. They are still one of the favourites for relegation in my book.

Well I guessed the numbers right and those 5 transfers may be enough to swing the balance their way. It's close down there. The only one of those that are certain in my book is Watford. Burnley have games in hand but I make them second favourites. Newcastle or Norwich to join them.
