Napoli, Roma and Seville are the best teams left in this.

Id love to play Napoli in the final.
Be like Obi Wan vs Luke.

I don't see how anyone can not put winning a trophy as a priority.. tbh..

But given modern times you would have to consolidate the league position first..

4th place is not a trophy though...

The Europa League has to be taken seriously regardless..

Either winning a trophy would be your priority or you'd consolidate the league position first. By all means have a right go at both but, when push comes to shove, only one can be top priority, and that should be the one which most helps our quest to get back to the top and stay there. Which means the league. Prioritising "a trophy - any trophy" seems superficial and short-termist to me.

I dont think people who voted 4th (me included) realise that winning the UEFA cup would qualify you for CL. In which case i would take winning the UEFA cup.
Be honest with you I wish'd they bring back the Cup Winners Cup and be done with the UEFA cup.

I realised, and my vote absolutely stays the same. It's through the league that we'll get back to the top, not through a Cup win here or there.

I feel the same. If it was just a straight choice between the cup win and 4th with no effect on anything else then I'd of course choose the cup. But finishing 4th would mean we have had a very strong 2nd half of the season and would be in great position going into next season. Cup win doesn't necessarily mean anything in that sense.

In this day and age, champions league qualification is a must to compete..

winning the europa league if all else fails in the league will help without a doubt....

We competed last year without being in the CL for a few years. It's not a must, the most important thing is making wise decisions at the top. Spending the money we have wisely and employing the right people.

Obviously, qualifying for the CL helps a lot, but it won't win us any trophies, and it won't make up for bad decisions.

The monies for Champions league qualification is double of last season this time around..

The goal posts inevitabley would further widen... I think its absoloutley essential for this club to gain Champions league qualification this time around to compete in the long term and keep up with the 'elite' clubs..

They've doubled before, and they'll double again. It wouldn't be great if we didn't qualify this year, but it wouldn't mean we should pack our bags and give up.

We already earn more than 99% of clubs in Europe, as does everyone in the Premier league. We don't spend our money half as well as lots of clubs, if we did, we'd have no issues.

We are getting better at it, but there's still a long way to go.

I agree.. to an extent. But 60 million is a huge differance in terms of monies to compete with the elite..

Also qualifying for the Champions League for the 2nd year running will also instill confidence in players that we can compete at the highest level consistantly, therefore help put us in the position to attract the right kind of players..

I bet Sterling will be off in the summer if we are not in the Champions League next season.. If we are, I bet he stays... Probably because we can then be in the position to give him the pay packet he wants..

If Bournemouth make it PL they will be a richer club than Benfica. So we already have our hands in the honnybucket. If we fail to compete it is not down to CL money alone.

To compete with the elite long term you have to be playing with the elite consistantley..

TBH.. thats where the club should be...

Winning for money to keep up with the supposed elite is the wrong approach. Just win trophies and get as high as possible in the league. The rest will take care of itself.

...which is exactly why we need to make the league, not one-off knockout competitions, our priority.
I know what you trying to say but I believe it's mis-guided. We should be cultivating a winning mentally irrespective of which competition we're playing in. To put it to extremes, why should we put all our 'best' players in the league games and then put the B team for the cups? It means those players don't really get the chance to improve or experience the marathon that is the league.

It also means those players realise they have one shot in 2 or so weeks to make Rodgers believe they should be a regular or in the A-team.

It's also not realistic to constantly use the same a-team in all competitions. This will just increase the possibility of injury to our best players which will result in them being out for a longer period.

So, to conclude my ramblings, why not just cultivate a winning mentality rather than prioritising the competitions.

I don't think we're really at odds on this, because I wouldn't disagree with much of that and, as I tried to say earlier on (obv.not clearly enough) I'm not saying we should give up on the Europa League. I guess the nub of this is in your point (which I agree with) that we can't put out the same First XI every time. That's going to mean an occasional selection problem (it needn't be more than occasional IMO) regarding which players to play in which games, and IMO when those come along our priority should be getting top 4.
