Players tell Rafa Benitez: Bring Michael Owen back
Steve Bates
Michael Owen will be heading back to Anfield - if Liverpool's senior stars have anything to do with it.

Influential Kop players want boss Rafa Benitez to gamble on bringing back Owen to Merseyside in the same way he gave Robbie Fowler one final Anfield fling.

That move, with Fowler leaving Manchester City in January 2006 on a free, was rapturously greeted by Liverpool fans - and the Kop faithful would also welcome back Owen with open arms.

Owen, 29, is also on a free having failed to commit himself to a new deal with the Toon. It's understood he doesn't see life in the Championship as an option.

Luxury The star spent eight glorious years at Anfield scoring 118 goals in 216 games before leaving for Real Madrid in an £8million deal five years ago. He moved to Newcastle for £16m a year later.

The striker has been consistently overlooked by England boss Fabio Capello who privately believes Newcastle hasn't been the right environment for Owen.

Now, with no transfer fee to pay, top Liverpool players reckon there's no reason NOT to move for Owen - especially as Benitez is short on strike power to support Fernando Torres in attack.

Tottenham and Everton are both watching Owen's situation closely. But if Benitez listens to his own dressing room Liverpool's one-time goal-den boy could make a shock return to Anfield.

I'm with Jimmy Tarbuck on this, Owen is going to be a LFC player again this summer.

No names mentioned I see. Well, only Gerrard and Carra are left from those days, eh?

Tummytuck is obviously trying to rumour monger. Who in their right mind from today's team would want a washed out player - who could barely get into a relegated Toon team back?

If the Reds are serious about winning the league next year, Owen is NOT the answer.

And asides from a nice 'warm' feeling at seeing Fowler back in a red shirt, his transfer home proved utterly futile.

Haha

He's well past it now.

At the top level Owen doesn't have much to offer these days.

Really?

Yes, Rafa Benitez, the great sentimentalist. If he thinks he can get Owen to warm the bench most of the time, and be a useful impact player/squad player then he might consider it. A striker that can so wholly fade out of games isn't going to work in our current system of play, so if he did come it'd be as an option. That would involve the wage bill coinciding with just such a function. Does Owen care more about playing and competing and fighting at a high level, or saying the right things, getting a larger paycheck, being center of attention, for a worse team? If we, or some other team with aspirations did sound him out in this sort of capacity, it'd be interesting how he'd respond. I'd hope he'd realise it could define whether his career was essentially over years ago without him realizing it.

Owen might be done, but he's not burnt to a crisp done like Fowler was at the end. It isn't clear to Owen that he's done, but its clear he was miserable playing amongst the shit, and lacked the drive or skill set to do anything about it. Understandable, but it doesn't speak well of him. It isn't clear to a whole host of midtable teams who could still claim him as a banner purchase that he's so wholly finished and incapable of playing at the top level like Fowler was, so it's a ridiculous comparison.

Either way, Rafa certainly wouldn't be swayed by the players.

Owen has worked things once again where its up to him what happens next, which may well not involve us at all. He'll be filthy rich either way, I wonder if he has a sensible estimation of the marginal utility of the highest paying offer.

I'd have some doubts about that too.

He'd be on a free, so i don't see the problem with it personally.

[/quote]

when you factor in the wages he'd be far from 'free'.

Well of course thats always true Spidey.

"If" he was to have the chance to come back, then it's a given that he'd also have to take a huge reduction to his wages.

He's 29. Mascher couldnt get a game with West Ham before he came to us. He's free apparently which surprises me. And finally class is permanent

if owen took a HUGE pay cut maybe rafa would consider him but I can't see owen doing that.

poor the nicky butt 🙁

If we can get him on a pay per minute contract, then it might be a possibility. He can come in to play the last 10 minutes of each game when he is fit?

I think the reasons for masher not getting a game and owen not getting are 'slightly' different...

So are hamstring tears and the desire for agents to squeeze as much as possible from a dying brand before it goes away for good.

If the management were that divvy to get want him back, he should only be offered a 'pay as you play' contract.

Take it or leave it.
