an almost ten year contract until he’s 34? that’s a commitment of something like £180m with 40% of that going out when he’s over 30.

seems like city might be willingly paying a PR tax on this one, hey everyone it’s cool we’re going nowhere come join the next wave of success.

must be nice to have your superstar players absolutely locked down

there absolutely will be relegation clauses in there. Probably gets a pay bump if they dont' qualify for the CL

So, the Haaland contract
Firstly, he'll already be on a decent whack.
He doesn't sign a new deal, removing exit clauses, without a pay bump.
He doesn't sign a 9.5 year deal that doesn't have pay increments included in it.
Context, over the 10 years to 2023, LFC's (total) salary bill has increased by 180%. That's an effective 11% per annum. NB - I've used our's as City's wage growth over the period is unreliable due to squad sizes and deliberate manipulation - their's is 6% p.a. over the same period.
I have no idea what the going rate for a player like Haaland will be in 2-3 years time.
How could you possibly know what you should be paying whatever kind of player Haaland will be in 8-9 years' time?
This is utter madness. It's Chelsea on crack.

yea feels like sasquatch is well advised, the only risk he has is if city become a wengers arsenal type side who just want top 4 every season. might find it difficult to extricate himself in that case. but that’s only a concern if he wants to win things.

There must surely be some kind of reasoning behind it... surely? City have generally been fairly shrewd operators, why would they do something pointlessly stupid?

Best guess is that they were spooked by one or more of his exit clauses. Not seen anything public, but it's often the case that these things are time-limited, so I'd guess that there was a chance he could head off to Spain this summer for less than they think he's worth and they wanted to get rid of that. The news that leaked quite pointedly talked about there being no such clauses in his new deal.
It's also possible that they were treating it as a routine extension (he was half-way through his original deal) and just decided to go big to get it done quickly.
City have been a selling club in recent years, so I think they probably have a natural leaning towards protecting the future transfer value of their players. This one is off the scale, but arguably so is the player concerned.

Can't see him (anyone) signing this without a get out of jail card.

The Premier League has dropped the outstanding charges against Everton (an interest issue left over from their last appeal).
Cowards.
I think they would have won, if I'm reading it right.
