Actually, Xabi won 2 trophies in 5 years.
Pepe's won 1 in 5 years.

So the point of him joining later isn't that relevant. In any case, the critical point is that Xabi was an integral part of why we won those two trophies, and also an integral part of why we had our best ever run in the league in the last decade. Great though Pepe is, he's not as integral to the side as Xabi was - more to the fact that the centre of the park is always likely to be a more critical position than the goalkeeper's position.

You're probably right about Pepe being sold for triple his value though. As I said, this comparison would be interesting to make 5 years down the line (provided Pepe stays). Right now, it's hard to argue against Xabi.
You are right for his on the field skills and his position, but for me and my opinion (which is obviously irrelevant) it's pepe.
i just enjoy pepe for his leadership skills. He screams at the defence like a captain. We need players like that all over the pitch. xabi seemed to quiet and hapy to get on with his role. Which i respect as he was obviously good at it. I just think attitude and character and it's importance on and off the pitch can never be overstated
I always thought Xabi had a quiet leadership about him. So many games where he stepped up in Gerrard's absence and ran the show - the derby, Juventus are games I can think off the top of my head. Also, the CL final, what I loved about him is that he actually baby sat Traore and picked the ball of his feet. That's a sort of leadership that often goes unnoticed, and very wrongly so IMO.

Pepe is fucking awesome and loves the club. Xabi was awesome and didn't. Pepe wins.

I know this will probably open up something that's been discussed to death, but I'd like to see Pepe's love for the club after he'd been offered to half of Europe.

And to say that he didn't love the club for a person who STILL attends games at Anfield is grossly unfair.

whilst that may be true, it was also around the time that one of his friends had just had another child. Now whether he came to the ground for his love for the club, or because he was invited by members of the squad whilst he was over reamains to be seen.

didn't even write a goodbye letter the cunt

He wouldn't have been offered to anybody if he hadn't been coasting for two seasons. I can't imagine Reina playing so far below his best for so long that we'd contemplate getting rid.

Pepe Reina has compared the Liverpool's season to that of a Formula One race - and he believes it's time to do some overtaking.

The Reds have been overtaken by many teams this season and they are showing no signs of overtaking especially after their 2-1 defeat at Blackpool on Wednesday.

Reina, who kept just five cleansheet in the league this season, has urged his team to put 2010 behind them and turn their 'turbo' engines on for the remaining of the season.

"I see it as being like a Formula One race where we have already allowed a lot of cars to go ahead and now we have to overtake them. Our lower limit is fourth place and we have to start moving," the Spaniard was quoted as saying in talkSPORT.

"It will not be easy because we have dropped so many points in the opening part of the season, but it is up to us to keep fighting.

"Now is the time to change it. Because of the size of the club Liverpool should be fighting at the top of the table, not the bottom and that has to be our aim.

The 28-year-old also reflected on the past year, which he claims it's his worst year at Anfield since joining the club in 2005.

But despite the Reds far from reclaiming their glory days, Reina still hopes he will one day win the Premier League with the club.

"You could say that since my arrival at Liverpool, 2010 was possibly the worst year because we have not been where we wanted to be and to miss out on the Champions League was a massive blow.

"I still dream about winning the Premier League for Liverpool one day."

The last time the Reds won the league was back in 1990 under Kenny Dalglish, who has returned to take charge of the club on a temporary basis.

But it would be asking too much of the legend to repeat the same feat this season - or even the next few to come.

Just saw this thread. Pepe is Benitez's signing, Alonso his second best most probably.

Alonso quite clearly loves the club, and wasn't there something like he wasn't allowed to write a goodbye letter because of the transfer request?

I actually feel a bit bad for him, playing with a collection of shit defenders.

He'd probably be no worse off without a back line.

Alonso was probably his most important signing.

Torres was the best because there have been very very few players in the last ten years that have given us anything like the childlike excitement Torres has.

that's why I say alonso is rafa's best signing. the difference between the team after he left is stark.

Torres was the best Rafa signing hands-down.
No he wasn't. Fabulous player at his best, but too many absences and dips in form to get that title ahead of Pepe.
Exactly.

Torres has had 1.5 good seasons.

Reina's got 5 or 6 behind him already, and cost £6M
To me the best signing is the signing of the best player. Torres is a superstar player, who was not a superstar at the time he was signed. That's as good a signing as it gets. Whether he stays or gets sold for a profit, he will have brought a lot more value to this club than Reina, with all due respect and admiration I have for Pepe. Superstars have much more power and value that simply good players. How many T-shirts did Torres sell? How much did he raise the profile of the club? How many new fans has he brought to the club? Players from around the world dream about playing in the same team as Torres (and Gerrard), managers want to coach him. Signing a player like Torres has a potential to change the direction of any club. Losing him, in the long run, would also be a bigger deal than losing Reina, and even than losing Xabi.

A woman scorned...

There's varying criteria here though. The actual best player Benitez has signed in terms of ability would probably be Torres. The most iconic, important and pivotal at the time in terms of revitalising our team would be the Alonso signing. The best value for money in terms of ability, length of time at the club, and relationship with the fans all taken into account would be Reina.

Why are you so bothered about my screen name? I don't really care what it it tbh, as long as it's not my real name.

And that's as bad as I'll go, not like I'm dropping any F bombs!

I do too, most days. But some days I blame Alonso himself. Some days I hate him, others...*breaks down*

Anita, a mate of mine told me that somebody kept sending roses to Alonso's box, anonymously. His wife got really pissed off or something and started refusing to go to games or something like that. I've only just put 2 and 2 together.

Is there anything you want to share with the forum?

even though xabi was in 'cruise control' it's obvious in retrospect he was still indispensable to the team. never know what you've got till it's gone.

I never really bought into the assumption he was that bad. He was still one of our better players, and the thought of replacing him with an older, shitter, more expensive Gareth Barry was fucking ludicrous and incredibly insulting. No wonder he got pissed off.

That's the gist of it,yeah.

He was not as fantastic as he used to be in his first few seasons, perhaps.

But that was still far FAR better than anyone else we'd have gotten (and did get).

He had 4 seasons with us didn't he?

1st season - Excellent
2nd season - Okay but was injured for half of it
3rd season - Not so great (hence the touting around to any fucker with 2 pennies to rub together)
4th season - Best player at the club

In my opinion he was still good in those two middle seasons, he was just significantly better in his first and last.
