http://www.dailystar.co.uk/football/view/170022/Liverpool-No1-Pepe-Reina-I-m-not-going-anywhere/

PEPE REINA has given under-pressure Liverpool the perfect new year’s present by insisting he has no intention of leaving the club.

Keeper Reina, 28, is a £20million target for Manchester United as they look to find a long-term replacement for Edwin van der Sar – and has also been heavily linked with Arsenal and Real Madrid.

But the Spaniard, who signed a mammoth six-year contract only last season, says he is determined to stay put.

Reina insisted: “I’m tired of rumours linking me with many teams in England and abroad.

“I am a man of my word and commitment. I will honour my contract with Liverpool.

“Stories of these offers are not true. I have not spoken to anyone – ever – and I am 100 per cent a Liverpool player.â€

Reina is desperate to return to winning ways at Anfield.

He added: “Since I’ve been here I’ve found an incredible passion, more than I thought from Spain.

“Liverpool as a club is sacred, it is something special.

“Being Liverpool’s goalkeeper is a privilege. For now I just want to win trophies for them.â€

I'm quite scared at just how much I love this man.

Reina replaced Didi Hamann as the foreign 'Scouse' player in the team. I hope he's our next Captain and he becomes a legend to be name amongst the very best.

What a player he is. Benitez's best signing by miles.

Top player, top professional, top man - and you don't by any means always find all three in one individual. It's absolutely vital we keep him, preferably for the rest of his career.

*large doses of man love*

alonso, but pepe is a close second.

Pepe was his best signing, consistently brilliant and we'd be lost without

i think Kuyt can be considered there too.. no matter if you rate him or not.. you cannot deny the effort he puts in and the respect he has for the fans and the club itself.

I think had alonso still been on the books last season we would have cantered to 4th.
it's a matter of opinion (imho) I think alonso was rafa's best signing, I certainly think it would have been very difficult to reach the CL final without him.

True, for me I love pepe as a man and a player so i'm always going to rate him higher, alonso was a fine player but I never warmed to him as a man

Alonso was important and a very good signing, but you've only to cast your mind back to how Carson played against Juventus to see that Pepe was always the more important signing.

interesting. I viewed alonso as everything a liverpool player should aspire to as player and as a man. brilliant on the pitch and consummate proffesional off the pitch.

I view the middle of the park as the most important part of the pitch. if you lose the midfield you more than likely will lose the game and gerrard aside alonso is the best midfield player we've had in 20 years. pepe is argubly the best keeper we've EVER had but as I said I view the CM as the most important part of the pitch. my favorite ever liverpool player is a midfielder rather than a striker or a keeper.

Until the bust-up with Rafa I'd have agreed with that. I know we have different views on where the balance of blame lies in that respect, so there's probably no point in rehashing it now.

I have to agree with neil here. I love Pepe but I loved Xabi more. Why wouldn't you warm to him as a person? He was the consummate professional, always respectful to the club, and a truly wonderful player. Also, I don't think anyone has changed my perspective of football as much as Xabi as. An unselfish genius of a footballer, and growing up watching him, I wanted to change the way I played to mirror him.

He's tied with Hyypia as my favourite Liverpool player ever. And god, I miss them both.

Torres was the best Rafa signing hands-down.
[/quote]

Agreed although Alonso and Pepe aren't that far behind.

Rafa should have concentrated on buying expensive Spanish players, his record regarding those was pretty much flawless.

No he wasn't. Fabulous player at his best, but too many absences and dips in form to get that title ahead of Pepe.

If all the players showed the type of commitment that Pepe does, we'd be a much improved club both on and off the field.

Exactly.

Torres has had 1.5 good seasons.

Reina's got 5 or 6 behind him already, and cost £6M

Alonso all the way for me. For two reasons:

i) Won two trophies - against Pepe's 1 and Torres' 0 (and as part of the heartbeat of the side alongside Gerrard, Carra and Hyypia)
ii) Sold for triple the value for which he was bought

5 years down the line I might have a different opinion (provided Pepe and Torres stay) but it's Xabi pretty easily at the moment.

with regards to your points:
i) its unfair on pepe really because he was bought later.
ii) I'm sure reina would be sold for triple the value now. And considering he's a keeper its quite hard to bump his value

Actually, Xabi won 2 trophies in 5 years.
Pepe's won 1 in 5 years.

So the point of him joining later isn't that relevant. In any case, the critical point is that Xabi was an integral part of why we won those two trophies, and also an integral part of why we had our best ever run in the league in the last decade. Great though Pepe is, he's not as integral to the side as Xabi was - more to the fact that the centre of the park is always likely to be a more critical position than the goalkeeper's position.

You're probably right about Pepe being sold for triple his value though. Why I used that as a point was to preclude the argument that Xabi was more expensive.

As I said, this comparison would be interesting to make 5 years down the line (provided Pepe stays). Right now, it's hard to argue against Xabi.

You are right for his on the field skills and his position, but for me and my opinion (which is obviously irrelevant) it's pepe.
i just enjoy pepe for his leadership skills. He screams at the defence like a captain. We need players like that all over the pitch. xabi seemed to quiet and hapy to get on with his role. Which i respect as he was obviously good at it. I just think attitude and character and it's importance on and off the pitch can never be overstated

Pepe is fucking awesome and loves the club. Xabi was awesome and didn't. Pepe wins.
