Never has that been more wrong. Yesterday it was 1 year to the date since the last time we were awarded a penalty at Anfield in the league. Thats a pretty bizarre stat given how much time we spend in the oppositions penalty box, how many incidents that happen and how many times we feel like we should have had a penalty.

This season we have been awarded 1 penalty at Selhurst Park. Bournemouth have gotten 6, Utd 4 and Brighton 4. Palace has been awarded 9 penalties at Selhurst Park since January 2018, while we have been awarded 6 penalties in the last 4 seasons at Anfield.

Thoughts? Are we less likely to get decisions our way, or is just down to luck?

I don't think we've had that many clear cut penalty situations this season to complain

Hard to know for sure but one could see how referees, knowing the strength of our home support, might go out there with a mindset of "I'm not going to let those fans pressurise me into giving their team favourable decisions". It's a bit like players known (rightly or wrongly) as divers not getting penos they should have been awarded.

Honestly that's not really the point - all teams win penalties that shouldn't have been given. Those stats make very surprising reading, especially, as was stated, considering the amount of time we spend in the opposition's box. I'm sure there are more than a few tackles on 'Salah' alone that should have been given but weren't. It's a shocking stat overall. It must be reverse bias as JJ said, by trying to be overly 'fair' they overdo it.

It could also be down to the pace of our attacks. We're already in the box before the fat bastard of a referee has completed his turning circle, and so they're too far away from being able to make out which player is which let alone if a foul was committed.

Probably a bit of both, as JJ's point makes below, re: confirmation bias.

It's also possibly partly due to how we play. It seems you're more likely to get a penalty when there's an obvious high-speed collision that is judged as a foul. You know the sort of thing, a flying winger taken down by the defender or keeper as they run clear.

We have pacy players, but we have a more intricate style with shorter passes and flicks to create space in tight areas, plus defences sit deep against us, reducing that space. So there's less obvious spectacular take-downs, and also more bodies in the way to discern foul play?

Maybe, I dunno.

Or maybe we simply don't have a lot of players like Ashley Young or Lamela who deliberately look for contact in the penalty area.
