I doubt Fabio will want two pixie strikers in his squad. Defoe is fitter, faster and in better form - he'll surely be the one. Then Crouch offers a good alternative from the bench.

in a nutshell macca.

Heskey offers pretty much the same as Crouch, just less goals and more mobility, so it's not a shoe in.

If he has a good season with United, one of the biggest teams in the league with loads of influence, then he'll go.

Another thing you're not accounting for is his potential partnership with Rooney, which on paper at least looks very good.

If it proves itself over the season, he'll be there. If fit you'd have to be mental not to take him, he'll always score goals when healthy, regardless of this myth about him having 'no pace left'. By his standards yeah, but compared to most other players he's still relatively 'quick'. Just having him available on the bench is a useful enough asset because he'll score goals.

If everyone stays fit then, Heskey, Rooney, Crouch and Defoe will go to South Africa along with whoever is the form-striker at the end of the season out of, Owen, Bent, Cole or Agbonlahor.

I'm not so sure, Mark. I agree he'll have more of a chance to build up some hype, but Ginsoak hasn't gambled wildly with him, in the sense that he's signed him to play a tactically challenging role, he's signed him to come on and get into the box. Capello, however, has always - according to most rumours - been scathing about Owen's poor movement outside of the box and disinclination or inability to fit more actively into his system, so even if Owen comes on and gets quite a few tap-ins this season I can't see Capello, unlike the media, getting excited about his chances for the summer. He didn't rate him that highly when he was a younger, fitter, sharper player. I doubt he'll change his mind now when he has more reliable, and versatile, options.

Maybe Macca, I think the biggest thing standing in his way is his own fitness, and Defoe. But with 5 spots potentially available, who knows? Capello doesn't seem as influenced by the big sides as past managers have been (just look at Heskey) but I don't think he's stupid either and if a fit Owen has a good season then he'd be a fool not to consider taking him.

System's go out the window anyway when you're talking about having an option there who could come on against a tiring side and nick a goal.

that is my opinion exactly, it's patently obvious that it isn't about the goals with capello rather how individuals fit into his system, something I've said england manager's have failed to grasp for years. basically if certain individuals are fit come the summer they willtravel because they fit into th manager's plans regardless of how many goals they have scored in the league.

heskey will always be pefered to crouch because quick simply he holds the ball up better, high up the pitch rather than feeling the need to drop to the half way line to lay it back off to the defender that have him the ball in the first place.

the only way I can see owen being on the plan is if defoe is injuried and even then capello may bring someone else. has owen played a single minute whilst capello has been in charge? that speaks volumes.

To be fair Neil, he was in a shite Newcastle side struggling with injury and now he's just finding his feet at United. There hasn't been ample opportunity or reason to play him, yet we've a full season ahead of us where he 'could' prove himself.

will be interesting to see how the season pans out, personally I hope he doesn't go. if he is on the plane it means he has had a good season, which in turns means manu have had a good season so I hope he and they fail spectacularly.

He's doing for then exactly what I wanted him to do for us.

Sickening.

It's fine.

"He's shite" according to Oncy and Bunnyman(I think) and they're "onto it".

Missed another chance today and slur alex has stated he feels there is little more he can do to help Michael Owen make England's World Cup squad.. happy days

As long as Defoe keeps on scoring owen has more chance of platting piss than making it..
