I watched the match and when seen in real time and at other angles, it looked like a genuine attempt to win the ball without knowing the defender was around.

I don't think there's any doubt that he was trying to kick the ball, but it's still a red in my opinion. You just can't kick at head height with that velocity unless you're absolutely certain it's safe to do so.
