What I don't get about the United is thread is why they are so convinced that we will have a better season than them, now they have spent a similar amount to us?

For years, they argued, it wasn't about the money. It wasn't about net spend. And how our gross spend was similar, but they just had better players, management and coaching.

Now our gross spend under Klopp IS actually comparable to theirs (never mind our net spend, wages, quality of squads before JK took over, still being inferior), they're all worried.

Which is strange, because according to them, Mourinho is a far better manager than Klopp, but with all things equal, they seem to have no faith in their players or management?

It seems like it's all doom and gloom over there; the one season Mourinho is actually told to close the chequebook and do some coaching. Don't they realise they bet the house on Sanchez already? He was hardly a free transfer. There's a reason why City pulled out of that deal. That, along with Pogba's agent fees means that they're balancing the books right now.

Klopp didn't get Keita when he wanted, he didn't get a CB, VVD, when he wanted.. but he didn't complain about and tear down his squad. Instead, much to many people's dismay and the humour of our rivals, he talked up Lovren and said there weren't many CBs better than him and it would be hard to improve on what he had.

I saw a post on their forums of combined teams. Apparently:

DDG > Alisson
Bailly > Lovren
Valencia > Trent
Young > Robertson
Matic > Fabinho
Pogba > Keita
Fred > Gini
Sanchez > Mane
Lukaku > Bobby.

So basically only VVD and Salah would have a chance of getting into a lot of their sides was the conscensus. And before last season, they would have problem said Mata/Mhki > Salah.. and Smalling > Matip. So basically none of our team. Plus they feel they're squad is better. So why the fear?

I just find it funny how a squad of United's quality (and their squad has A LOT of quality in it and IS arguably better than ours in depth still), is underperforming.

Klopp has got youngsters, who cost us nothing/a pittance, like TAA and Robertson to be performing WAY above their levels. Whereas Jose can't get the best out of Anthony Martial, a wonderkid from the famed Monaco academy, who cost over 30m (with fees rising to potentially 60m+!!!) and was at one point rated with similar potential to Mbappe. Or Rashford, a kid that looked like fire when LVG first gave him his debut.

For me, it's just smacks of greed and fear. Mourinho (and United fans) are basically admitting he can't develop a team to win the league without an open chequebook, so can sign the perfect players, in his perfect system, and he actually doesn't want to do much coaching!!! Only man management. It's pathetic to see them all waving the white flags to City, so early.

Then you haven't been on the forum much. That's exactly what 99% of them think.

Yet somehow, although we have inferior players and an inferior manager, we are a better team. Mind-boggling.

I'd say
Alisson = DDG (based on the world cup, you're only as good as your last game etc)
Trent > Young
Lovren = Bailey
VVD > Lindelof
Robbo > Valencia
Fabinho > Static (their nickname for matic as they think he's shit)
Keita > Pogba (based on Pogba being pretty dire in england)
Shakira > Fred
Mane > Sanchez
Bobby > Rashford
Salah >>>> Lukaku

That's not just me being blinkered, if you go and read their forum threads on these players over last season, the only player in their team that they really rate is DDG. They think their defence are all shit but very well drilled and playing in a defensive system, they think matic does nothing, they argued all season about pogba as he was shite for half of it, they said sanchez was shit since he joined (blamed on the system), and they were all slagging lukaku saying he was a donkey until he found a bit of form.

Id play
De Gea (easy)
Robertson (easy)
Bailly (close with Degs)
Virgil (easy)
Clyne (close with Valencia)

Matic (given I havnt seen much of Fabinho)
Pogba (easily)
Keita (easily)

Sanchez (I think over Mane JUST)
Firmino (easy)
Salah (easy)

5 united
6 Liverpool

And 100% Klopp the manager.

Based on their ACTUAL performances in the PL LAST season, neither Pogba nor Sanchez would get into a combined team. For Sanchez we've seen him perform, but can he do it again ? Pogba has not performed consistently in the PL, or to his highest standards, so there are question marks over whether he can in this league. No-one is doubting his performances in France and for France.

Guardiola responded to Klopp's 'favourites' assertion by saying: 'Thank you, Jurgen. For nine years I’ve lived with that situation, it’s no problem. For nine years, except the first year when I arrived (as a coach) and people in Barcelona didn’t like I was a manager. Since then, we won the Treble every season and were the favourites.
‘So we are the favourites. Thank you, Jurgen, you are so kind.’

He sounds as sad and humourless as his fans.

It's like he's upset that people still hate Mourinho more. "Got to win that one too"

Haha. What does that shithouse Village do to footiemanagers to actually take all fun out of them.?

It won't actually be a meltdown unless Leciester get some point/s out of tonight , if that happens ..

Given that this follows his recent walkout when Klopp rocked up at the same press conference, a pattern seems to be emerging. Puts me in mind of Mourinho's grudging but unmistakable fixation with Rafa when the latter was our manager.

Maureen is Ian then. Pep, Myra. Settled.
One night Myra was walking across t'moors with one of the kids. The kid was crying saying "oh Myra, it's so scary up here on t'moors, I'm terrified". To which Myra replied "You think you're scared? I've to walk back by myself!".

De Gea

Valencia (at the moment, but possibly Trent depending how he does this season)
Van Dijk
Bailly (when fit)
Robertson

Keita
Pogba (VERY reluctant to put this big pudding in, but with Klopp as manager, he could be a beast. Plus, I haven't seen enough of Fabinho. Logba gets in by default)
Matic (I feel like I'm forgetting someone here? Wijnaldum goes missing too much. He's better defensively than Hendo and Milner. Hmm)

Salah
Mane
Firmino

Front like picks itself. There's no comparison.

Matic over Milner... And you want to be taken seriously? 😉

It was all fine till that last "Jurgen, you're so kind" bit. Strange thing to say.

Not really, when you see two boxers before a fight they usually try to tell everybody how good they are and how they are unbeatable. For some reason the premier league is now full of managers trying to convince everybody that somebody elses team is better than theirs and so it should be a surprise if they dont win. Guardiola is just taking the spin off it and saying that being the favourite doesnt bother him. If Klopp thinks we are the favourites then he thinks we are the best team 'thanks for the compliment'

Maybe its a feature of modern management to downplay expectations so that you can increase pressure on your rivals but I cant imagine the likes of Shankly, Paisley, Clough or Ferguson building up their rivals at the expense of their own team.
