Opinions on Shelvey?

Shelvey is decent enough but I from what I've seen Coady is definately going to be better. Reserve team and first team football are different animals and we'll see what happens.

One thing that strikes me about Jonjo is his ability to make time on the ball and pick out a pass. That is a priceless asset.

Xabi wasn't fast either
Very true but I think it's unfair to compare him with Xabi. At 19-20 Xabi was an integral part of Sociedad's team and later on, at 21, helped guide them to a 2nd place finish in la liga.
Xabi was a mercurial talent.

This is what I was alluding to before. Shelvey's lack of pace doesn't become a negative because Xabi didn't have any either!

All good and fine, except Shelvey is nowhere near Xabi's level at the same age.

Mish - I find Xavi to actually be very quick ... He's definitely underrated speed wise.
He's not a snail but was still very slow to turn.

Very quick is a stretch though ltw.

Watch the 2nd leg against Madrid ... A few times he burst into their final 3rd -

He's deceptively quick - maybe that's his game intelligence factoring in, but I never thought of him as slow.

I don't know really.

He still strikes me as very raw, but there's something about this kid that makes me feel he can be a fantastic player.

Dont ask me what though, fucked if I know.

Quite a few people on here have dismissed his prospects of making it here. I find that very perplexing. People forget that he's 18 and that he's just coming back from injury. He needs playing time to show how good he is and given that, I strongly suspect he will. There's something about him, and it's not just his ability to pick out a pass. It's the air he has of a supremely confident player and the desire to constantly want the ball. You don't see that in a 18 year old very often.

Next season will see the coming of him, I reckon. Provided we don't waste money on somebody average like Adam who'd just end up blocking the path for both Shelvey and Coady to the first team.

I like him hes got the physical attributes to be educated playing in the first team rather than waiting until hes 21 and wont be bullied, as others have said he has got an eye for a pass along with the skill to execute it. He seems pretty composed and he never hides which is a rare trait in a 19 year old right footed midfielder being asked to play as a left back

I expect big things from him, no he wont be the next Gerrard but thats ok he has the talent to be his own type of player, although i do see him more in the mold of a stronger version of Scott Parker

Shelvey looks a decent prospect to me, but it's going to take some time to get to grips with the Premier League.

At the moment he's making too many wrong decisions on the pitch.

Hmmm a few hollywood balls there that didnt come off.
He has a good range of passing though, and I still think he will do well

Say wha? Most of his passing was excellent and he always looks assured. I know he's not as elegant as Messi like, but still.

Wasnt that impressed to be honest but my "misplaced passes" comment was a bit exaggerated.

he's 19, and you can see the promise (passing, cockyness, and game intelligence) - too early to say what willl become of him, but so far ok.

Like I said a few hollywood passes gone astray, but the sharp passing across the pitch and opening up the play were to feet and simple.

As mentioned he is only 18/19, he won't be the new Gerrard/Xabi but I don't really care if he isn't. He will become a good premiership player I think he will grow to be in the Xabi passing and spreading play mould rather than action hero Stevie type player.
I would be happy with him in the squad and allow Charlie Adam.

Not sure about that. In deep CM he seems to take too long to decide where to pass. He actually looks better to me when he moves forward and gets into the box.

his decision making will improve the more he plays, and ideally in his favourite position. I'm not sure where his best position is though.

The goal is something Gerrard would be proud of, especially because he hasn't hit it like that and scored in a long time.

Yup. That's his only position.

How the fuck did he end up with Kaka an that?

seriously, it's a case of

One of these things is not like the others, One of these things just doesn't belong...

yet.

During the Fulham game, David Pleat made the comment that he didn't think Shelvey had the required turn of pace to become a top top class footballer.

Twas an interesting observation I thought.

He can be nauseating no doubt, but he's got few peers in terms of in-game analysis.
