Opinions on Shelvey?

What little I have seen of Shelvey, he looks imposing, self assured and calm for a teenager in the midst of hardened grown men. May not have the speed but with good football mind he may yet be a good one like maybe Lucas?

Jonjo Shelvey has likened playing in front of the Anfield crowd to 'taking a load of Pro Plus'.

The 19-year-old spoke in awed terms about how he feels when the Kop sings You'll Never Walk Alone during an interview with FourFourTwo.

"The atmosphere is unreal. I mean European nights are something special," said Shelvey.

"When they're singing You'll Never Walk Alone it makes the hair stand up on the back of your neck - not that I've got much hair. It's just something I can't describe.

"You feel like you've taken a load of Pro Plus, it's a joke. It is something you dream about as a little kid in the playground with your mates. To actually do it is just a dream come true."

Shelvey has made 14 appearances this season after signing from Charlton last summer.

And he has high hopes for next term.

"Parts of my game have improved since I left Charlton, that was obviously going to happen and I've bulked up from being in the gym," he said. "When I come back for pre-season I want to cement a first-team place.

"I want to be seen as an important first-team player. I think I can do that, the club thinks I can do that otherwise they wouldn't have bought me. If given the chances, I will."

During the Fulham game, David Pleat made the comment that he didn't think Shelvey had the required turn of pace to become a top top class footballer.

Twas an interesting observation I thought.

And in that very game he actually used his pace to break free and send a through ball for the Suarez goal.
I think theres more pace there than people realize, at least enough.

Pace helps, of course, but there's a simple two-word answer for anyone who reckons it's indispensable for all top-class footballers:

Sami Hyypia.

It's a little bit mad to think he's featured in 14 matches this season.

He's not that good,yet.. It's just an indication of just how gash our first team/squad is.

And that Kenny fucking LOVES him.

Well yeah and that.

Although given the alternatives to Jonjo, Kenny's love hand is probably forced.

All that said, I like Jonjo and do think he'll go on to be a decent player.

I think he is highly talented, but he has to be central, due to his lack of pace. He needs to be either in centre midfield, which I think is his best position or behind a striker.

He can tackle, works hard, is big for his age, can head, pass, shoot and has bags of confidence it seems.

He's four years younger than Spearing, which just shows how young he is really.

yeah i deffo see him as a central player, i remember watchin some youtube vids of him when he first came to us and the vision and skill he used in some of those passes looked beastie, they are youtube vids though, they can make anyone look good

I am quicker than Didi, I don't swallow this bit that he has no pace, I think he is deceptive, he is tall and has a long gait, I think he covers ground quickly.

I'm starting to think he's going to be a very good player for us. He's already got better ball skills than both Lucas and Spearing.

He has more than enough pace to play in the centre of the park based on last Sunday's evidence too.

Seems to have a fair bit of skill too. I hate this pace issue, it's a load of bollocks, is he a winger? No, so who gives a fuck?

Yeah it's not all that relevant to centre midfield, but at the beginning he did certainly look a bit slow to me.

Not anymore though, he seems to have come back from the injury very well. And he is at an age where he's should get quicker and stronger too.

Yeah, it's more important that he's got the ability to make himself that yard of space and play the pass, which he seemed to do well enough for Suarez' goal last week, even though he still got laughably slated by a few people on here for not releasing it earlier. It looked perfect in timing and execution to me.

I think he's going to be an excellent player for us.

I really think we're about 3 players from a very strong team.

Perhaps, but he's not alone on that score, is he?
We picked him up for low fee and if we can cultivate an international CM out of him then I think that is good going.
Put it this way, I think he could have a similar career to Barry or Carrick if he stays out of the pub and clear of injuries.

You need a bit more than "ball skills" though mate. Smicer had "ball skills" but could never cement himself in the team. Both of those two you mentioned play a role, right now I couldn't even tell you what Shelvey's best position is.

I presume long-term it'll be centre mid, but right now he's not strong, imposing, or good enough to do that role.

I wish the club would arrange a 100m dash for all the players twice a season, and publish the results, so we really knew who was slow and who was not, it would save a whole load of pointless discussion.

I can tell you one thing for nothing fucking Shelvey would burn the arse of Lucas

He's a much better passer than the two as well. Neither Lucas or Spearing are particularly strong or imposing and they lack Shelvey's ability.

I'd have him ahead of the two of them next year.

I think at the min jonjo would be good in the mereiles role. Can pick a pass, time his runs and has a decent shot on him. As he ages and becomes more assured he can gradually play deeper and deeper.

i reckons

Well one thing is for sure he looks a better prospect than Lucas did when he first started out, and look how some people are creaming their jeans over him now

His range of passing is better than both Lucas and Spearing.

Has a bit of a nasty streak in him aswell don't he? That challenge on Sandro was waaaay over the top, reminded me of a young Gerrard tbh.

That's ridiculous.

He's built like a young Gerrard. There's a reason why he's been playing first team football since the age of 17. He looks like a man amongst boys when he plays for the under 19s. He's bigger, stronger and more imposing than any of Lucas, Spearing and Poulsen.

And how on earth can you say he's not good enough to play center-mid from the 15-20 mins appearances he's had all season? Jack Wilshere has beomce a first team CM regular in a couple of seasons. Absolutely no reason why Shelvey can't do the same. Barring a career threatening injury, I can guarantee that he'll be a better player than Lucas or Spearing.
