Ok, this is getting a bit ridiculous now in regards to Aquilani

Never mind lads, Jan Jan The Hammer Man has window in his schedule opening soon, we can see Aquilani then him.
Fixed.

Just like Kuyt's man is gonna do to purple.

The thing is, I never really expected him to feature in the derby, nor do I expect him to feature against Allardyce's thugs. Which is why I was so surprised that he didn't feature against the awful Debrecen.

He should be getting reserve games though, if nothing else.

Jesus Christ.

I know.

What do you know?
People have a right to be pissed off with this and at the very least question why he isn't getting any games.

I know what love is.

If only there were any! Apart from a postponed game v Wigan that I don't think has been rescheduled yet, the ressies aren't down to play again until January! McMahon's looking for some sort of unofficial fixture for December, but, really, the reserve league is absolutely crazy these days.

a player who has a history of injuries shouldn't be rushed back. that's not rocket science, that just common sense.
Rushed back?

He's been free of injury for a good 5 weeks and had a few cameo's late on, now he can't even get that. Well, apart from the odd 60 seconds against an Hungarian traffic wardens 11.

So we've bought an injured player for 20 million who isn't suited to the physical nature of the English league. Lets just wrap him in cotton wool and charge the fans to gawp at him so we can pay back his fee.

Really? That is strange.

The problem is, the way the team are playing, it's going to be very difficult to break Aquilani in gently. Ideally, we'd get a comfortable lead in a game, and allow him a pressure free environment to find his feet. But given that we're playing so horribly at the moment, that's very unlikely to happen.

We either trust that he's capable of performing in less than perfect conditions or we leave it to such a time when confidence is restored. Which could be a while yet.

Pressure free enviroment?

He's not just out of the ressies, he's a full international who has played in plenty of high pressure games.

It's just another example of the manager's scatty over cautious approach. I doubt he even remembers why he bought him. But as we fluked a win yesterday he knows all again.

The reserve leagues, north and south, are crazy now. No managers seem to like the set-up, yet there's no move to take control of it. Redknapp has pulled Spurs out of it altogether, which sounds 'pro-active' but all he's doing is basically farm out most of the squad on loan and arrange the odd kickabout for the rest when he can be arsed. There's also not enough for reserve teams to play for; the top ones can aim to win the league, but the rest can just coast through the season, as relegation echoes the fate of the first XI, not the reserve team itself. The whole thing needs a complete overhaul. If the FA is really so keen to see good young players come through, they should deal with this farce now.

Maybe we should wait until we have a fixture in which there wont be any tackling in midfield
Or pressure to, you know, win.

This over softly approach is just adding to the already immense pressure the lad is under to transform our fortunes. Benitez talks about him not being ready, well the only way he'll be ready is by playing games.

He wasn't shy about throwing a clearly unfit Gerrard into a high pressure local derby, which could have seriously damaged our campaign if he'd had a recurrence of his groin problem.

LolZ!

If you don't have an objective thought in your pretty little head, post a sarcy picture. It's for the best.

But...but...you said you weren't discussing anything! Does this mean you've changed your mind? Or you just can't even follow your own arguments? Superfan.

Rafa would play him if he knew it would help him win. Simple as that. It makes no sense to speculate all over the place. Rafa keeps an eye on the future (and the injurious past) and brings him along slowly. As mentioned earlier, he's the one with all the information to make the decision. We know next to nothing and are questioning it?

He must be physically fit , why else would he be on the bench? If he isn't he shouldn't be there.
He won't be match fit, and won't be unless he gets some games.
At this rate he is going to be so far off match fitness we won't see the best of him until end February /March.

regards

We've just beaten Everton, FFS. I know that may not mean much to those who are banging away on their keyboards from around the globe, but I thought it would let up the moaning at least.

Ah well.
Oh, do fuck off with that. Just because I'm curious about a player, that makes me a moaner and someone who doesn't care or understand about the importance of the win because I'm from "around the globe."

That's bullshit Stu. You have no idea what's going on behind the scenes, and neither do you have any right to know.

Sure, question why, but to be pissed off and to slate Rafa (as you did last week), from a position of ignorance, is bollocks.
Firstly, you are right, I do not know what is going on behind the scenes. I know what Rafa has said publically about the Aquilani situation and that is that he needs games to get sharp and to get match fit. So why isn't he getting the games then? It is a fair question. He has been fit for 4/5 weeks and many are starting to question the player/purchase. And why shouldn't they if Lucas is getting in the team ahead of him?

Secondly, I did not 'slate' Rafa and have never slated Rafa on here. I am a Rafa fan. I went on national radio (in Ireland) on Saturday evening defending the man. Highlighting the positive aspects of his tenure and why he deserves and has earned the right to stick with this team and see the job through. I said that I thought Rafa has handled the Aquilani situation badly and I still stand by that comment.

Yes Stu, but apparently we are stupid and should not be expressing our views here. I share your views, but I am prepared to have my opinion changed by those who ridicule it, if they will give me a logical explanation of why he has played only 23 minutes, when the main reason for him not playing appears to be that he lacks match fitness. Every match that passes without him playing leaves him further away from match fitness. And Im not buying this thing about being unable to bring him on if we are defending a lead. If he is on the bench he should be capable of starting a match.

Incidentally I am a Rafa fan, but this situation I cannot agree with.
Have you seen the games he could have featured in? When should he have been thrown on against Citeh i.e.? Get a fucking grip!
Im not too sure. Maybe when we were trying to win the fucking game. I think you picked a bad example.
Bad example? We had made two subs after 20 mins. We had players with potential injuries out there, and we had a very tough game. We were trying to win the fucking game the whole game, so tell me again when it would be wise to make your 3rd and final substitution in that game?

Game live by their own. It would be stupid to put him on just to put him on.... A game like in the weekend i.e. when we have a 1-0 lead and need to protect this we cant just make a change in central just to do it.

You're calling it "ridiculous" when you have no access to any details other than the fact he's on the bench. which according to SCM means he 'must be perfectly fit', which isn't actually true. We've had half fit players on the bench plenty of times in the past. A fact that get curiously overlooked when this debates rises up again and turns into yet another Benitez slag-fest.

It's all been said before in the umpteen other threads so really I don't see the point.

Gotcha.

Alright I'll wade into the idle speculation baseless nonsense bollocks debates with: is there be any weight behind the idea we can't afford to play him?

We paid a down-payment on Aquilani of £5M, a figure so low it pretty much explains why he was our number 1 target, with the rest is made up of performance related payments. Much like Mascherano at West Ham, perhaps there's a clause we can't afford to trigger at the moment.

I doubt that. Surely a Champions league appearance would figure in such a clause.
