Oh how do you solve a problem like "Meireles"

Thats true, but at the moment there aren't anyone else. So he'll have to do. It was more the thought of getting Gerrard in the team that was excellent..
 
Meireles is best in midfield, not off the striker like Stevie.

Our best formation regardless of whether Suarez comes is 4-3-3... if he does, it'll just make it all the more obvious.
 
Meireles is a pussy, and I would rather he played behind the striker with Stevie in Midfield until we get a half decent DM. Stevie might be a bit too attacking minded to play a central midfield position all the time, but he wont pull out of a challenge if their is any chance of him winning it.

No problem at all really. He has had his best performances at centre of midfield, play him there. He gets up and down the pitch well, and just needs to get stuck in a bit more.

4-2-3-1 will get the best out if Gerrard if he is in the centre of the "3".

Ming will do well as part of the defensive 2, but we need someone better than Lucas there beside him.

Get Kelly in as cb, cause he looks like he has some pace. It's been a while since we've seen that.

The 2 deeper cm's will allow Johnson to get forward if they hold their position (Gerrard won't if he's there which is why hd should play further forward).

If Suarez can play to the right if Gerrard then he replaces Kuyt and he'll get time in the middle as well.

Cole can come in and do a job in any of the attacking "3" positions, but someone for the left is essential.

A quality lb, add players like Lucas, spearing, maxi, Ayala, Wilson & Pacheco into the squad and we have something close to a squad capable of challenging again - if the manager's competent (since we've established that managers do actually make a difference). Not to mention a stack of other youngsters that look like they might be able to get involved.
 
I'm not sure Gerrard & Meireles is a viable CM. Agger & Skrtel are clueless without the protection that our usual flat back 10 has provided over the last few years (albeit exacerbated by Carragher's absence).
We need a new DM. Which seems incredible seeing as Benitez used to sign one every 3 weeks.

the way I see it, if and when we purchase a half decent striker and holding midfielder then miereles will be on the bench, because with two quality strikers up front then gerrard will drop into midfield to partner the quality holding midfielder. so where does that leave miereles (or aqua if he is recalled)?

Nothing really works without a proper defensive midfielder. Until that changes Il believe Gerrard, and Liverpool, are best when Stevie has two midfielders behind him. Without them we can get really exposed, with Lucas trying to hold the fort on his own, and that's just suicide.

Good midfielders are not our problem, the shit ones that outnumber them are.
