Nuri Sahin

Let us not kid ourselves, the main factor is money.

I don't think it's that simple. If we offer him loads less than Real he won't stay here but, if (a) we offer him a little less, (b) he gets the chance of regular first team football here in a decent side and (c) he enjoys his loan year, I think we'd have a good shot at signing him up on a permanent.

Based on his reactions to scoring and his general rapport with team-mates the early signs are good, money of course will be a big factor but enjoying his footie will be up there I think.

I hope so. I'm delighted we managed to get him and it would horrible to see him leave. I haven't seen as much quality in our CM since Xabi left.

They'll ask for 10-15 ... They don't have room for him in their team, esp with Modric signing ... Maybe I'm just trying to be optimistic, but I think he won't be as expensive as 18-20.

I'm sorry, I haven't been following football and especially the silly season as closely this year since we have been so depressingly bad but -

LUKA MODRIC TO REAL MADRID FOR 33 MILLION POUNDS

HAHAHAHAHA!

Spurs really really got their shit together

that's absolutely amazing to me

He's good defensively. You've got to remember, though; Alonso had Mascherano next to him. In Dortmund he had Bender next to him. Defending is a group activity.

Why? He's good. Although I don't think anybody particularly benefits from the deal. Spurs lose one of their best players, but he'll find it hard to get into the Madrid side.

Well hopefully we benefit because Sahin will come to us.

Has anybody else put Sahin in their fantasy footy team? I say get him in if you haven't - His price is going to rocket this week.

From the Mirror:

Brendan Rodgers doesn't know if he'll get the chance to buy Liverpool loan star Nuri Sahin - or if he could afford him even if he did.
The Turkey midfielder has scored three goals in his last two starts, but Rodgers insists it is still too early to make decisions on whether he wants to keep the 24-year-old, or even whether Real Madrid would let him go.

"I don't look beyond the loan period because there are lots of things which will determine whether he ever came here (permanently)," said the Reds boss.

"One has to be availability - Jose (Mourinho, the Real Madrid coach) may decide after one year playing he is really the type of player he wants around his squad.

"Two: He might not be affordable. Affordability is important as well. We'd all love Lionel Messi but whether you can afford him or he's available is another thing.

"All I can concentrate on is Sahin coming in here and helping him become the best player he can possibly be.

"If he finds he enjoys it here and he fits into the way we work, which I am sure he would do because he is a good guy and understands the game tactically and is prepared to fight for the club, then that is something come the end of the season we will talk about.

"But at this stage it is way too early
.
"He is just starting to get up to speed fitness-wise but what he is is a real good guy and you have seen his performances.

"He has a wonderful left foot and the ability to score a goal and he was the captain of Borussia Dortmund at a very young age so he's got those natural leadership qualities."

From the limited amount I've seen of Sahin he is very obviously a highly skilled player with vision and would fit into any team. He has definitely helped the group and weighed in with goals which we were failing at.

The runs he makes are fantastic. He opens up loads of space & loves taking the ball under pressure.

Put simply he makes it look easy.

The best thing is, when you look at the dortmund compilations he's still not at that level, he doesn't have that burst of pace yet or quite the same physical presence.

To think he will get better is mouth watering. He's also playing more of the Gerrard role which I expected him to, but which he hasn't before, & doing it with style.

The effect it had on suarez was clear, that intelligence & ability to turn & remove two or three players from the equation gave him more freedom, along with having two quick players alongside.

Not for this thread perhaps, but I'd be interested to see suarez movement against Norwich, he seemed to play more centrally & more of a traditional strikers role & not have to drift inside or wide.

Fair points.

Yes they are, and I would add something which Rodgers (understandably) leaves out, namely the point about first team football. If in a year's time Sahin is still going to get fewer first team opportunities at Real than he would here, which is entirely possible, that could well be a factor too.

He's treading a fine line between backing the player & feeding his ego & love for the club, & pushing his price up by saying we want him or need him.

If he carries on in this vein all season though, either real will take him back or sell him to chelsea, utd or city, sadly. The only chance we have is him falling in love with the club & us getting cl footy.

Not sure about that. If things go well here, whether or not that involves getting 4th place or better, in a year's time Sahin could be faced with a situation in which he's being asked to give up a secure first team spot in a happy club that's going places, in favour of returning to Real or going to Chelsea or Citeh (at none of which he'd be likely to play as often) or ManUre (when he's just been at Liverpool). I'm not saying it's nailed on that he'd stay, but I am saying we'd be in with a real chance of getting him to sign permanently.

The issues with Madrid persist. Ozil was substituted early in the game on Sunday, and Ramos protested by wearing his shirt:

Ozil has really struggled this year - with Modric there, he may be feeling the pressure. If Ozil goes (we've been supposedly 'monitoring' the situation), our chances of Sahin staying drop to nil imo.

We need top 4 IMO if we are to get him. I can't see him staying with us regardless of how much he enjoys it if we only get 8th. If he continues to improve and we don't make top 4 there will be plenty of clubs who are in the champions league who will be after him if madrid are interested in selling.

I am being hopelessly optimistic here but when he first signed he said it was definitely on loan only, now there might be a chance.

There is no point worrying about it now. You can't always predict what Real will do.

This is a club that sold Sneidjer and Robben off just because they fancied some new faces and wanted to remove the Dutch element.

Modric plays in Sahin's position not Ozil anyway.

I think it's worth remembering how club politics works at that place. Madrid will sign a couple of very big players every season dpending on who's in fashion, the timing of club elections and so on. it's impossible to say who Sahin could end up competing with if he went back next season, it could be two totally new signings. They might fancy taking Suso and leaving us with Sahin, for example.
