MILAN JOVANOVIC has given his word that he intends to join Liverpool – as the Reds unveiled their plans for pre-season.

The Serbian forward, who announced himself on the World Cup yesterday by scoring the winning goal against Germany, has been on Liverpool’s radar since January.

With his contract running out at Standard Liege, the Reds put in the groundwork to ensure they beat off competition from clubs around Europe to land his signature.

When Rafa Benitez left Anfield earlier this month, though, there was a slight doubt about whether the move would go ahead.

Liverpool, however, made it clear they wanted to sign a man who can also play on the left and insisted Benitez’s departure would not deter them from pressing on.

Personal terms have been agreed and Jovanovic has passed a medical and the only thing that needs to be done is the formality of completing a work permit.

Coming from the Belgian league I should bloody hope he wants to play for Liverpool!

I'm not sure what to make of him, but he's looked quite good at this WC.

I'm quite hopeful he'll be alright, like another Maxi really. Decent squad player, nothing to lose. We need a few more of them.

Last striker we signed from Liege helped us to our last league title. Here's hoping this one is as successful.

(I'm probably forgetting some other players who arrived from Liege(?)...)

Good to hear:

Agger makes Reds pledge
Danish defender rules out Anfield exit
Last updated: 21st June 2010

Daniel Agger has pledged his commitment to Liverpool by insisting he has no plans to quit Anfield.

A number of players have been linked with a move away from Liverpool in the wake of Rafa Benitez's departure and the club's financial problems.

However, Agger, who is currently on international duty with Denmark at the World Cup, says he is happy to stay with the Reds despite the prospect of a new manager coming into the club.

"I have no thoughts about leaving Liverpool," said Agger. "I have a four-year contract, I intend to stay and I want to stay, no matter who the manager is.

"Of course, I hope it's a manager who believes in me. I have to show what I can do, I know that. I like Liverpool as a club, I like Liverpool as a city, I have no reason to leave.

"And I think my team-mates feel the same way. Everybody knows that Liverpool is a big club, a great club. From the inside, I can tell you it's a great club."

Fine words.

I'd be delighted to witness a few more of our key members to come out and say something similar these days.

Torres perhaps?

Please.

Yes, they are. When the going gets tough, and all that.

Ya know what, Gerrard and Torres are getting on my fucking nerves at this stage. "I'm Staying" are the only two words (or is that three) they'd have to say and that would end any discussion. Fucking idiots.

Jovanovic may pull plug on Liverpool move

Serbia forward Milan Jovanovic has revealed that he could yet pull the plug on his move to Liverpool this summer.

The 29-year-old was expected to complete his move from Standard Liege to Anfield after the World Cup after agreeing a pre-contract deal with the Reds in February.

However, then Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez has since left to coach Inter Milan after the Merseysiders failed to qualify for the Champions League.

And the change of circumstances could yet see the goal-getter - who has netted 52 goals in 116 league games for Liege - go elsewhere.

Jovanovic scored the winner in Serbia's World Cup victory over Germany last week, and he has hinted that he is not 100 percent certain to be a Liverpool player next season.

"There is an agreement signed with Liverpool. But if either party wants to end it, it's not impossible," he said on Tuttomercatoweb.com.

AC Milan and Juventus are believed to be monitoring the situation should Jovanovic or Liverpool decide that they no longer want to complete the transfer.

Bunch of arses, all the bloke has said is the agreement allows either side to pull out, no more, no less. And all you lovely people have a go at HIS loyalty, class.

I certainly think doc macs is not so sure about rafa4pm.

So do I. He's shown enough in the WC for me to think he's worth a try, and he fills two of our gaps (LW and back-up for Torres) at one go.

Fair enough.

I'm just not convinced at all.

29-years-old and still playing in Belgium?

Dennis Rommedahl has looked rather good at the World Cup too so far but trust me he's not the answer to our prayers either.

Kristian, we have to cut our suit according to our cloth. Until new owners bring new money in, we have to take a chance on players who may not be out of the absolute top drawer (as Rafa had to more than his critics will admit, though he chose the wrong ones too often) and getting them to play above themselves. As for the question of age, Shanks would have told you that a player's usually at his peak between the ages of 28 and 32.

If we're getting in new owners and a new manager with his own ideas I'd be reluctant to force a deal through for a 29-year-old player from the Belgian league that's all.

If we are still in the same financial pickle as we've been in for the past years and the new manager hasn't got anyone lined up himself in the same bracket I reckon we could do worse.

I quite like the look of him. He seems like the type of guy that doesn't like losing and maybe we don't have enough characters like that in squad.

Stop with this belgian league nonsense. Fellaini came from the belgian league and now hes been playing in his favoured defensive midfield role he looks very accomplished in the premiership.

You reckon Felliani would've made the same impact had he played another 9 years in Belgium before beeing snapped up?

It's a completely void comparison as one was young and on the up whereas the other is probably entering the fall of his career.

Name me one player who's made a great impact on the Premiership as a forward/winger/striker after arriving directly from one of the lesser leagues late in his career? (I'm not saying there isn't any I'd just like you to mention me a few).

He's played three years in Russia from 2003-06 reaching a total number of nine games mind.

I'm not at all convinced by one decent game during the WorldCup. You guys shouldn't be either as looks can be deceiving in that particular tournament history has told us...

*cough* Diouf *cough* Diao.... *cough* ..

I need a cup of tea.

And a bacon sandwich. 😉

I'm not at all convinced by your suggestion that moving countries is easier for younger players - on the contrary, a few extra years of experience might have helped Fellatio settle in more quickly, especially on the disciplinary side. But in any case nobody's making any exaggerated claims for Jovanovic here. All we're saying is that he deserves a go. I'm sure we'll have had him watched for some time before moving in for him.
