I was told yesterday that Alan Beith was a very, very strong contender to become the new Speaker of the House of Commons. He pitched for it last time and didn't win much support so I discounted this as gossip being spread by someone with a vested interested. And his odds yesterday were 66/1. Tonight he is 6/1 second favourite.
