At first I was surprised by this news, but on second thought, I believe the link is real and feasible. First of all, La Gazzetta is the most credible sports newspaper in Italy, they are not like Tuttosport, who routinely manufacture bullshit transfer rumours to keep readers interested. But most importantly, I can see how this lad ticks all the right boxes for Rafa:
*physically strong
*hard-working
*energetic
*skillful
*potentially can be developed into a versatile player who can cover different positions
*Spanish-speaking
*relatively young, so Rafa can get credit for molding him into a big player
*lesser known, younger and cheaper than his alternative in Tevez, while not any less talented
In general, the types of players we are being linked with so far (Lavezzi, Silva, Tevez, Lennon, Kuba, Suarez) lead me to believe that Rafa is seriously in the market for a creative and versatile player who can play second striker, on the wing or somewhere in between. Most likely, Babel is gone - Rafa doesn't tolerate lackadaisical attitude. I'm sure Rafa, just like any other manager, would put Ribery at the top or very near the top of his most wanted list for attacking midfielders, but considering the price, interest of wealthiest clubs and the fact that we wouldn't be the player's first choice (probably not even in top 3 or top 5, considering our lack of French diaspora in the team), it would be a long shot. My hunch is that Ribery will end up in Madrid, while Rafa is going to choose between Lavezzi and Suarez as his biggest purchase of the summer, while keeping an eye on the Tevez and Silva situations just in case. I can see Rafa buying someone cheaper, like Kuba, if his top targets fall though and he decides to invest more in an out-and-out striker.
I want to say one more thing about age. I noticed a trend that when it comes to buying players for building spine of the team, Rafa prefers and typically has the most success with players around 22-24 years old. Wenger's comfort zone is under 20, Ancelotti's is over 30. Rafa's is 22-24. Xabi Alonso, Torres, Masher, Agger, Skrtel, Reina, Arbeloa and Crouch were all in this age group, Kuyt and Garcia just a year or two older. That's another reason why, I think, Lavezzi or Suarez sound more like a typical Rafa purchase to me, rather than Tevez, Ribery or whoever.
