Liverpool transfers: the two targets that got away... for now?

Liverpool will maintain their interest in two Bundesliga stars

Liverpool are planning to follow up their interest in targets Mahmoud Dahoud and Christian Pulisic in future transfer windows.
Jurgen Klopp was hoping to bring both players to Anfield this summer but completing those deals proved problematic with their clubs currently unwilling to sell.
The Reds had to admit defeat in their chase of Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder Dahoud and Borussia Dortmund winger Pulisic. However, Liverpool will continue to monitor their progress closely and retain hope that they will become Liverpool players in future.
Gladbach refused to part company with £25million rated Germany Under-21s international Dahoud having already sold fellow midfielder Granit Xhaka to Arsenal.
But with the 20-year-old having so far turned down a new contract he is expected to leave the Bundsliga outfit in 2017 when he will be down to the final year of his current deal.

Liverpool’s hopes of securing his services next summer could hinge on whether they can offer Champions League football with a number of top European clubs having also registered their interest in him.
The Reds boss is also a big admirer of teenager Pulisic, who joined Dortmund’s Academy in January 2015 when Klopp was still manager there.
Dortmund rejected Liverpool’s £11million bid during the summer window and told them they weren’t prepared to sanction a sale for the USA international.

The Pennsylvania-born 17-year-old, who has two years remaining on his contract, wasn’t pushing for a move but his first-team opportunities are likely to be limited this season.
Like Dahoud, he’s unlikely to be available in January but Liverpool are expected to test Dortmund’s resolve next summer.

I saw a report on hitc.com (yeah, I know) citing a report in the-paper-that-shall-not-be-named (yeah, I know!), that claimed that Klopp was mighty pissed off at having missed out on Oliver Burke.

Now I'm sure that this is probably all made up bollocks. But it did get me wondering how good Oliver Burke was, given that he is only 19 and RB Leipzig have just parted with £13m for him (seemingly with no interest from the Premier League).

Has anyone here had their eye on him? @Pesam maybe? Would he have been a quality addition? Burke or Pulisic?

EDIT: Just noticed that The Express are now also carrying this story.

When I saw the heading above the photo of Klopp I hoped one of the players involved would be Hector. That's not to say I'd be unhappy with signing either of these, but we shouldn't lose sight of the need to address the LB position.

Tomorrow's article will be we are continuing to monitor the development of Ben Chilwell, don't worry JJ

Who the fuck's Oliver Burke?

He's a former Notts Forest winger that RB Leipzig have signed for £13m. I'd neither seen nor heard of him until I read this article this morning.

I was hoping some others might. £13m is a lot of money for a Brit teen moving abroad, I was curious as to how good he actually is.

What I have been able to find out is that he's either the Scottish Bale, or the Scottish Robbie Keane ha!

What a load of shite that article is (no offence meant to you count). It's just LFC spin, any number of things can happen between now and next summer so why bother to suggest specifically that we will continue to monitor two players we were supposedly already interested in. In other news were also interested in a magical left back with boots made out rocking horse shit.

Sorry WE I've just seen this. I have only seen fleeting glimpses of Burke and that was last season. He was quick, direct but very lightweight and easily bullied. That said, he was only 19 and I've seen a few clips from Forest's first few games and he has bulked-up considerably. £13m is a lot of money for a kid that's only played 25 games but the potential is definitely there. He reminds me a bit of Gareth Bale in that he's tall, likes to play wide and cut in, he's quick and seems to be developing an eye for goal.

In short, for that type of money I think it was too big a risk for us (and Leipzig) but I'm surprised City, Chelsea, United etc didn't make a move.

Brill, thanks for the summary @Pesam - it was the fee that RB Leipzig paid to take him to Germany that piqued my interest as you don't often see the European clubs paying that kind of fee for British teens (especially ones playing in the championship).

Some quotes from Tony B on why Liverpool missed out on Gotze and Chilwell (nothing earth shattering).

[article]
‘Players not only had to want to sign for Liverpool, they had to buy fully into his vision,’ Barrett wrote for JOE. ‘If they didn’t, if they prevaricated in any way, tried to hedge their bets or seek unreasonable rewards, deals would not take place.
‘Such fundamentalism put paid to a proposed move for Mario Gotze when the German international asked to wait until after Euro 2016 before deciding on whether to commit to Liverpool. Seeing that move for what it was, Klopp duly pulled the plug. He was not about to build his transfer strategy around a player who could easily be tempted elsewhere in the event of him having a good tournament.’

Klopp also retained an interest in Chilwell, but was reluctant to spend the required £10m on a 19-year-old with no Premier League experience – even if he could have solved the club’s left-back issue. Barrett added:

‘Had Klopp been otherwise inclined, Liverpool would already have a new left back in their ranks but the £10 million fee that Leicester City were seeking for Ben Chilwell, a 19-year-old who is still to make his Premier League debut, went beyond what Klopp thought reasonable and the deal was not done.
‘Given Liverpool had sold Jordon Ibe and Brad Smith for a combined total of almost double that amount, Leicester’s asking price for Chilwell might not seem excessive, but Klopp’s logic is that the minute you start paying over the odds you make yourself a hostage to fortune and that is something he remains reluctant to do.’

A Bayern supporter was just saying the other day how the BL may not have the money of the PL but there is substantially increased prize-money, maybe 50% up on last season. So in the future we can expect to see German clubs paying much larger fees than we are used to seeing from from. If I can find that piece again I'll post it.

EDIT. Here it is:

Bundesliga's new TV deal has been announced. The rights from 17/18 to 20/21 have been sold for €4.64bn (an 85% increase), together with the profits from international broadcasting rights DFL is expecting at least €1.4bn annually.

The 18 Bundesliga clubs shared €707.9 million last season with Bayern receiving a little more than 10% (€71.8million). Assuming it's distributed the same way a €1.4bn deal would probably mean the Bundesliga clubs get €1.1bn per season, Bayern's share would be around €110million.
Other major European leagues look like this :

La Liga - €1.3bn

Serie A - €940m

Ligue 1 - €467m

Premier League £1.6 billion

The 20 clubs in Ligue 1 will share around €600 million next season and the figure for the Premier League will over €3billion.
