Serves him right.

Jurgen Klopp will not be rotating goalkeepers between Premier League and Champions League group stages this season.

After spending £65 million to secure Alisson Becker, it is no surprise the Brazilian No 1 will keep his place when European competition kicks off.

Nevertheless, it is a shift in policy from a year ago when Klopp opted to use Simon Mignolet on league duty and Loris Karius played in Europe.

Mignolet later suggested changing the keepers was not a good idea, at which point Klopp decided Karius should start in the Premier League too.

There will be no ambiguity when Liverpool start this campaign, and after being publicly rebuked for expressing his dissatisfaction at not being allowed to leave Anfield during the summer, the best Mignolet can hope for this season would appear to be Carabao Cup or FA Cup action.

Even that may not be a formality with Liverpool drawing Chelsea in the third round in the first domestic cup competition, and silverware overdue after a long wait at Anfield.

We can make two full teams with our squad. It's important to keep players match fit if at all possible and the LC and FAC could be important in that regard this season.
This.

I want us to play our reserve/B side in both cups for as long as we can stay in it, so that those players are as match fit as we can hope for when they're needed for the league or CL campaign.

I want us to win it...win anything tbh im not fussed. I don't want us to be like Spurs who are just happy with top 4 and winning fuck all. Plus we have a second string of mignolet, moren.....nah fuck him anyone else, matip, lovren, fabhinho, hendo, clyne, lallana, fat shaq, studge and origi who can all play in the cup. No reason to not go for it.

We’re not like Spurs, this we should go all out in prioritizing on winning the league. Yes would love a cup, but it’s as good a chance as we’ve had of winning the league in years right now.

It's down to who the opposition is in the draw. If it's Chelsea, you need to play more or less your strongest side, otherwise you're out, and you have no matches to give time to your other squad members. Get through the tie and if the next draw is a lesser side, play some kids. You have to be pragmatic. Once you've won something, you can afford to throw a cup competition away. We're currently the team that loses finals, managed by the man who loses finals. We need to get that off our back.

How are we not like Spurs? What have we done that makes us better? When was the last time we finished above them in the league? We haven't won ANY trophy in years. We can't even call ourselves Arsenal who just lived for top 4 as they've won more trophys recently than us.

We're not like Spurs because we're Liverpool. European royalty with an incredible history. We came second in Europe last season and have recruited very well. Have won the first 4 league games. So we can say that realistically we're good enough to challenge for the league title this year. Not top 4 as you keep saying for some reason. Therefore it can make sense if that's what we prioritize on rather than a Cup we won't be talking about in a couple of seasons. Yes great memories those league cups, but when you talk of our greatest wins, do you talk about a league cup final, or that title clinching game/season and/or European Cup triumph?

I'm quite up rotating in the league cup but going strong in the FA Cup. Bring it home.

European royalty and History means fuck all. Only thing that matters is whats in your trophy cabinet. There's no reason why we can't go for the cup AND the league as our squad is more than big enough. We came 2nd in europe....so what it still means we lost and won nothing last season. Fact is spurs have done better than us for the last few years and the only rep we currently have is having a team and manager that bottle it in finals.....the same as Spurs so we have done nothing YET to say we are better than them.

"If you are first you are first. If you are second, you are nothing."

I can't believe you're comparing us to Spurs. And I can't believe you think we're strong enough to go all out for the cup(s) and the league. When we haven't won it in 30 years. Spurs can go after the shite cups (fair enough if you measure success by league cups). We go for the top prize, and we need to go all out for the top prize.

You can't win it if you aren't in it. True for finals and Spurs are never in them. A UEFA Cup Final and a CL Final in the last three years makes us better than Spurs. When were Spurs last in a European Final ? They bottle it in Europe long before they get to a final. I don't think there was any botling it by us against Madrid either. To say that is harsh beyond fairness. We didn't get any luck but we were not lacking in bottle. These performances count for more than Spurs flat track bully wins in the league.

Spurs don't, though.

Pochettino has been quite vocal about his disdain for the domestic cups, claiming they wouldn't really change much, or change anything significantly for the club.

Actually I think people will remember our CL & EL finals for a lot longer than they will Spurs' Top 4 placings 😉

Which is the right attitude to have. I agree with him but many fans think you MUST win something and at RedCafe it's almost a mantra now (whenever Klopp or LFC are mentioned).

Yeah, I know.... but when you haven't won anything for a long while, it just seems important to get that feeling/ habit back, even if it is "just a domestic cup".

We shouldn’t be comparing as they have been better than us for a few years now.

We need a trophy badly this season to fix that

But that comes back to the "value" of the trophy beyond the fact you've won one. Which is the debate really.

Would anyone take 5th place and the League Cup or FA cup, ahead of finishing in the Top 4 and CL qualification?
And if Spurs finished ahead of us, but we won the League Cup, what would that prove? Who had the better season?

It's not that cut and dried.

He's right, isn't he?

Wenger winning those cups recently didn't stop player or fan discontent and keep him in the job.

Same thing seems to be happening to Maureen despite winning one Milk Cup and the UEFA Cup for the Mancs.

Yeah, which is why we need to have a sustained title challenge, finish Top 3 ideally (it's just nicer than fourth!) and win a cup or two.

Of course, what we all want is to win the title, and fuck all this domestic cup chat. That's the trophy that counts.

After 6 years without a trophy it is now.

It’ll be 7 after this season if we don’t win anything.

I don’t even know how far back we have to go for that big of a drought. 50’s??

OK, Dreamy:

1) 5th place, no CL football and the League Cup
2) 4th place, CL football, no trophy.

Choose one.

1 This season please although it’s a silly choice as we are finishing top 4 with or without a domestic cup.

The choice would be more realistic if you said

1) 4th no challenge early exit CL (16) and league cup
2) 2nd challenge til the last day, CL SM and no trophy
