Michael Owen's Comments

The reason I never took to Owen is that I always felt he had a career plan, and that Liverpool were just a stage in that. He wanted the full trophy haul and that was what his career was about. It wasnt just about playing for Liverpool and England. However, the club completely bottled his transfer and should have cup-tied him.

Mascherano fucked us over by refusing to play against one of our main rivals in a CL-spot 6 pointer. No player should ever refuse to play for the club.

The bottom line is they both put themselves before the club and fans dont want to see that.

I think it's a lot easier to accept a player leaving when you're winning and you've seen consistent success from the managers when they've had to replace top players.

You can put yourself first whilst remaining professional. Mascher didn't do that, whereas MO did that from day one when he was 17. If he had played honest at the end, I would still hold him in as high esteem as God or Rushie.

I don't want to get back into the debate about whether or not Masher actually did refuse to play, but there's more than a hint of double standards about some of these posts, which seem to suggest that Owen's own dubious conduct should be treated more leniently because he spent longer with LFC. Not in my book it shouldn't.

Whadda - there was no denunciation of either Souey or Rushy that I remember. Souey had literally shed blood (his own as well as other people's 😉) for the shirt and was totally up front about his wish to move on. As for Rushy, everybody and his brother knew that he didn't want to go anyway - witness his return at the first opportunity.

Maybe he did want to play JJ, I would certainly not give my manager any reason, however small, to drop me from the squad. FWIW I think they are both pricks who are better off away from this club, and I wish them every unhappiness in all they do.

I honestly don't think that's fair, mate. They both did well for us, and for me the fact that they may have blotted their copybooks at the end doesn't wipe out the benefit we gained from having them in our squad.

In any case they've both gone now, so the only people who'll be affected by any lingering resentment will be us. Far better to look forward, move forward and make them both regret their respective decisions.

Not spent longer,Jules...but he has done far far more.

The truth is, we'll never know whether or not Masher refused to play even if some people are convinced either way.

But Owen carried the club when we were shit on the pitch, even if we werent that shit off it.

So even if there are similarities between the two ie they both shafted us, I cant think of them in the same way.

I couldn't have said it any better....agree word for word.

I can though.

It is better to move on, as Jules has suggested.

BUt we arent going to make Masher regret his decision.

That's why his betrayal will be seared a lot longer.

I also think that, when it comes to Mascher, too many people are simply refusing to acknowledge the position that his wife put him in.

Whether or not she should have, she did, and ESPECIALLY if there are children, most men will put family over career preferences, within reason - If your wife told you that she truly HATED where you lived and just HAD to leave, and would take the kids with her, wouldn't you, after initially trying to talk her out of it, eventually give in, for the sake of your marraige and to be around your children?

I would. In his position, I think most of us would have to conceed that we'd do the same thing.

I'd have done the same thing too; because I did..and I've admitted as much.

Would have done it a bit differently tho.

But he has since said that his family was not the reason he wanted to move, and has accused LFC of telling lies by claiming it was.

Perhaps cos he wanted to take some of the pressure off his missus. No point moving out there only to have her whinging at him!

True, but it applies to this summer's shenanigans. His family's inability to settle here was the reason he first asked for a move last year.
