Michael Owen retires

I don't hate Michael Owen, and I think it's a bit of a shame the way things worked out.

He was a really good player for us and I wish he had stayed longer.

He is, however, an extremely dull man who, I fear, will be on our TV screens a lot more from now on.

In 1997, still only seventeen, he convinced Liverpool he was ready to make his first team debut. When asked about his possible inclusion, Liverpool manager Roy Evans said bluntly: "if you are good enough you are old enough"

I saw his debut at Wimbledon in 97. I just knew he would score. And he did.

Loved his hat trick before HT v Newcastle and Ruud Gullit's sexy football

2 goals to turn round the 2001 Cup Final

Jumping in 2 footed on Ronnie Johnsen at OT

That goal v Argentina

That hat trick v Germany

And many, many more.

I will remember him for this and not the last few years because no matter what he did since he left us, he did brilliantly for us and England for many years at such a young age. He carried our goal scoring for a while as a teenager. Not many teams have a player of that brilliance and maturity that young.

Understand the negative stuff towards him but from my point of view I'll never forget his start for LFC. What a player he was. Probably one of the best debut/starts as an LFC player I've ever seen. He rocketed (literally) out the blocks and was genuinely world class by the time he was 19/20. Injuries took it's toll but sadly he let himself down with his contract bollox that saw him go Real Madrid - Compounded by going to Utd. To this day I feel that the only reason Fergie took him there was to rub our faces in it.

Up there with our best strikers but made a bad move when joining Madrid. If he was going to join Utd he should have done it then.

Did he end up winning everything at club level? Not sure if he won the CL with Utd

Sweet Christ are you serious?

Well he left to win more trophies correct? And he has shown since he doesn't really give a shit about Liverpool or its fans.

Taking loyality away (which he didn't have) he wold have won what 5 titles a league cup and a CL there no?

There's so much wrong with those two posts that I would rather grind broken glass into my sack than reply rhetorically.

I'm presuming you're on a wind up. No way are you being serious.

I absolutly loved him from the moment he introduced himself at Selhurst Park.
One of the best finishers around combined with lightning pace.
He gave us some fantastic memories and scored some vital and important goals. Carrying us in many games and winning the FA cup final on his own.

The thing is though, something changed with his attitude and commitment. Early in his career he celebrated goals like a maniac, but in his final seasons he hardly celebrated and he had that its just a job look.

I'll never forgive him for running his contract down and leaving like he did. I didnt care about him signing for the Toon, but signing for the Scum was just to much.
The way he talked about Utd and conducted himself was twatish in the highest order.

A player who didnt get the club, didnt have strong bond with the fans and looked like it didnt matter to him either. It certainly feels like what could have been, with a player that could have been a club legend if he'd have had another connection with the club.

In the end, he's instead just a boring dull twat that has been benched and injured for the last 3 years.

I suspect Owen would not have gone straight to United from Liverpool, although I do see where you are coming from.

Signing for United when he did obviously was never going to go down well with Liverpool fans, but in fairness to him, he had already burnt those bridges and he was offered the chance late in his career to win some trophies.

It was different to going there straight from Liverpool, but fuck me with some of the comments he's made over the years both at Newcastle and Utd then he really doesn't seem to get LFC at all and if his motivation was to win titles and CL's he should have gone there.

According to him on twitter tonight he's been "biting his lip for years" but doesnt have long to go now before the truth comes out.

He was terrific for us, but running down his contract was a cunt's trick as far as I was concerned, and I wished him no fortune from that point on. I wasn't even that bothered when he joined Man Utd because it seemed very much in keeping.

Looking back on that video of his best goals for us, I can't help thinking that he threw away his own career. I know he had severe injuries, and that was probably out of his own control, but he could have been loved by fans. Now he's got journalists saying 'we should look back fondly at his career' whereas everyone else is kind of shrugging their shoulders, because it's so long ago since Owen was actually any good.

I'd look back fondly at him if he actually gave a fuck about the club but he doesn't and never did. To be honest that feeling was reciprocated to him by LFC fans even when he played for us. He always wanted to be elsewhere. He was and still remains a complete mercenary. Sure he scored some crackers for us and he viewed us as nothing more as a stepping stone to greater things. When those things came calling in the shape of Real Madrid he didn't think twice on the impact to us and really didn't consider his face was never really going to fit at Real Madrid - the fans there were completely apathetic towards him even though his goals to minutes ratio was excellent. And when it all went sour at Real he tried to angle his way back here via his mates and the club rightly told him to fuck off. When we needed him he wasn't interested and now he needed something we were supposed to drop everything and welcome him back with open arms ? Nah.

So it was then he carried on down the mercenary route. Taking whoever would pay him the most shillings. Newcastle did and, like the mercenary cunt he is, he soon fucked them off at the end of his contract to go and join a bigger club despite being injured for the majority of that contract. Joining Dementos band of merry gobshites simply reinforced his lack of affection to us as a club. Shame it was all a bit embarrassing for him as he became nothing more than a bit part player and the fact he's no more than that at a team like Stoke shows he's all washed up now. Boo hoo.

Owen never had any affection or loyalty to us or any club. He was always just doing a job. Michael Owen's loyalty was to Michael Owen and nobody else. As a result, I've no affection towards him and never really did have. Nor will I ever look back fondly and thank him for all the goals as, let's face it, he's was doing the job he was being paid to do. Yes he did it well but he was also paid very well. Now jhe's retiring he can focus more on his first love - Michael Owen

Shearer & Owen talking concurrently would see the entire audience slip into a coma, missing hansens thinly veiled, slurred digs at both of them.

Always enjoyed seeing Owen in a Liverpool shirt, he was a great player for us. Injuries, bad advice and a few cringe worthy moments plagued the latter half of his career but he was awesome for us 98-04 and wasn’t too shabby at Madrid.
I remember reading a lot about him whilst he was a youth player and he certainly stepped up. His emergence coincided with factors like lightning pace and counter-attacking football coming to the fore in English football so he was well suited.
People tend to focus on the negatives where his career is concerned but 200+ top flight goals plus 40 for your Country ain’t bad. Plus the medals and a load of individual honours like the Ballon D’Or, Player of the Year etc.
Despite the PowerPoint demos, other gaffes and ultimately signing for Utd, he still doesn’t quite strike me as the same level of gobshite that 98% of his fellow professionals are. That alone is enough to be admired.
