Anyone think Micah Richards might (with some serious coaching) make a good DM? He's still very young, and doesn't look entirely comfortable at CB.

Weirdly, I was saying the same thing to Asim yesterday. Especially if Mascherano gors, could be a good option.

I really hope we sign him.

Very interesting thoughts there. Could well be suited as a defensive spoiler a la Mascherano. I just can't see Man city letting him go espeically that cheaply. Also, from what Ive seen of him he lacks the game intelligence Rafa likes his players to have. Masch reads the play well.

I agree about it being hard to believe that City would let him go so cheaply. But I think he can be developed into that sort of role. He would need a lot of direction, yes. But that's where he'd benefit from playing alongside Alonso and just infront of Carragher.

What 'off-field' issues has he had?

Did he nick a toilet seat too?

Doubts about his lifestyle

I am not sure where he stands on toilet seat theft but I understand he is dead against it.

There are so many potential plays on words there.

But anyhow, oh he's 20, so he goes out a bit? Hardly a deal breaker.

I don't know anymore than you do but you have to ask why City are ready to let him go so cheaply if there is not some issue there.

Richards has the makings of a great player. Granted, there's some some beaut in between, but he won't be like that forever.

"Goes out a bit"? A number of our players, past and present, have been in the papers for less. Sorry but I don't want the club dragged down that road again. I'd need a clear assurance that Richards understood that and would stick by it before I shelled out the club's hard-earned for him.

Do you remember when Carragher got sent home by England U21 for going out drinking? Or when he got so drunk at the Christmas Party and decided to strip off?

Yeah, me too.

I couldn't think of too many players who'd be worse at defensive midfield than Richards to be honest.

He's best attributes are strength, pace, and power.

The attributes required to play DM?
Positional sense - Richards has none, he uses pace to bail him out of everything.
Tackling - Again, not great.
Distribution - He's awful with the ball at his feet, and it's widely reported that's the main thing that dropped him from the England side.
Tracking runners - There's no evidence he can do this.

He'd be fucking rubbish there really.

I disagree that he couldn't be developed into a DM. Most CB's can be.

I agree that he currently lacks game intelligence, but like I've said earlier in the thread that's where he would benefit from playing alongside Alonso and in front of Carragher. He has pace and is athletic enough to cover the necessary ground and have a real presence in the midfield area too. As for distribution, Mascherano's hardly got the greatest range in the world, the DM just needs to break up play and put your passers on the ball.

How much of his poor form was down to Hughes though? Dunne had an atrocious season as well, after an amazing one the year before.

Coincidence?
