Thought this was worthy of its own thread.

86 goal in a calendar year and a new world record.

Amazing. Madness. Insane.

Imagine how many he'll score when he peaks in his late twenties like all players do

Was the Argentina team that Maradona won the World Cup with really that shit?
I know that and the Napoli team's used in favour of Maradona's case, but I remember mildly that they were a good side.

Having said all that, I do wonder how Messi would have done in that era. The likes of Pele, Maradona and Best were pretty much assaulted in every single match, the kind of tackles and kicks that would get any player a straight red in the modern era. To glide past players Messi-style back then would have guaranteed a kick to the knee or shin by any one of the opposition.
Likewise, would those players have had much better records in this non-contact era?

Maradona was absolutely pummelled by players back in the day.
Also the Argie team that Maradona played in wasn't that great. Burruchaga, Valdano and who else?

The big difference between Maradona and Messi for me is that Maradona made his team-mates look a lot better. I doubt that you could put Messi in Aston Villa (my comparison to Napoli at the time) and turn them into league winners.

Just look at Napoli's downfall after Maradona left.
Barca were winners before Messi joined.

I don't think it's possible to outscore Messi and Ronaldo. They're averaging more than one goal a game if I'm not mistaken. Unless you're scoring hat-tricks every time you take the field, you're really not going to go a level above that.

As for the kickings, there is no doubt that players these days get protected far more than they used to, but it's worth pointing out that Messi does get kicked a fair bit too and generally he tries to get on with it. He's no Nani.

It's probably also worth pointing out that defenders don't always get the chance to foul him. Such is the speed and movement in that Barca side at times that defences are left for dead anyway and so much of the play is concentrated in and around the box that a kick to the shins would result in a pen or a dangerous free kick and that was the same back in the day as well I'm presuming.

Probably the best striker in the world, ever. However it's always difficult to compare over generations and even more so over postions.

Still, a fantastic, if not incredible, achievement, and even better that it will make Ronaldo cry into his milk.

Maradonna's achievements with Napoli are somewhat overshadowed by the alleged help of the local Gomorrah.

Lots of respected journalists have established a link Holle.
Unless you know diferently.

I know that Gomorrah doesn't have anything to do with it.

Their influence has been very low for the last couple of milleniums.

These stories are all Gonorrhea. Nonsense of biblical dimensions.

Weren't Milan suspended for some shady business in the 80s?
Still no one can take away world cup 86.

There has been many instances of shadey dealings in Italian football down the years, calciopoli being the most renowned.
Maradonna was still a wonderful footballer though.
