According to 'Kicker', a usually reliable German football magazine.

Apparently he wants to leave if Werder don't qualify for Europe. Which is likely at the moment.

Maybe we should get him in case we'd have to replace Agger?

Werder Bremen aren't exactly renowned for their defending.

Your point being?

Mertesacker is an excellent defender who could do a very good job for us.

Well, my point was he's looked good in the WC but he routinely looks a mug for his club. That's all.

Mate, I don't watch much English football, nevermind German football, but I know he's part of a dodgy defense.

How many teams in the Bundesliga have let in more goals than Werder Bremen this season? Just out of curiosity...

What's that?

Only one club in the Bundesliga has let in more goals so far this season?

What?

Almost three a game?

Anyway, maybe he's great and I'm misjudging him based on statistics, I can accept that possibility.

I'd like it if you addressed the issue of Bremen's defensive frailty though.

Look mate. Your argument is based on some stats of this season in which Werder isn't exactly shining. Granted. That's the reason he wants to leave after all.

But Mertesacker is an excellent defender which is why he won over 70 caps for Germany.

To judge one single player by the stats of a whole team is laughable.

I'd like it if you addressed the issue of judging a player's ability without watching him play football.

Gene if you haven't watched the player then its a bit unfair to judge him based on his teams defensive record this season. We've conceeded more goals than Sunderland so far this season and that doesn't make Titus Bramble a better defender than Jamie Carragher.

Mertesacker has looked decent when I've seen him play and is great in the air. I'm not saying we should run out and sign him but at the same time I wouldn't cross him off our lists due to Werder having a poor year.

Well, this year is worse than normal (I think) but they haven't had a great defensive record since his arrival, from what I know, but I couldn't be bothered looking up stats.

I also don't think that the German league is a great place for centre halves, Bayern typically buy anyone who's world class, especially if he's German but they've shied away from this guy because (I've heard) he's regarded as a bit dodgy. Instead they prefer to trust Di Mechelis (SP?) and van Buyten.

And if we're only to comment on players who we've seen regularly in their own leagues then you'll find threads like this will be very, very quiet.

Having watched no German football whatsoever but relying on my brother's opinion I'm backing Gene on this one.

Apparently, "he's a big dumpling".

Per Mertesacker is a good defender - and now it seems is the time for him to step up and move to a bigger club.

It would be a mistake for anyone to question his defensive abilities based on the results of Bremen.

Bremen is a side who have played an attractive style of football consistently under Thomas Schaff.

However, Schaff brings very little tactical organisation to Bremen and so:

1. Bremen have failed to produce results in Europe - where being organised defensively is key.

2. Little tactical organisation exposes the defense, which in turn has made defenders like Mertesacker look dodgy at times.

Mertesacker has been Bremen's most consistent performer over the years - and to earn something like 70 caps for Germany by the age of 26 speaks volumes about him.

I'm not saying he is in the mould of the Nesta's, Puyol's etc ... but if he is available on the cheap - then its definitely worth the shot.

I've only ever really watched him with the National Team to be honest. Big and commanding in the air and great in fifa as I said earlier. 😉

Mertesacker is good, just because the werder bremen team is struggling it doesnt mean he is shit. If you have watched him play you will see he is a good, solid CB

I rest my case.
[/quote]

Ha ha.

I haven't seen a lot of him either but any team can struggle and it can't all be put down to particular players who have proven ability. 70 caps for Germany says it all really ..... and at 26 he's just coming into his prime.

hahahahahaha

I think DWM still has a point about commenting on players that you haven't seen play, but with zlatan's comment, going to have side with gene on this one.

Since he signed for bremen in 2006, they finished:

3rd
2nd
10th
3rd

but yet you judge him after a few games into the season in a league you dont even watch. Your an idiot mate 🙂

Again, it's "you're" a zlatan

He certainly is.

They haven't had a great defensive record because they've had a very attacking game philosophy and some average players at the back(especially in the full back department). Score one more than your opponent and all that. They've had some fantastic attacking players to make it possible(Micoud, Diego, Özil) but haven't been able to replace Özil now. This season they've also had a host of injuries to an already thin defense which has forced them to play midfielders at full back. Plus Mikel Silvestre has been an absolute disaster.

So Schaaf stubbornly sticking to his attacking philosophy without players to make it work and an injury plagued already weakish full backs are why Bremen are struggling not Per Mertesacker. In fact they'd probably be in the relegation zone without him.

Lads, Zlatan hasn't put a foot wrong in this thread so it's harsh to lambast him with the usual "massive Zlatan" tag just yet.

He is right though, Gene can't really comment on a player he hasn't seen play. His 70 caps for zee Germans is impressive and he has been decent any time i've watched him play. I'm a bit meh on the link but I wouldn't discredit it due to Werder's poor start this season.

Gene is probably half taking the piss with his stance anyway.
