To put things in perspective a little, we always flew at the end of the season under Rafa once we had fuck all (or very little anyways) to play for & the pressure was off.
We're going out for a meal next week with some friends who are Birmingham fans. The conversation could get a little one-sided. ;D

I don't mean to belittle it, really, I just feel the pressure is lifted somewhat so that will be having an effect also, if 4th were on as a real possibility I doubt we'd see such a relaxed & simple performance.

I wouldn't say it was just when we had nothing to play for , a few seasons it coincided with decent champions league runs or when we really needed results . The main reason for me was that Benitez usually settled down with his team selection and allowed the shackles off a bit . He gave an interview a few years ago and said that he rotated during the season to be fresh and kicking on for the end of season campaign when trophies are won. Of course by then we were usually out of it , especially league wise .
It was so frustrating because we would play some really good stuff, he wouldn't rotate and you'd think he's finally getting it and be optimistic for the next season , then he'd start with all his shite tactics and fiddling again .
