Martin O' Neil Set To Manage Liverpool

...says The Belfast Telegraph

Aston Villa boss Martin O’Neill is being lined up to manage Liverpool.

The popular Ulsterman is seen as the natural successor to Rafael Benitez, who is widely believed to be on his way out of Anfield this summer.

Aston Villa boss O’Neill will, however, only be offered the job if Benitez leaves of his own accord, having been linked with moves to both Juventus and Inter Milan.

A senior Anfield insider said last night there was no chance of Benitez being sacked as that would trigger a £16million pay-out to the Spaniard.

O’Neill won’t be drawn on any move away from Villa Park, but he did say yesterday that the club needed serious investment ‘just to stand still’.

“We would have to try and improve the team — I think even just to stand still, we would have to improve the team,†O'Neill said.

“If you start to think everything is absolutely perfect, it's not. You look at those teams that you want to compete against.

“This season apart, Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool are contesting quarter-finals, semi-finals and finals of the Champions League, thrown in with the fact that they can hack it domestically.

“It is tough.â€

Croatian Slaven Bilic has been mentioned as a possible successor to O’Neill should he decide to leave this summer.

Benitez has been making all the right noises about wanting to lead Liverpool to bigger and better things next season, but their seventh place finish in the Premier League could turn out to be the final straw for the fans.

Whatever happens, it promises to be a summer of intrigue at Anfield as a Chinese multi-millionaire last night emerged as a potential new owner.

Internet gaming tycoon Zhu Jun, 44, is reported to be ‘sincerely interested’ in the club after after the American owners, Tom Hicks and George Gillett, formally put the club on the market last month.

An informed source in Shanghai says Zhu has already had two exploratory meetings about buying Liverpool with Barclays Capital, the global investment bank.

An £800m price tag has been circulated in China as a starting point for negotiations among rich potential

I hope the board are thinking long and hard about the direction we are going in regarding the playing side. Replacing Benitez just for a panic change could see us end up with an O'Neil type i.e not an improvement on Benitez.

The turmoil at the club does not stem solely from Benitez, it's much deeper rooted; mainly in the ownership and finance side. Securing stable finances is much more important. By all means change the Manager but do it from a position of strength and try to get the only real candidate worth it: Mourinho.

Whats he done to make you think that Vlad?

He's achieved the same as what past Villa bosses like O'Leary and Gregory managed to do, whilst spending £88m net in the last 3 seasons.

It's not so much what he has done , it is what Rafa has not done.
I am not going to get involved in bigging up O'Niel.

The respective Manager's merits are arguable.

I was thinking more about attracting investment. Investment is more likely to be foreign investment and, no matter wahat we think locally, Benitez is a respected coach abroad and is the incumbent and I would say has a better profile.

Changing the Manager at this stage may put off those who recognise Benitez and his achievements where O'Neil may be less well known to them.

Also, is changing the owners, the Manager; in fact everything all at once wise?

Least we've dodged a bullet...

Steve McClaren has become the new boss of German side Wolfsburg after deciding to leave FC Twente. The former Middlesbrough and England coach has been considering his options after leading Twente to the Dutch title. McClaren is known to have attracted interest from back in Britain, but he has rebuffed the chance to return home in favour of a new experience in Germany. Wolfsburg won the Bundesliga title in 2009, but things did not go so well for them last season and they sacked Armin Veh shortly after the winter break. Lorenz-Gunther Kostner was in caretaker control but he could only guide them to eighth and McClaren has now agreed a three-year deal to take control of the club. take control of the club.

O'Neill is NOT an improvement on Rafa.

If Rafa goes we want better, and MoN certainly isn't that.

I can't stand him, but still think he would be a better manager. I think he has got more out of his team this year than Rafa has out of his

A lucky pen in there derby gave them a 1 point lead over us at the end of the season, he more or less blew his last 4 games, even lost at home on Sunday and could have lost 6th place to us.

Whats he actually done to be 'a better manager'?

Rafa got us to 4 cup finals in 6 years, at least a semi final in every year, has finished top 3 or better in most of his seasons with us.

What makes you think MON can do better?

The only person I can see 'doing better' ie winning us the league is maureen, and thats only with new owners and a wad full of cash, and thats just because he's done it once and could do it again.

Well we can't actually say can we? I happen to think any half decent manager given the resources that Rafa has had over the last few years would have done better than take us to where we are now in fact I happen to think that anyone with a hole in their arse would have done better.
I don't want O'Niel near the place , but there we have it

MON has spent 88 Million at AV in the last 3 years and there, well there shit really are they not?

He in my opinion is deffo a step down.

Heres his Wiki about Villa:

O'Neill was introduced as the Aston Villa manager at a press conference on 4 August 2006. At the press conference he stated "It's absolutely fantastic to be back and with a club such as this. This is a fantastic challenge. I am well aware of the history of this football club. Trying to restore it to its days of former glory seems a long way away – but why not try? It is nearly 25 years since they won the European Cup but that is the dream."

Villa had the longest unbeaten start of any Premiership side in 2006–07 (9 games), not losing a league game until 28 October. Villa suffered a mid-season slump but recovered late in the season, winning their three away games in April, to end the season how it began with a run of 9 unbeaten fixtures. For this O'Neill scooped the Barclays Manager of the Month for April. Villa's final points tally was 50, an improvement of 8 over the previous season.

Aston Villa's owner Randy Lerner said that he would not stop O'Neill from leaving Villa if offered the job of England manager,[4] because he respects that it is a very prestigious position.[4] O'Neill later dismissed the reports, calling them "unfair speculation".[5]

Aston Villa just missed out on a UEFA Cup spot on the final day of the 2007–08 season and qualified for the Intertoto Cup by finishing 6th. They scored 71 goals, (their best ever tally in the Premier League and best tally since winning the title in 1981), gained 60 points which was Villa's highest points tally since the 1996–97 season, and were the 3rd highest goalscorers. After 25 games of the 2008–09 season the club were third in the table on 51 points, 2 points above Chelsea on level games and 7 points above Arsenal in 5th place and on course for a place in the Champions League for the first time since 1983. However, O'Neill then decided to prioritise Champions League qualification above all else, fielding a virtual reserve side for a UEFA Cup game against CSKA Moscow which was subsequently lost.[6] Following this, Villa failed to win any of the next 10 league games and improving form for Arsenal & Chelsea meant that Villa failed to reach the top 4. Villa eventually finished 6th for the second season running with 62 points, 2 more points than they finished with last season.

At the start of the 2009–10 season Villa failed to qualify for the group stage of the newly named Europa League, but have continued their progress in the league with impressive wins against teams such as Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool. Villa were on the way to reaching an achievement that had long since not been reached, which was to beat all "top 4" clubs, consisting of Arsenal, Manchester United, Liverpool and Chelsea. However, Arsenal impressively defeated Villa 3–0 at Emirates Stadium, and drew home, destroying any hopes Villa had of reaching this achievement.

Aston Villa reached their first final under Martin O'Neill, and first final in 10 years on the 28th of February 2010 against Manchester United F.C. in the Carling cup final, but lost 2–1.

Of course not, he's a two bit hack.
I can't stand his teams style of play at all.

I don't understand Asbo, you seem to be trying to complete my argument for me.
He has spent £88m at Villa, a perenial mid-table side who have seen a points haul increase year on year since he has been there, and qualified for Europe a few times and finished above us.
That seems to me to be progress.
Celtic worshiped the ground he walked on and he pulled them up bu their boot laces after the Dalglish-Barnes debacle.

Anyways you seem to be missing my point.
I can't stand O'Niel, he is menatly unstable
He is a good to average manager
My argument is not how good he is , it's how bad Rafa is

regards

Rafa's bad is what MON aspires to become.

Rafa's good, is beyond MON's abilities.

Anyone who wants MON inplace of Rafa is an idiot (not you because you don't), it was a gereralisation to the forum, and those wishing he was our next manager.

As I said in my first post. If Rafa goes, we want BETTER, we don't want to be going backwards, and MON would be going backwards.
