He actually wasn't all bad. He did get flustered in a few places, but there were worse players for it:

Lucas, Shelvey... Gerrard too, made some poor passes

Gerrard and Meireles have played an awful lot of games lately. Meireles played 90 mins in Europa too. Even Lucas has played a lot, but at 23 he should be able to handle that better.

I would have put Shelvey alongside Gerrard, and introduced Johnson for Lucas at Half time. We would have been able to run at them with fresh legs and exploit them.

We were anyway not retaining possession very well. I would have liked to see some wing-play to open them up. Our bench had goals in it, it was not used properly.

Jovonovic and Babel would have been more useful on the wing than Jonjo Shelvey. Thats what i was trying to say.


I don't understand playing CMs out wide business. It is the worst tactic i have ever seen. The only CM we have that can do a good enough job out wide is Gerrard.

Why is Roy refusing to use players who can naturally play well in that position?

Fergusson used to play Hargreaves and other non-wingers on the wing from time to time, and not completely without success. I guess it gives more stability, but less penetration, something like that...
