I think a season or two at RB will be good for Kelly. He's quick and mobile enough to play there, and isn't afraid of getting forward. He also gives us a lot more solidity than Johnson does because his concentration's better, he's a tougher tackler, and he's better in the air. On the evidence of this season, he also looks *fitter* than Magic.
[/quote]
Actually I agree but I just find it difficult to drop Johnson.

He's not been convincing this Season so far but just take a look at the Napoli-game for instance. The way he can challenge any defense (and e.g. win a peno) are a great weapon to have in your team especially when you're playing at home. It seems the way Roy likes to address the game is with two rather stationary central defenders keeping the line solid and then it's vital with attacking-minded backs. I don't think Kelly is yet on par with Johnson in that department and probably never will be and I reckon he's meant as a CB in the long run. He'd thrive from a few more games outthere and with both Europe and the FA Cup to come still there should be plenty of opportunities.

Its early days for kelly but if he picks up from here I've got no problems with him making that position his own.

However I'd rather he didn't at the expense of an 18m player

I can't see him taking Johnsons spot and I'm not even sure he should despite all of Magics difficulties.

That said, he's getting plenty of games and no doubt that will continue over the next season or two. If he continues to improve, he'll find himself a first teamer soon enough.

He did well. We have the added bonus of a bit more aerial power in the side when he plays aswell. Hopefully he will keep improving.

You shouldn't pick players based on their transfer fee. Magic's in terrible form and Kelly's in good form: let the £18m player fight to get his place back off the homegrown youth player.

If we're restricting this to RB I'd agree with that last bit, but why not put Kelly at LB? He's been fine the once or twice we've played him there and, though Konchesky did OK yesterday, there's no doubt in my mind that Kelly's the better player out of those two.

Magic is only coming back from injury and is not in anyway in 'terrible' form.

I do like his attacking play, but I thought he was still a bit brainless in that Napoli game, for the penalty his touch was too heavy and the ball was running away from him, which led to the challenge. Ok, so it was because of his endeavour to get there, I just wish he'd wake up a bit, he just looked so fucking docile and half arsed at times.

Very harsh bunny.

He's been half fit all season, have you forgot just how good he's been prior to this season?

Besides that, kelly has time, whilst glenjo has a ruddy great big price tag

Of course!! Johnson is a Scandinavian name, why could I not see this before.

Look lads it is fairly simple. Johnson is worth his place based on the fact he is very useful going forwards and is an adequate defender, I am happy with that and I like him, when he is on form. Maybe he is still coming back after injury , but he has looked like a lump of lard for most of the season.
Kelly did not put a foot wrong as a conventional full back yesterday and based on Johnsons fitness/form and the fact that Kelly has looked impressive and grabbed the initiative in most/all the games he has been given , I would give him the slot.......until Johnson can prove his worth again.
Why do people keep talking about Johnson's value? What the fuck has the price tag got to do with anything, it's the best man for the job at that particular time.

regards

Konchesky is improving every week. Let's see what his like in another month.

Kelly being offered a new 3 year deal. Great news for the lad. The hardwork is paying off.

True, but dare I say it? Konchesky seems to be settling in and getting better.

There were a couple of times I thought he was doing great. Then I realised it was Miereles on the ball, not him.

He's very good but definitely a CB rather than RB. Although I can see why Roy put Carra in CB instead of a straight swap when Soto pulled out in such a major game.

May he continue to develop and grow on his current skills and attributes!

Haha, same here.

Actually I do agree that he's doing better. Kelly's still the better player though, and has time on his side.

Fernando Torres obviously took all the plaudits after his two goals against Chelsea but Hodgson is seeing signs that other players are starting to finally find their feet.

"A lot of our players need time. Raul Meireles (an £11.5million summer signing) needs time; he is a good footballer but he is not playing anywhere near what he is really capable," said the 63-year-old.

"Maxi Rodriguez had a very good game and Dirk Kuyt came in, we've missed him, and if you are going to single out someone Martin Kelly deserves a lot of praise.

"It was a tough game for him to come into because the left side of Chelsea's attack is a very dangerous one and you have to make some very nuance decisions there and I think he did pretty well.

"He might not have been in the 18 had Sotirios Kyrgiakos and Glen Johnson not gone down with sickness and injury on the morning of the game."

One of the good things about replacing managers is that the newcomer doesn't feel obliged to play the expensive signings of his predecessor.

I would love to see Kelly play more this season.

It's nice to hear a manager praise a youngster after a good game rather than telling him he needs to improve

I think both those styles of management have value.

Young players need to feel a saggy, liverspotted arm around their shoulders after a big match. A few quiet words of encouragement, each one accompanied by its own little fleck of oddly scented spittle, goes a long way.

As a special treat, Roy took Martin for some ice cream after the match. Young players need that kind of environment if they're to flourish.

Liverpool set to reward rising star Martin Kelly with new three-year deal after shackling Chelsea big guns

By Sportsmail Reporter Last updated at 9:08 PM on 8th November 2010

Liverpool are to reward young defender Martin Kelly with a new three year deal.

The 20-year-old has made a big impression at Anfield and started at right back against Chelsea on Sunday.

Kelly was highly praised for his perforamance in the 2-0 win after helping shackle the likes of free-scoring Florent Malouda and Nicolas Anelka.

I would give Kelly a run in the same formation, with GJ playing a more forward RM role...

GJ is quick, a decent crosser of the ball, and has a decent shot, and he would not really have to worry about defending as much as when he is @ RB...
He should should be able to adequately defend in that position and still get forward as much as he clearly wants too...
