Martin Kelly

Not for the first time though this season. Biggest positive in Hodgson's reign for me so far. Bit optimistic, but he could possibly be Carra's eventual replacement in the centre of the defence.

His debut was in the CL so I knew he could be trusted for this one.

He was caught out a bit in the second half when Chelsea were throwing everything at us - but that's a small criticism in what was a brilliant performance for someone so young.

I really like him a lot.

Yeah, hope he proved a point to Roy (regarding the youth v experience point he mentioned). Probably wouldn't have started had either Johnson or the Greek been available. Way to go, Kelly!

Fair play to Woy, he made a brave decision in playing him and he did well. Good to see him willing to give Shelvey and Spearing some game time too.

Did he play him because he trusted him or did he play him because Magic pulled out before the match?

Big, tall, powerful, bit of pace, can learn from one of the finest Premiership defenders ever.

He has every chance.

I guess its cos of the absences. Would've been either Johnson @ RB and Carra partnering Greek/Skrtel or Carra @ RB with Greek and Skrtel as CBs. Still, hope he'd brought some message across.

I'd give the lad a decent run in the first team ahead of Johnson.

I'd sit Meireles on the bench and put Kelly and Johnson on the right flank, and see how they go.

Meireles is a good player. But i'm liking 4-4-2 with Kuyt and Torres up top. One of Lucas or Meireles have to play with Gerrard in the center. Lucas has done no wrong recently to be benched.

If we get 6 points in the next two games, i'll have some serious egg on my face regarding Roy Hodgson.

I don't doubt Kelly's skills whatsoever, I just was a bit worried about all the pre match talk of Magic playing at left back.

Well if you're not going 4-4-2, I don't think you could drop Deadly for Johnson for the right wing slot.

Meireles hasn't done anything wrong either, and offers more going forward.

Were you trying to quote kingjulian? You confused me for a minute.

I don't care that Kelly played because of injuries to other players. I care that he put in a great shift.

He was immense. Talk about a baptism of fire and he came out a better player.

His future is whatever he wants it to be.

His defending was first rate today.

Don't really care if Glenjo is better going forward, at the moment I'd rather have someone dependable at the back.

x2

Top performance. Hopefully Budgie trusts him in the future on days when he's not facing a defensive crisis.

Yeah, he couldn't have had a much tougher time than that second half. At one point he was trying to defend against three Chelsea players because they overloaded that side, and it took Roy a few minutes to pinpoint the problem. Meireles wasn't giving Kelly enough help, and it was only when Kuyt got back as well that we put out the fire. But Kelly kept his composure despite being repeatedly outflanked, and worked incredibly hard.

On form, there's no way in hell that Magic should displace him.

Truesay! His positioning and awareness is better than Johnson's based on today's game. I saw him make a headed interception and the first thought that came to mind was "Johnson wouldn't have been in the position to intercept that." Up against Malouda and A.Cole, good showing! I like this.

Look, Johnson is a great player - he is better going forwards than defending that is pretty obvious, that is not to say he is a bad defender , he isn't. However Kelly really is a better defender, and while Johnson is miles off form , Kelly should keep his place.
As for someone, Julian , I think, suggesting dropping Miereles to accomodate Johnson on the right, that is madness, he has proven to be a great signing and getting better each game.
I think , like most people Lucas had a great game today, but Miereles will always get the nod and quite rightly.

regards

Yep...I'm a fan of Meireles. A very shrewd footballer. Good touch, a thinking brain and a good engine to deliver the work rate...what's not to like!

I was just wondering how we can accommodate Johnson, Kuyt, Lucas, Meireles, Maxi, Gerrard and Torres in the front 6 of a 4-4-2. One of them needs to be benched. I didn't want to disturb the working Central Midfield partnership of Gerrard and Lucas at this moment. n all fairness, Meireles and Gerrard seems like a good partnership too, and i wouldn't mind seeing that either.

But Roy will probably leave Johnson on the bench and that isn't a bad idea either. But i just like to see Johnson because he brings pace to our one paced midfield. It would not be a bad option to have him on the bench.

Dropping Meireles???

Id fucking cry. He has been exactly what i expected..

Clever Footballer, good passing and movement and makes things happen. Still delighted with his signing. yay.

Personally I'd still play Johnson whenever fit as he's our best RB.

That said Kelly has really been justifying the hype of late and long may it continue. Maybe the time is soon up for him to be tried in central?

With Agger's continued struggle on the sideline with injury it's evident we could end up getting good use of him alongside side either of three fit CBs now and then. I'd love for him to play alongside Carra in central for a game or two at least, he could and is obviously learning a lot from the living legend.

I think a season or two at RB will be good for Kelly. He's quick and mobile enough to play there, and isn't afraid of getting forward. He also gives us a lot more solidity than Johnson does because his concentration's better, he's a tougher tackler, and he's better in the air. On the evidence of this season, he also looks *fitter* than Magic.
