Sorry to disagree with so many of you. I thought it was a good performance in that there was some excellent application with just a couple of exceptions.

However, when Gerrard went off, we just didn't have the quality to actually hurt them. We are several players off from being close to competing.
Come on Gene - how many teams would 'have the quality' to hurt United, 1-0 up at home, when their best player is sent off after 30 mins?

In the circumstances it was a very encouraging performance.

I actually think we are just two ..... if Aurelio can stay fit and Kelly stays at RB then a LW and a quality striker to support / stand-in / sub for Torres. Johnson could then be another option at RM too.

Arsenal, Man City, Tottenham, Chelsea.

Most spirited performance in years in my opinion.

Kelly easily MOTM.

We are back.

I know everyone hopes/thinks Shelvey is going to be a superstar but I thought it was really strange to take of Meirless for him. His touch was atrocious when he came on and he reminds me of a giraffe when he's trying to move; slow, seemingly always on the wrong foot and constantly looks like he's about to lose his balance.

I'm not sure we're several players away from competing but I will say I thought the effort was there with a couple of exceptions. Most of them looked like they were finished with 10 minutes to go.

Reina's quadruple save was a highlight!!!

Positives

Our Manager changed the formation during the game when he saw something wasn't working.

Our Manager made positive substitutions to try and get something from the game

Our manager made EARLY substitutions.

We have a manager who KNOWS WHAT HE IS DOING

Encouraging performance, valiant, proud of the effort put in by the players in the circumstances. Two decisions, could of gone either way to be fair, but that's football.

Kind of agree with Gene, other than the Aurelio FK, we hardly mustered any quality moves or shots on goal, I know it was difficult circumstances but we looked a bit short of ideas when we got the ball up there.

It'll be interesting to see how we approach our next few games without Gerrard, but a well done from me.

Kenny helped sign Shelvey, didn't he? Obviously he rates and believes in the lad, and he gave him a chance today. He looks to me like what he is: a talented but extremely young player, whose mentality is not as mature as his biology (to misquote Morrissey): big, strong and spirited, but makes too many wrong decisions. He'll only improve by playing though, and being well-coached.

My Anger left with the Hodge

I think Thommo gave the side yesterday Kelly at RB with Johnno in front of him, and that would have been it today except for his Girlfriend going into labour, I look forward to seeing it tried on Maybe Weds or againt the Bitters

Yeh Shelvey is still a kid, let's give him a chance !
I don't think I'm suggestinghe not have a chance but I'm pretty sure there will be more appropriate times to give him a chance than the FA cup against the mancs when we're a goal down and playing with 10.

Anyway, it didn't cost us the game or anything but I'm hopeful that Meriless doesn't make way too many times unless he truly is ruined - which didn't look the case to me today.

We lost a match in the FA Cup and I don't feel down at all.

we was robbed by Gillian Berbatov McKeith, and Webb

But we played with passion

and Kenny made so many positives

that I'll have to go buy some Shades, because the futures so bright!

Let's not get too carried away. We've had loads of one off performances over the last few years. We need a consistent run of 5 or 6 games with that approach before I'll allow myself to be convinced

It's a good start though, and that'll do me for today.

to be honest the biggest positive I took from the game was kenny saw problems and moved to address them and wasn't scared to take of the only recognised striker either.

I definately feel we could have gambled a bit more, it was a cup tie and we had nothing to lose, we were definately afraide to conceed the 2nd goal which would have killed the game but when we got to 85 mins we should have commited more bodies to the attack, if we got caught on the break then so be it, 1-0 or 2-0 we're still going out.

all in all I'm pleased with the effort and pleased kenny seems to want to do the obvious (playing the likes of aurelio and agger) but my expectations are definately in check and I see kenny's appointment in the way it should be viewed, a short term calming influence that will unite the fans and inspire the players until the long term manager is in place next season.

Agree with this, we have upped our game against the bigger sides this season already so it's no surprise we played with a bit of heart and passion but we need to take it into the next few games, and without gerrard aswel

Yes definitely a little cause for hope. I refuse to allow myself to get excited about any of this just yet though given all the false dawns over the last two decades...

Berbacunt MOTM?

My united supporting friend thought he deserved it as he was always on the ball and won the pen. I don't agree but no one else stood out bar Howard Webb.

Kelly was our MOTM. Has he had a poor game for us yet?

make no mistake, there is a long road ahead of us. firstly to to become top 4 challengers and then to become league challenges. this is going to be difficults as there are at least 5 teams with better sqauds than us.

when it comes to attracting places we can't offer massive wages of the likes of man city or the captial like spurs, arsenal and chelsea, it will also be difficult to hold onto the select few world class stars we have. we need someone that will think outside the box both with regards to aquiring talent and the way we play to get the most of that talent.

is kenny the man for the long term task? my hearlt would like it to be kenny but my head says nesv have already identified the man for the long term task and he isn't availible until the summer hence why they wanted roy to see out the season but poor resulted dictated that this wasn't possible.

Arsenal have a wage limit I believe?

And come 2013 ALL clubs have to live on thier income, and make no mistake, WE ARE a rich club on income, and will only be topped by United and very similar to Arse and Chelsea, and easily above City Spurs etc.

If we have our new ground we will compete with United too
