Man City Post Match - Happy New Year!!!

Everybody can win when they're playing well. The mark of champions is still to win when they aren't at their best. Me likey.

Bring on the New Year. 😎

I think we were excellent, we sacrificed our usual attacking brilliance (although we still attacked very well) to put in a defensive masterclass, City barely had a sniff, a City team with the attacking talents of Aguero, Silva, Toure, Sterling and De Bruyne, that's an exceptional achievement by our team. Poor defensively? Only when we want to be.

Yep. Big win.

I thought we should have done better on the break, especially in the first half where we looked far superior however after the break City were far better and our passing was just horrible, always a yard short or long. However excellent defending when under pressure, as a team. Lovren stepped up too after frankly having a pretty awful first half.

Not our most fluent win but did they even have a real chance ? I think not.

Tremendous performance.

Excellent from Lallana and Wijnaldum. Entire back line was great, especially the two fullbacks. Mignolet was generally untroubled.

Well done by Klopp.

We were very poor 2nd half, lost all composure and hung on as opppsed to defended well.

Having said that, who gives a fuck.

Massive massive win.

City could well be out of the top tomorrow with Utd only a game behind.

Crazy.

Gini easily MOTM for me.

Klavan and Lallana also very good.

Buzzing

We weren't ruthless enough near their goal. That game should have been put to bed some time before the final whistle.

OK,Grinch imitation over. 🙂

That was a very different and unexpected kind of win, its good to know we have it in us.

Hopefully Henderson isn't out for too long. Very much an off day for firmino, I find him difficult to watch.

Disagree, we worked hard but were all over the place at times and had little composure.

Origi did very well but would have loved to see Studge on last 15 too

Sends a message to Chelski. Under the cosh way too much once Henderson went off, shows how big a cog he is.

A few more thoughts ...

  • How can you rate Mign here? Did he have anything to do bar take on Aguero's long range shot that my nonna would have saved?
  • The back 4 were all EXCELLENT - stood up against a great attacking unit and made them look average. De Whoyne? Ague-who? Silva was invisible bar 2-3 moments in the 2nd half, and Sterling ... well Sterling looked like utter crap. Seeing him play like utter shit is always a bonus!
  • Special mention to Klavan. Lovren was better than him imo - but to play at the level he did on one yellow was fantastic. Loved the tackle on De Bruyne.
  • Henderson - any update on that? Precautionary?
  • Gini - fantastic header ... really good game. I think he shades it for MOtM
  • Lallana - great shift - you could see why Klopp pushed up to the front 3. Great pass on the goal.
  • Can - he did what he was there for, make it harder for city to play their game and be physical.
  • Firmino - Not sure why people were so hard on him in the game thread. His pass set up the counter that gave us the game winner and he was making city's life miserable by moving everywhere. I look forward to seeing him with Coutinho again in the coming weeks.
  • Mane - he could have done more ... great shift nonetheless, where his presence caused them so many headaches.
  • Origi - was off the pace, as we had 3-4 counters with him involved that just didn't work well. The last 5-10 minutes where he was shielding the ball near the corners were great.
3 points not related to the players:
  • Fantastic set up by Klopp. I think Pep was caught off guard - we didn't play our game as much today I felt. We were looking to make it harder for them to play - which caused them headaches for most of the game ... Pep struggles to change games - he's always had Plan A and finito. Klopp caught him off guard and that made them look like an average team.
  • The ref & linesmen were fucking terrible. Piedro will probably have a go at me but he let far too many things go - offside calls that were ignored for deep throw ins for us, missed fouls etc ... Despite that, we still controlled the game.
  • We've been missing Coutinho for weeks ... and yet, we're winning and playing good football. It's a sign of a maturing team ... Let's see how we do without Mane ...
Lastly, I hope Pat's Manc friends are not too disappointed with the result.

I found that very stressful. Gini, Lallana and Milner stood out for me. Didn't overly like Can's performance. He was thundering around without much purpose and seemed to be fouling constantly.

Excellent win. We can go and enjoy our NYE now.

Man City did not have a single clear cut chance, what else could we have done to convince you? It was an outstanding defensive performance.

Yep city were there for the taking, they are 10 pts back now and probably the worst city side I've seen in 5 years.

Still tonight was all about the 3pts.

People's online criticism of Klopp was he couldn't change his style and I think tonight he did. Much more measured with our pressing

Bigger than Texas, that.

Watch yer mouth!!

We know we can beat the big teams and also score for fun ( see this result last year). What this showed is that we can also put out a different game plan of giving nothing away at the back and playing right. We won ugly. Many of us wanted to see this too. So yeah delighted - we passed another test.

Ps they had *no real chances*

Firmino gave the ball away at least twice to set them up for attacks, unforced errors like that from extremely skillful and competent players do my head in. He also failed to control an excellent ball that would put him through on goal and fucked up a 1 yard pass to lallana that would send him through against the keeper.

I was hard on him because I expect better. He's playing up front and he could have been one of the reasons for a draw if city got lucky and scored.

I think our fans are horribly one eyed when it comes to refs, I thought he was firmly on our side.

Friends are sickened which is fantastic especially after them winning so late. Granted it's still a good resent for Utd as they are chasing 4th and we'll be 2nd now I'm sure

Man City did not have a single clear cut chance, what else could we have done to convince you? It was an outstanding defensive performance.

We were good at the back, yes, but definitely patchy going forward. To me that adds up to a good performance but short of "outstanding" overall.

Just to add this doesn't worry me overmuch. In fact it's a very good sign that we brought the points home anyway.

Terrific result from a strange game. I thought we were in total control in the first half but were very sloppy and sat too deep in the second. Klavan man of the match for me...great performance after picking up the early yellow.

Gini was excellent...his play and role reminds me so much of Ronnie Whelan.

We missed Henderson a lot when he went off.

Firmino was gash, as was the referee.

Here's to 2017!

Wowww! Yessss!
What a win!
It might not have been great football, but it was a clear message - we mean business!
We can win games playing flowing football, but we can also win games with a lot of sweat and hard work.

I'm very happy! Now let's keep the momentum and beat Sunderland!

Fuck what a win this is.

What's that 3 wins from 3 against our nearest rivals. 2 away from home.

Sensational.

Let's just hope now we can rotate and recover in time for Sunderland

Epic! Controlled throughout. Only a few negatives but hey ho let's not dwell on that. YNWA. Happy New Year everyone!

Not a spectacle but we did what we needed to do to grind out the win.

A controlled performance, what did Migs have to do?

Defended as a unit and never committed ourselves into sloppy errors....some of the passing was bad but expected.
