I think Meireles does it more.

They should be made tackle each other and whoever wins stays 8)

Loads of people liked him before he played against Malaysia actually.
None of those "people" seem to be managers of European football clubs it seems.
The quotation marks are unnecessary and the transfer window has a way to go.
I dont understand the glee with which some "people" want to point out a players flaws.
Theres players i dont rate playing for us, but everygame i want them to go out and smash.
There are a LOT of posters on here willing Alberto to fail (Q many posters who are, noe saying they arent).
Guess what, if you get your wish, we are worse off. Tsk.

People take a pretty ridiculous stance over Aquilani. There are grey areas in football which some people seem too keen to overlook. The black and white of it is that Aquilani failed. Is that the whole truth though?

He's had injury problems, he's fairly lightweight (though hardly the first or worst) and he didn't get off to a good start under Rafa, whom seemed too reluctant to disrupt his side, despite the fact it was struggling for creativity.

When he did start to get games on a regular basis few could argue with his impact, he was bright, creative and had a hand in a few goals. He's just had a good season back in Italy, and today, allbeit against a two-bit side, he showed what a talent he can be in terms of spark and making things happen. He's not shit and personally I couldn't give a fuck what 'managers of European football clubs' think, it's not like they're never wrong. Rafa shit out, Hodgson was a fucking joke and now Kenny seems to be at least giving him a chance to show what he can do. So what?

Things I'VE learned from this game.......

1. Its pre season and its about improving the fitness and conditioning of the players........and not for knee jerk reactions!
Yep, agree completly. Some on here need a reality check. Its pre season, you train hard and get fitness through games withot thinking of the result or individual performances.

Oh, and the Carroll comments are way ott. He looked knackered from the start and Joe Cold played 46 meaningless passes towards him. Still, 1 goal, 1 assist and got the penalty today so far this pre season. More games and training and he'll be a beast come season kick off.

Have some patience ffs.

This first part kinda reminds of Cole.

I think it's far too easy for people to jump on the "Ming and aqua are shithouses" bandwagon. They're both attacking midfielders. We have midfield enforcers in spearing, Lucas and maybe even gerrard if required. They've carved out a space in the team for themselves as such so let's leave the crunching tackles to them.

All I said was he was slow and ponderous and played like a donkey today. Is that not true?
I'm sure he will get fitter and stronger.

Not aimed at you Sheik, more a comment for a couple of posts early in the thread. He looked knackered after 3 mins today. Off pace and touch of a rapist. Dont doubtfor a second he'll be on firevwhen the season starts.

So did a lot of the lads though, the heath and humidity probably didnt help either.

id be the first to admit im ott on my criticism of carroll, its mainly because i had a bad gut feeling when we got him, not that that means fuck all mind, so obviously every time he's not amazing i jump to absurd cocnclusions

thoughts:

1. i think meireles is a goner. he's got the look of a player who's already been told he's off imo, which is a shame really cos he's a victim of us being unable to sell aquilani.
2. exciting from aquilani, nontheless. he's got a lot going for him, but the same problem is still there: where does he fit in? that was somewhat of a problem in rafa's last season, but far more so now we seem to be trying to build a side around andy carroll and stewart downing.
3. carroll: i'm less convinced than ever (yeah yeah, early days). not so much that he won't flourish with service from adam and downing - i think he will - but whether he's anywhere near good enough to warrant £60m of investment. i know it's futile, but watching that 2nd half today, i can't help wondering what a team we'd have with a front 3 of kuyt-Torres-suarez and aquilani sitting behind them. it's done now, and i'll get behind it and hope they all prove me wrong, but frankly i'm pretty concerned by how we've spent since we signed suarez.

I was thinking I'd love Carroll to have played in the 2nd half team instead. Much more movement in midfield and down the wings.

Cole, Meireles, Coady and Spearing were very ordinary. Not much service.
Will be interesting to see when we field a stronger first eleven in the coming weeks. Many players will step up a few notches then.

completely agree, there was no drive at all from the support players.

Disagree re Meireles looking like a player heading off. He was played out of position and most of the players didn't really seem arsed in the first half.

Positives
Adam getting his first goal in a Liverpool jersey
Maxi and Ngog getting a couple of confidence boosting finishes
Aqualani looked like he was really enjoying himself
Insua looks like he spent the last year lifting weights rather than gaining weight

Negatives
Conceded too many goals against a poor side
A couple of players still look miles off being match fit (Cole/Carroll)

These tours are largely a publicity exercise and a good oppurtunity to get the squad into camp for some basic fitness work, we should see the number of players and formations used being whittled down over the next couple of weeks, the serious work is still to come

FFS there's some miserable (and some who are just plain hysterical) twats on here.

Didn't watch the game, but based on the goals alone I don't want Jones, and whoever was wearing 13, anywhere near our goal. Piss poor positioning on the goals.

I thought the exact opposite. His passing was fantastic at times, and I agree with those who made him MOTM, but he actually looked pretty down-in-the-mouth to me (even during the goal celebrations) and barely raised a smile all game.

ooh, that's a bit worrying. hey, you don't think that might possibly mean he's desperately unhappy away from Italy and will be absolutely, categorically, unable to do well for Liverpool, do you???

Er, you must have missed the bit where I made him MOTM, peter. If we do keep him and if he can play like that in serious games, even while hankering after a return home, fair enough. The jury's still very much out on both those things though.

He's in Malaysia you see, which is even further from Italy than the UK. Aquialani's unhappiness increases proportionally to his distance from mama Italia.

2. Why ask where he fits in?

Everyone seems obsessed with this concept. The best teams in the world have more than one quality player in every position, yet our fans seem to think we must have 11 definite first team players & a further 11 who clearly arent as good so they can sit & wait for someone to become injured.

As for playing style, to assume that we'll suddenly try to put everything down the wings is absurd, it simply gives us another option. Utd have never run everything through giggs, they use every attacking option at different times.

LOL

For those worried that Aqua might actually be kept on with us, fear not, I think the offal gives a better impression of his future than Henry's tweets. He is barely mentioned despite a clear MOTM performance. It is all about Adam scoring and stuff.

Worried? I'm worried we'll get shut of him, if he stays he'll win us a lot of games.

fine, it's just not another option i'm particularly convinced about. i'd have preferred a different kind of striker from carroll (mobile and technical) and a different kind of wide player from downing (again, skillful and creative, able to open space by beating a player or with a cute pass: a Nasri).

for me it's about having options and strings in your bow. in carroll we have added a target man - an option for away games where holding up the ball is vital and whe've added downing - the option of having a winger who will get chalk on his boots and deliver accurate crosses.
the more options you have the less predictable you become.

I agree in some ways, as I worry that it might damage that fast flowing passing we had towards the tail end of last season.

I also think that we could perhaps use it when that football isn't quite enough though, which will presumably happen from time to time, Adam's set pieces, Downings crosses & Carroll's headers will give us another dimension to our play we've not had since Gary mac was here.
