thoughts:
1. i think meireles is a goner. he's got the look of a player who's already been told he's off imo, which is a shame really cos he's a victim of us being unable to sell aquilani.
2. exciting from aquilani, nontheless. he's got a lot going for him, but the same problem is still there: where does he fit in? that was somewhat of a problem in rafa's last season, but far more so now we seem to be trying to build a side around andy carroll and stewart downing.
3. carroll: i'm less convinced than ever (yeah yeah, early days). not so much that he won't flourish with service from adam and downing - i think he will - but whether he's anywhere near good enough to warrant £60m of investment. i know it's futile, but watching that 2nd half today, i can't help wondering what a team we'd have with a front 3 of kuyt-Torres-suarez and aquilani sitting behind them. it's done now, and i'll get behind it and hope they all prove me wrong, but frankly i'm pretty concerned by how we've spent since we signed suarez.

2. Why ask where he fits in?
Everyone seems obsessed with this concept. The best teams in the world have more than one quality player in every position, yet our fans seem to think we must have 11 definite first team players & a further 11 who clearly arent as good so they can sit & wait for someone to become injured.
As for playing style, to assume that we'll suddenly try to put everything down the wings is absurd, it simply gives us another option. Utd have never run everything through giggs, they use every attacking option at different times.

fine, it's just not another option i'm particularly convinced about. i'd have preferred a different kind of striker from carroll (mobile and technical) and a different kind of wide player from downing (again, skillful and creative, able to open space by beating a player or with a cute pass: a Nasri).
