So he keeps getting mentioned (in no small part thanks to @KFC).

What do people think?

I'm inclined towards a no.

He's very talented and brilliant on his day but he seems like a luxury player that for the most part, top managers no longer tolerate in their teams. Everyone has to play their part for the team.

How would Klopp / Mourinho / Guardiola handle Mahrez failing to track back repeatedly?

A large part of my reasoning is this:

26 seems to be the riskiest age to buy a winger.

This article goes into more detail for anyone interested:

Na, I don't think He's cut out to play the intense football Klopp needs from his players.
Unless there was specific DM who could then allow Mahrez to focus less on the defensive aspect of the game and that ain't happening

No thanks. Good player for a mid-table team. He's that luxury player you build a team around.

At LFC, we can't carry passengers like him defensively. Our system relies on everyone working hard. Coutinho included.

What I do like about Mahrez, is he has the eye and ability for a final pass. That's the big thing we will miss if Phil leaves.

Mane/Mo are runners. We need a Phil-type replacement to play them in. I'd sooner prefer Ozil over Mahrez (as despite the critique of his work rate, he's actually got good running/sprint stats at Arsenal).

Good player with vision and touch, see his pass to vardy the other week against us, made it look easy. The fee would be a worry though, anywhere circa 40 million in today's market would be value as he stats (goals and assists) are way better than the ox, before we signed him.

The only reason I'm inclined to say no is that he can only really play one position, and that's Salah's wide right slot.

He's devastating from there, drifting in on his left, but Salah is better.

I'd take Vardy mind you. He'd be fucking brilliant for us.

Vardy increasingly showing not a one season wonder and has incredible record against top 6 opponents. Despite being older, he also doesn't have the miles on him due to his relatively recent emergence into top flight football.

Where does this entrenched belief that he is a luxury player who doesn't work for the team / track back etc come from?

He seemed pretty hardworking the year Leicester won the League... I'd have him or Lemar in a heartbeat.
It's not like Coutinho is some defensive powerhouse either.
