Not a scapegoat thread here.. He is not to blame for tonight's performance, far from it..

But my god what has gone wrong with this signing.. ?

He consistently gives the ball away, and plays like he is devoid of all confidence. I feel incredibly uneasy when he goes in for a tackle too.. Very clumsy..

He was great for Southampton right?

As for Brendon.. Why stick a player lacking in confidence as your 5th penalty taker?

Thought he was decent tonight, as he's been since coming in as a sub 3 times.
He'll get lamblasted though.

Doesnt look like he can save his Liverpool career at this rate.
Wouldnt be surprised to see him move on this summer if he cant get out of the Charlie Adam syndrome.

Ballsy saying yes to taking a penalty but we should have had someone else step up.

Generally the players themselves decide who will be taking the kicks, if Lovren put his hand up for it then thats fair enough. Agree though he has been an unmitigated disaster of a signing

I thought he was okay today; I actually don't blame the defence for today - we gave away the midfield and any attacking initiative in the second half, and even with our recent improved defensive record, we're still not impregnable yet. Took a wonder strike to beat Mignolet, but the warning signs were there long before that as we kept giving them space and freedom to pick their spots and shoot way before their goal.

I think the soak-and-counter strategy was okay, contrary to popular opinion - we could've killed the tie off in the first half if we'd taken our chances. I'd thought it'd work, but didn't factor in the really awful performances by Sterling and Sturridge on the day, and Balotelli, despite his improved effort in the first half, hardly contributed to any attacks. When he blasted the long-distance shot in the first half, I knew he'd lost his mind again and had to be yanked. Again, we took just too long to make changes and had surrendered all initiative by the time we did.

Kudos to Besiktas though - they played well and deserved to go through. Just a shame the game had to end with an awful penalty after a string of nine stunning ones.

Oops I digress; well penalty aside, Lovren was actually okay. Best he's played in a while actually.

If he leaves this summer we're going to take a massive hit on the fee. 8-10 mill I reckon is the most we can get at this point.

Erm he's just played his best game in a while, in my opinion. Why should we be in a rush to cut him? See if he'll keep improving, let him have the summer to get himself sorted out, then let's see how he does in pre-season and the new season. He's not doing well but at least he's put in a decent display after being sidelined for so long; it's not Titus Bramble hopeless territory yet.

He was never an improvement on Agger..

We got well bummed..

Bought Lovren for 20 million the better defender leaves for buttons..

He just looks awkward and clumsy to me. Not the attributes you want from a defender..

Poor lad probably wants to bury his head in the sand tonight, after that miss..

What a disappointment he has been. I was well made up with his signing this summer but it has been a complete disaster.

Never mind this competition - was an alternative route to the CL if we had gone onto win it but at least there are fewer games for the team as a whole which will make them more focussed for the league, and perhaps the FA Cup.

I knew he was going to miss. It was just so right. The others look like they belong. This guy doesn't.

I thought he actually played pretty well tonight. Feel sorry for the guy. At least he had the balls to step up, but this will probably set him back. Overall he's been a big disappointment, but I think we should give him some more time. If we sell we'll be taking a serious sized hit.

His passing was varied but consistently awful. It was like watching Robin Hood put a succession of arrows to his bow, one of them broken, one of them really a banana, another a piece of string...

I presume he wanted to take to and felt he could score. He seems a cocky enough player. Maybe he felt taking one might resurrect his career here a bit? I had a feeling he'd take one. Wasn't sure if he'd score or not. Terrible pen. Moreno or Sturridge should be stepping up before him in hindsight.

He made a pass at around 60 minutes and 40 seconds. Under very little pressure, he lamped the ball at Moreno at head hight. It would have been funny if we'd won.

Well, when my co-worker told me Spurs had gotten knocked out, I was pissed. Cause they wouldn't have to contend with the extra games and flights. They could probably turn that into better performances in the league. So if we weren't going to win the thing, which we weren't - we might as well be out at the first opportunity. It looks like we got the booby trap with Lovren.

Wanyama, Schneiderlin, Clyne and even Fonte and possibly even Chambers. Yet we bought Lovren and United took Shaw. We should have just bought the club, taken the first team and sold the club again. Would have saved money.

At this point, I am starting to think he is just a mediocre defender. I understand that confidence makes players look better and given a consistent run in the team and a leadership role he craves, Lovren's performance would probably improve somewhat. But what I don't understand is why we should we build around him at all, when he is not showing any outstanding qualities that would make the trouble worth it. His passing is worse than Sakho's and Skrtel's, let alone Can's. His positioning is generally suspect – to be fair he didn't too much wrong against Besiktas, but in almost every other game he started for us in his career there have been at least a couple of glaring positional mistakes. He is slower than our other defenders bar Toure, not physically imposing, not particularly agile or balanced. So what's he actually good at?

I am just trying to remember what made me think earlier in the season that he was actually good. There was some vague touch of class about him last season and in the first few games this season, some kind of arrogance in his playing that made me think that he knows what he's doing and it's the other defenders who are in the wrong. With every mistake this image has been further tarnished and now even as his form is improving somewhat I am starting to think the emperor had no clothes all along.

Ronnie Whelan made an interesting point when discussing Lovren on the TV commentary last night. He said, quite rightly, that there have been good players before who came to LFC and didn't make it there because they couldn't cope with the weight of expectation. I wonder if Lovren's suffering from that and essentially needs to be a big fish in a smaller pond in order to play his best.

There's an odd dichotomy with Lovren, I think - he gives me the impression of both someone who believes he is better than he actually is, and someone who has got no confidence in himself. He's lost at the club. I suspect he bought into the whole idea that he was the missing piece in the defence and that he would stroll in and make us impregnable but is genuinely baffled that things keep going wrong.

You may well be on to something there. I'd have only one reservation about the above, namely that I'm not sure how odd such a dichotomy really is. In my experience there's often a lack of genuine confidence at the heart of such behaviour.

Shame. I liked Lovren previously and was happy with the signing, but it'll now be best for all concerned if we ship him out in the summer IMHO.

The folly of signing players for exorbitant fees on the back of one good year in the Prem. A lesson we seemingly struggle to learn.

Am I the only who always thought Lovern was a bit over-rated before he signed with us? I've seen some of his performances with Southampton, and to be honest I never saw as anything more than average. I was very iffy about us signing him.

Having said that, I thought he did well last night. I was gutted for him when he missed the penalty.

Re the penalties. Toure should have taken one. Just scored in the shootout at ACN and scored earlier in the season.

I knew Lovren would miss. Was just set up that way. Shame though, as a goal could have done something to salvage his career. He looks done. An expensive flop.
Shame he didn't come in to a settled back 4 or 3, that might have made things different. His confidence seem shot.
Only possibility now is Mignolets missus talking to him..
