Liverpool reportedly fear that Steven Gerrard will require an operation to cure his groin injury.
Gerrard will be absent again when Liverpool travel to Fulham on Saturday having been last seen limping out of the Champions League tie with Lyon two weeks ago after aggravating the injury he first suffered on international duty.
According to The Daily Mail, 'Liverpool are perplexed by Gerrard's slow recovery. They are reluctant to opt for surgery but it may be an option if the injury fails to respond to treatment.'
A concurring Daily Express also reckons that Gerrard 'remains a major doubt for the Champions League showdown with Lyon' next week and describes Rafa Benitez as 'growing increasingly concerned over his skipper's fitness'.
'The player has a history of groin problems - twice previously he has undergone surgery - and suffered the latest injury against the Ukraine three weeks ago. He aggravated the problem in the home defeat by Lyon last week and missed the Premier League win over United and Wednesday's Carling Cup reverse at Arsenal,' it reports.
Officially, however, Gerrard is yet to be ruled out and is still receiving treatment from the club's medical department.
Fernando Torres is fit for the match at Craven Cottage while it is likely that Alberto Aquilani will be named in the squad and is set to be named as a substitute for the game.
