Local lads you wished had made it

I always wished we hadn't sold Mike Marsh, that Stephen Warnock and Stephen Wright had really made the grade and that Martin Kelly would blossom into a killer CB a la Carra.

Yeah, was a bit gutted Warnock never made it and that he was so plauged with injuries.
Was it against Fulham when he scored his first and probably only goal at Anfield for us?
Celebrated like he had won the cup final. Loved it.

If I you had an actual DeLorean you'd feel most compelled to do Wayne Harrison a favour. Otherwise David Thompson and Adam Hammill.

Long before most of ye were born.........Brian Kettle. When I was a kid he seemed to be captain of our reserve team for eternity and they were hugely successful under him; they won the reserve league nearly every year and the cup regularly too. I've just googled him to find that in 7 seasons he only made 4 first team appearances. He was a left back and unfortunately for him Alec Lindsay and then Joey Jones were hardly ever injured.

I still have my scrapbooks from back then and he appears in many of the squad photo's. I suspected that when he left LFC he'd go on to have a good career with someone else but he faded into obscurity almost immediately.

Agree about Martin Kelly. I was convinced he'd go on to be a classy centre half for us, probably for 10 years or more.

He seemed to have everything.

Not all of these would've made the grade, but I wish they'd had more chances. Some of them would come into the team, play once or twice in a cup game, seem to do okay, and then disappear, never to be seen again.

Stephen Wright
Robbie Threlfall
Craig Lindfield
Stephen Warnock
Jay Spearing
Adam Morgan

I really hoped Warnock, Spearing and Morgan would succeed, while I was surprised to see Wright offloaded. Threlfall and Lindfield I thought I saw play for us, but probably those were pre-season games. I thought they performed well in those games, but never saw them get a chance.

I hope everybody on our books makes it. Bit of a strange thread for me.

I may not be remembering correctly, but I always thought Jon Otsemobor would make it. He looked very talented in the few games he played for us.

The manager who had him for his Sunday league team once said I could be as good as him - not sure if that's a compliment now looking back at it.

Probably just referring to the bullet in the backside part, but who knows, maybe you really could kick a ball on Sundays.

But yeah, Otsemobor is a strange case. Brilliant debut, then had a nightmarish 20 minutes in a game and was yanked... and never seen again I think.

Sometimes I wonder how those kids with good potential we had over all these years would have fared if they had been given the chances Rodgers has given the current ones.

Haha I'm nowhere near gangster enough for that unfortunately. I say Sunday, but we played Saturdays. Y'know, semantics.

Good calls here. Currently I'm really sad about Kelly, it looks like the injuries have really taken something from him. There's been the odd one whose attitude was bad enough to diminish the sense of regret - eg. Adam Hammill - and a few who just failed to progress - eg. Adam Morgan (note for future christenings: it's not a good idea to be called Adam) - but there have been a few unlucky ones.

I'm simply asking if anyone had favourite local lads that they wanted to succeed. for example, I was never that bothered about Mellor because i didn't think he was very good. I did however think Warnock could have been great, as could Thompson.

But Rodgers does give chances to the ones that listen and do what he tells them. If you don't you are history.

I thought David Thomson was gonna be boss and Dominic Matteo was better than Carra.

Matteo had a really good season for us, just before we sold him. And played really well for Leeds for a short period before injuries and age kicked in. I was miffed when we sold him.

The encouraging thing now is you can actually see that young prospects are being coached. Inglethorpe is having quite an impact. Look at Flanagan - I've rarely seen a player his age improve so much as a passer (not just in accuracy but also the way he fizzes the ball around), and it's largely down to Inglethorpe that he is now almost as comfortable on the left as on the right. Look at Sterling - much of his greater tactical nous is I'm sure down to Rodgers, but Inglethorpe made him into an attacker who is also a handy emergency right back. It's good stuff.

I'm never encouraged by any youngster with a bustling running style. I think that's why I knew Adam Morgan would never make it with us. I suppose I always think they're trying to compensate for a lack of class.

It just annoys me. Piss off with the bustling. Who are they trying to kid? I want players who glide.

Lee Peltier

Played for the same team I did, but a year older. By all accounts wasn't the best player in that team by any means, but had a fantastic attitude.

Also is married to a girl who was in my class at school.

Halmeister - rubbing shoulders with the stars.

Has had a decent career in the championship.

Yeah exactly. Wish I'd put more effort into it now when I was younger! Might have got somewhere. I was surprised when I saw he was captain of Leeds, massive step that. Fair play to him.

Has Kelly died? Have I missed something?

No, but he was brought back only to tell Rodgers he didn't feel right, then they eased off and let him come back when he felt more positive, and he did, played one game and said he felt way better, then faded again. It just doesn't seem good.
