LMA MEMBERS CHOOSE BRENDAN RODGERS FOR LMA MANAGER OF THE YEAR AWARD, SPONSORED BY BARCLAYS
At tonight’s League Managers Association 22nd Annual Awards Dinner hosted at the historic Old Billingsgate, London, Brendan Rodgers was honoured with the prestigious LMA Manager of the Year Award. The award, sponsored by Barclays, is voted by all LMA members, including every manager from the top four professional leagues in English football and goes to the manager, who, in their opinion and regardless of the status of his club, has made the greatest use of the resources available to him in the current season.
In winning this award, Brendan Rodgers has been named the LMA Manager of the Year for the first time, earning the accolade in recognition of his excellent season in charge of Liverpool in the Barclays Premier League by finishing in 2nd place, recording 84 points from 38 games. This is the club’s highest finish for five years.
Liverpool scored 101 goals in a campaign where they exceeded three figures in the league for only the second time in their history with the original record being set in the 1895/96 season. Only two other teams have scored more in the Barclays Premier League: Manchester City this season with 102, and Chelsea who scored 103 in 2009/10. By common consent, Liverpool have had an outstanding season, playing brilliant attacking football.
LMA Chairman, Howard Wilkinson, said: "There can be no greater tribute to a manager and his work than a tribute awarded by his match day foes and peers. This evening we applaud Brendan Rodgers as he receives that most valuable award.
“Liverpool Football Club's performances and results this season have provoked memories of some of those momentous years in the past when they had to contend with those two United’s, the first from Leeds, the second from Manchester.
“For Liverpool and Brendan, I'm sure we all hope this season marks the beginning of a new voyage and a new era.
“Brendan is not an ‘overnight’ success. Aged just 20, his career in professional football was cruelly halted by serious injury. Undaunted by such a devastating set-back that can have a stunning effect on one’s life, let alone career, he set off determined to get a coaching education and, along the way, he has filled almost every post in the game.
“His career as a manager has been eventful. Four years after securing his first job at Watford, and following much self-reflection after being dismissed at Reading, he enjoyed great success at Swansea before being appointed at Liverpool in June 2012 where he has made a huge impact.
“Being present at a match at Anfield this season was reminiscent of the truly good old days; long may it continue.”
Richard Bevan, Chief Executive of the LMA, said: “Tonight is a celebration of this season’s managerial achievements across the top four leagues in the professional game and massive congratulations are due to all award winners this evening.
“Brendan Rodgers is a superb role model to all aspiring managers and coaches as, despite being only 41, he already has over 20 years of coaching experience from academy, to reserve and then to first team football. I am sure he will continue to build on his success with Liverpool this season in years to come.
“The LMA system of members voting for awards always produces fascinating results. This is particularly true this year when, for the first time in our 22 year history, we have two managers whose performance could not be separated by their fellow managers in Sky Bet League 1, meaning we have joint winners of a divisional award.
“I would also like to say a special thank you to all the members who have contributed to yet another fantastic season.”

The Barclays Premier League Manager of the Year is decided by the Barclays Panel of Judges.
The Sky Bet Football League Awards are voted by all the managers in their respective divisions who again take into account which of their direct competitors has made the greatest use of the resources available to him in the current season.
This system of voting makes the LMA Manager of the Year Award and the Sky Bet Football League Awards unique, in that they are decided by the respective peer groups.
For the first time in 22 years there was a tie of votes cast for the Sky Bet League 1 award resulting in Kenny Jackett and Russell Slade being named Sky Bet League 1 Joint Managers of the Year.
The Budweiser FA Cup Manager of the Year is selected by a panel of managers and goes to the manager who has made the greatest impact on this year’s competition in relation to the resources available to him.
The LMA Special Merit Award is nominated by a panel of managers and is awarded for exceptional personal achievement during the current season.
The LMA Service to Football Award is nominated by a panel of managers and is awarded for outstanding, long and meritorious service to the game.
