Liverpool vs AM CL (0-1)

We’ve got the league. It’s fucking March and we’re in a chance of winning it with 8 games to go!

Sorry boys but I’m changing camp. I’m in the balls deep for the champions league now.

We are going to be our greatest side of 30 years winning the league.

Win the CL again and we will be our greatest ever side.

Ball deep indeed!

Time to show why Klopp has yet to lose a 2 legged tie with us.

Some of the responses here are a bit too much considering we turned over Barca last season to overcome a 3 goal deficit. I know winning the PL is everything for us because of the long wait, but the CL is still regarded as the top top prize in club football and watched by billions of people, and in case you have forgotten - we are the current holders. Fuck me - there is no way we should be just assuming defeat no matter how bad we have been playing, I love these European nights and never want them to end, it's one of the reasons I follow this club - the atmosphere created by the fans on these nights is immense. Also I cannot stand the fact that City may win this cup in place of us - that has got to really piss some of you that don't think we will get through this right ? It will send a nice message - no matter how many billions you secretly funnel through your club - European royalty is something different you fucking cunts.

I think Klopp might spring a surprise for this one with his tactics, personnel selection or both. Simeone did his homework to nullify our threat in the first game - now Klopp will need to come up with a plan how to consistently create chances against a team that clogs the middle of the pitch and is counter-press resistant. I could see something like this:

4-4-2:
—————-Adrian—————
———-Gomez——-VVD——-
Trent————————Robbo
———Hendo——Gini———-
Salah—————————-Ox
———-Firmino——Mane——

The main idea here would be to get an extra pacy attacker to complement the front 3 in Ox and have him, Robbo and Mané double and triple-up on their left flank while Firmino, Salah and Trent (and occasionally Hendo) combine on the right. This way we would always have a free attacker on each flank to switch the ball to and avoid getting stuck in the middle. Also having 4 forwards playing against a 4-man defense would give the likes of VVD and Hendo a lot more targets to aim the long balls at. Hendo and Gini would have to put up a superhuman effort to cover the spaces left by the attackers on the flanks while also maintaining presence in the middle, but if it works I think we can create serious problems for Atlético.

Just a few days before the 4-0 ass raping of Barcelona we had come off a less than convincing 3-2 at Newcastle where we needed an 86th minute goal to get the 3 points. This was against a Barcelona team that won La Liga and missing both Salah and Bobby (though i heard he's shit), while now we are facing an Atletico team currently 13 points out of 1st place in the league and sitting 5th, out of a CL spot.

The feeble never learn.

I don't believe he's done it this season, but last year Klopp sometimes used a 4-2-3-1 formation against parked busses. I agree he may change things up a bit and if he does i think this formation is more likely to happen.

Last season as you said we beat barca off the back of a struggling win at Newcastle but this season we've been struggling for about 2 months or so to break down defensive sides. Would nearly prefer to play the likes of barca than a team that wrote the rulebook in how to play mass defence

If he plays, I hope you're right. I have a sneaking suspicion we will see either Hendo, or if he's not ready, Milner, in midfield alongside Fabinho & Gini.
Yep. I was unimpressed at his performance vs Bournemouth (or any of his recent performances - though that goes for all of them) where he constantly gave the ball away (misplaced passes) and failed to find space for any shots bar one that flew into Row Z.

We will need to pass and move far better than of late and will need to be more inventive than recently. I would be very surprised if Klopp doesn't have something up his sleeve. I can't see him moving far from Fabs/Hendo to anchor the midfield. What formation he employs and who becomes the third midfield starter will be key. Unless we sign Werner today and drop Firmino into midfield there is a strong case for a shock inclusion of Keita. Simply because his stats indicate high passing success rates & tackles/interceptions. Lallana may be the other shock option, control in tight spaces and inventive.

Milner, Gini and maybe Chamberlain would be my choice, based on current form of Fabinho (shit) and Henderson's fitness.

I'd want Milner in the team deffo.

Lallana?! Christ no.
I wouldn't be massively surprised to see Lallana in the 6 role with Milner & Gini if Hendo isn't fit.

They don't have much in the way of midfield runners so that 6 role will be more of a playmaker than a destroyer, & Fabinho is way off the pace, so whilst I get the concern about how pedestrian it may seem on paper, it could actually be a very good balance if we have as much possession as we suspect we will.

There is no point in Klopp playing so much defense than attack when we are already 1 down. There is no need to defend at the expense of moderating our attack. I can see Gini and Ox playing in more attacking roles like the way Gini did against Barca. I think we will hit them 2-0

There is a definite need to be solid on defense, because in the unlikely event Atletico crosses the midfield line, you don't want to risk them scoring a goal because now you have to win 3-1 at that point, which is obviously not impossible, just not a position you want to put yourself in.

With basically a full squad outside of Alisson + European night @ Anfield + unimpressive (but well drilled) Atletico, i can't see us not making it through.

Atletico has given up the same amount of goals against in the league as us (in 2 fewer games) but scored less than half of ours, so while it will be more frustrating to watch until we break them down (plus their shithouse diving tactics), i rather play a team like them with limited offense than Barca who can give you nightmares with their firepower.

I think Klopp will have the team tuned in and ready to fuck these guys up. Welcome to Anfield, motherfuckers.

Our problems are trying to breakdown sides that play deep. I think we have become easy to play against if teams play defensively. Think klopp needs to change tactics a bit. Not saying full scale changes but definitely our current set up needs a good bit of tweaking as we've become very one dimensional. If a team plays open football against us we will rip them apart but very few teams will these days

Would absolutely go wild here and try something a little different. Beat them at their own game...

4-2-2-2 that Klopp has sometimes used in European aways, to give us grip in midfield. We need to start Wijnaldum on the bench and bring him on at halftime, completely pissed off and ready to score 2 in the second half, but I'm not sure it will happen like that.

Adrian
Trent Gomez Virg Robbo
Hendo Fabinho
Milner Firmino
Salah Mane

I think we need to break their ranks easier than last time cos they are gonna come here to waste time and shithouse their way to a draw.

We will win 3-1 imo but we need to link midfield to attack better than we have done in recent games, with Salah often caught deep behind 5 players and not off the last man.

I see your point, but maybe the 6 need to be a destructive player stopping any counters as early as possible and then Fab fit in even on poor form. They attacked in numbers in Madrid, so we need to stop that higher up the pitch. Can't se Lallana doing that.

If the two other midfielders are able to cover on the counter, this makes sense.
We will probably be sitting high up the pitch with quite a lot of possession around their box, so when we lose the ball and they look to nick one, we need some recovery pace.

AM, Will score a goal or 2. We won’t loose on the night but probably go out unless we do a barca esque performance again

Exactomundo.

IF we let Atletico score a goal or two, given how they hardly score any goals away from home ever, we will deserve to g out

Their top scorer has 7 goals and the week before they played us, they had won a total of 4 games in all competitions away from home.

Crucial stats ahead of our 2nd leg, thanks for sharing.... not that they need a win you fart brain.
