Liverpool v Southampton Match Thread

I thought he was the best player on the pitch. I was actually wondering if there was some news on this. But the only explanation I find plausible is that the LC game's line up has him at the focal point and we want him rested.

He was all over the shop defensively. I actually love that Klopp did this.

Great to see and will teach everyone coming in it’s not just about goals.

He was actually working pretty hard defensively even if he isnt savvy enough as a defender to be a midfieleder right now. Also we were dominating them in all ways during that half. Yet in the second half, Southampton had more possession and we didnt score.

I think it actually sends a bit of a bad message as he wasnt the only less defensively minded player on the pitch and he was taken off despite being the best player yesterday, even given MoM somewhere. Why was he taken off ahead of Salah or Mane for example? Previous accolades or current performence level?

It's Klopp so he will handle it fine and it'll come to good. But it seems like Shaq will have to adapt into midfield as he may not be given the chance to compete with the front 3 based on performance level.

This an old school Dreamy trick of commenting authoritatively on games he hasn't watched. From the perspective of someone who watched the game we were giving the ball away cheaply time and again, but I don't think Shaq was culpable in the slightest– and neither did Klopp. Not only did Dreamy not see the game, but I'm not sure he has any understanding of Klopp's reasoning for taking Shaq off. His reasons were that he changed formation to bring Shaq in, and that he realised that it was a mistake, because the players were not used to the system, and we were being left open defensively. Klopp's words:

It was good but you saw it needed to be because Southampton were not bad, they played good football. I had an idea and it didn’t work out 100 per cent. We changed system obviously to bring Shaq in a comfortable position. We wanted to make it a bit more difficult for Southampton to be really prepared for what we do. We knew the two tall boys in the centre would play so we thought to bring Mo there. Offensively, it was really good; defensively, we obviously weren’t used to it. We had the session yesterday and it was very strange – we couldn’t really go out because the real bad weather was over the city at our training time. We had around about 30 minutes with set-pieces included, which is very important because Southampton are really good with set-pieces. That we did that obviously helped because all three goals were around set-pieces.

Klopp was right to take Shaq off because we really were too open, but we do need to develop a system that allows him to be involved more regularly. He was excellent, and that FK was fucking beautiful.

A few of you are misinterpreting Klopp's poat match presser comments imo.

He didn't say that Shaq was bad defensively so had to come off, he said to accommodate Shaq we changed formation, but thanks to the awful weather they hadn't trained in the new formation at all bar set pieces, so defensively we were relatively poor.

The only way to change that quickly was to take Shaq out so we could revert to our usual formation.

He didn't say it was Shaq that was poor defensively, I actually thought he tried to impress the fact that it was the different system.

Quiffy McQuifferston is in the house.

Ha. That's boss.

Catchy, original, wry sense of humour, admiring without being an ego trip.

Suits his personality (from what I've gleaned of it from twitter & interviews, having never actually met the man).

Yeah I didnt listen to the presser. I was going based on Dreamy; what a mistake that was.

But I still think Shaq deserved the rest of the game even if it meant subbing one of the front 3. But hopefully this means we get to see it again in the LC. He was brilliant.

Kinda have to defend dreamy on this one. Shaq's positioning wasn't great. There were moments in the game where he should have been defending deeper. It wasn't a complete disaster though.
But I get the confusion, the front four were switching positions. Salah was upfront at times, then Firmino, Shaq was playing behind the striker then suddenly on the wing etc.

Its not that is it, its his assertion that ‘He was all over the shop defensively’
Which is a total blag because he didnt watch the game.

If Dreamy was deriving this opinion from observation of the game, or even from Klopp's comments, then he would merit a defence. As it is, he deserves being called out.

And I’ve already said that was based on what Klopp said after the game.

I have watched the fullgame since by the way.

We still look weakest in CM.

Mate you cant say ‘We were all over the place defensively’ when you havnt watched the game. Its ridiculous

That’s how I interpreted Klopps wordid.

Having watched the game now we certainly looked the most exposed we have all season

Pat. Stop. Its embarrassing.
You stated we were all over the place when you hadnt watched the game.
End of.

No offence, but Charlie Austin is fucking shit and he probably won't even play.
I bet it's either Shane Long alone upfront or him and Gabbiadini.
Either way, they're all shit and we're gonna win with ease.
Fuck jinxes.

Not to pat myself on the back or anything but hey...nailed it.
