Was there a lot of booing at the final whistle?
Not lots, but there was booing.

It's been a remarkable downturn in fortunes this season. We're now in the bizarre position where things appear to be getting sorted off the pitch, but on it we're looking hopelessly inept, rudderless, and lacking the belief and passion needed to play ourselves out of the position. We've been waiting for an improvement of form ever since the opening game of the season, and while there may have been glimpses of last seasons form, they've been too few to hold up as any sort of defence.

A huge part of me feels Benitez deserves until the end of the season - but we're becoming an embarrassment on the pitch without a hint of a revival.

It seems fitting to talk about facts:

7th in the League.
A hopelessly thin squad, and despite the best efforts so far this transfer window, one which remains full of inadequate players.
Out of the FA Cup
Out of the Carling Cup
Out of the Champions League

He's played himself into an untenable position, and for once, they'll be no easy excuses at hand.

No mate there hasn't, I've missed 2 games this season but have caught the rest and I've seen us play two 30 minute periods of good/decent football and one 10-15 minute period of excellent football and that's it, we've been mediocre (at the very best) for 95% of the season, which is why we're 7th and out of all of the above. I'd kill for us to be at half of our level that we were for the 2nd half of last season, it'd be a massive improvement right now.

At least this puts to bed Ryan's prophetic, "Oh the team can win with Lucas is in the middle, so we can sell Mascherano"

At least Mascherano would have destroyed some Reading players last night ...
Lucas was again NOT one of our worst players last night. He won the ball well and almost always played the ball forward. The problem is the front 4 Kuyt, Yossi, Ngog and Babel could do fuck all with it. Lucas gets the blame for everything in our team at the minute, and tbf it's fucking pathetic.
Why did we fail to break down a poor Reading side over two games? Oh I know it was the holding midfielders fault.

Lucas was shit. So was Insewer. So was Eggnog. So was Dirk. Midfield Morientes had some good, some not so good moments.

It was pretty horrible at times, and Lucas is as much to blame as anyone The cunt did *nothing* as usual.

Lucas replaced Alonso in our 1st 11.

That says enough. Blame the manager. Blame the player. I don't give a shit. Fact is, he adds nothing to the team. And when our manager persists with other players who are incapable of consistent 'attacking play', we're rather screwed.

Whatever the case, our season is over.

Lucas was easily one of our better performers. He's still very limited going forward but he didn't give away many balls and he won quite a lot too.

I really thought Ngog was terrible last night and so was Kuyt, Benayoun, Torres (before getting injured), Gerrard (before getting injured) and Babel as well.

Insua actually stood his ground most of the time. Carra and Agger looked solid enough and I even thought the latter actually looked like he wanted to be involved more further upfield. Degen was the one really positive I reckon, maybe alongside Cavalieri who looks like a very decent goalie.

Aquilani was awful in the first half and in the last 60 minutes of the game or so (ET included) but he had a good spell in the start of the second half for about 30 minutes.
I agree with everything bar the last line. He won the ball plenty of times, once or twice with real quality challenges. He also passed it very well and rarely gave the ball away. He also showed more heart for the fight than almost every other player on the pitch. The problem is he hasn't the vision or ability to play an incisive part in our forward play, but then I watched Aquilani play some cracking forward passes yesterday and fuck all came of any of them thanks to our shithouse front four, so it probably wouldn't matter if he did play some worldy through balls.... In fact I think Lucas played a great through ball for Yossi to go clean through on the keeper and rather than square it to an unmarked Kuyt he side footed it to their keeper. Lucas was again ok yesterday.

People need to lay off Lucas he's been nowhere near our worst player. He's never going to be brilliant but he's nowhere near our worst player at the moment. Several more 'talented' players should be hanging their heads in shame this morning. In fact the manager, the coaches and the owners should be hanging their heads in shame.

Yet again, and I'm sick of saying this now, a clueless and cowardly performance by Liverpool. We're not putting the same old problems right.

Gerrard and Torres are injury prone yet we have no cover for them. We have no width at all. Our defence is a joke. Carragher especially is pissing me off. Pointing and blaming everyone else when he's playing shit. And for fuck's sake Caraa stop hoofing the fucking ball out of fucking defence to nobody and instantly giving over possession. We've not got a strong squad and we're suffering from injuries but nothing excuses the lack of heart, bollocks, effort, willingness - whatever you want to call it that the players are showing. Fuck lack of confidence - it's downright cowardly.

Benitez is clueless. Inability to build a squad aside, he's seems unable to motivate his players out of the slump they're in and when things are going wrong on the pitch he's not willing to change tactics or even, at the very least, give his team license to attack - even when we're losing. I'm finished with Benitez now. If he's any pride left he should resign instead of landing the club with a huge payoff to sack him that we can't afford and he doesn't need.

I'm fucking sick to the back teeth of Liverpool at the moment. I'm sick of sitting freezing my bollocks off at th game and being bored out of my head. Watching Liverpool is like a temporary lobotomisation. It's mind numbing dross. I'm sick of people going on about how quiet the atmosphere is. Well make a fucking effort Liverpool and the fans may return the favour. The team performances are sucking the life out of the Kop.

I walked out last night. Just before Readings pen. It's something I've never done in 20 years. I was already embarrassed about of performance. Then the Kop, a minute before the end, started to sing YNWA. Something snapped inside of me. I was fucked if I was going to join in because that team on that pitch that gave that performance simply were not worthy of having that great anthem sung to them. I'm seriously seriously considering jibbing going the match next year for the first time in my life. I'm really at breaking point. I can spend the £1000+ on match tickets on something else. The thought of actually paying to be bored out my skull really rankles me at the moment. I want to support my team but I'm not sure how much longer I can do. The love has gone.

I couldn't help but wondering last night. Do the players REALLY want to win the FA Cup?

The performance against Villa in terms of sheer grit and determination was tremendous and then a week later we're looking like a team who doesn't give a shite really.

The Stoke game wil be very telling but I've got a feeling there are a few keyplayers in the squad who's not that arsed about the domestic cup I'm affraid (or hope - however you choose to see it).

Honestly I'd prefer a win over Stoke in the Premiership than against Reading in the FA Cup.

Sorry KHL but bollocks mate. We were fucking shit at Villa. We've been shit all season. The players should be arsed about every game they play otherwise they shouldn't be playing football at all. On last nights performance many of those players actually SHOULDN'T be playing football.

I'm really starting to HATE seeing Jamie Carraghers face. His complete disregard for everyone between him and the opposition goal keeper is fucking killing me. There's a stat on skysports at the minute, and not including last night (which must have added about 40) he has made 240 long "passes" at a success rate (success presumably being our player touching it first) 53%!!!!! So basically every other time carragher has the ball we give it away. His defences lapses are bad enough, his hoofball is fucking destroying us.

Good post.

One thing is to sit and swear at the telly another is to be standing at the ground watching the shambles upfront. No one can blame you or any other fan really for feeling like you do.

We didn't play that well but at least we showed enough will and determination to win. I thought it was one of few highlights of a dire Season so far.

Grinding out a messy win will never be considered a highlight KHL. We shouldn't accept mediocrity. As a club we should be much much better than that. I refuse to let us (the fans) be dragged down to the level the players and management team are delivering.

Well sometimes messy wins are the only way out.

And as the win came at a pivotal time and on the back of another unconvincing win against Wolves, I reckoned it could somehow kick-start our Season in the league.

The Stoke game will tell.

Haha. We need more than a kick start mate. More like a fucking Saturn 5 rocket up the players arses. Seriously, I'd have them doing nothing today but running laps of Melwood for about 2 hours and not allow them to talk to each other. Let them know what boredom feels like.

Haha about right...

I reckon they are all lying on the treatment table however.

Good post Sunny, I empathise completely.
I posted a thread along similar lines recently, then I thought that it was not right for fans to feel like this and it's at times like this we should stand up and be counted, but then I got around to your way of thinking..........
I can live with a team playing badly, or the luck going against it and the problems injuries bring, but to have no heart for a fight, and lack pride in the shirt is quite another thing, and on that the buck stops with the manager.
We could not make the replay last night, thank Christ, but it sounded as dire as anything that has been served up.
What makes it worse is all the "We're up for the cup" rhetoric that went on before from Rafa and the players, there are a lot of empty words being spouted.
He will have to go at the end of the season anyway, as there is no way we are going to make his "guaranteed" top four finish I suppose the question is will he go sooner?

regards

This Aquilani signing looks to be a bad one. Hes careless with the ball and a disgrace without the ball. I reckon any of us could waltz past him unchallenged if we played against him. I really hope he improves and fast.

Exactly Vlad. You can forgive and excuse a bad performance or result as long as you see heart and passion. As long as you see the players sweating blood and trying their absolute utmost for the cause. That's not there though is it? The fans do stand up. The atmosphere last night as usual, albeit not the most electric, started off fairly buoyant last night. And slowly, steadly boredom and nervousness creeps in and it's stifled.

As for the players "up for the cup" mentality I wish they'd just shut up. Actions speak louder than words and at the moment our players actions are equivalent to a faint whisper. They need to have a bit of self-respect and pride in themselves but sadly I really don't think many of them are that bothered about how embarassing they are. I'm genuinely downhearted and gutted about what's happened to our club at the moment. Proper down in the dumps. The hangover isn't helping of course.

I wouldn't go that for. He looks like he can pass a ball well and he's very miuch a one touch player. He's never going to be a ball winner though. He's hardly played for the team yet so let's give him a bit of leeway eh? I think he's got obvious quality it's just how we fit his style of playing with the team tactics that's a big question mark for me.
It doesn't look promising though does it Sunny. His little bump andrun passes aren't co
ing back to him. He's shifting and pushing forward and the ball is going backwards, so he's going deep to pick it up playing it into the channels but then by the time he gets up with play it's already been lost. I love aquilani, everybody knows that but his game relies a lot on pace, pace of mind, pace of passing, pace to the ball. He looks totally I'll at odds with our usual plodding monotonous build up. That added to the fact that carragher keeps bypassing the midfield totally and I'd say we need to change our playing philosophy quickly or we've got another keane on our hands.

Well that's the issue Oncy. He's obviously an intelligent give and go player. Do we have other players with enough intelligence to play alongside him. Gerrard I'd say and Torres but other than that.....
Mate it's typical of Rafa. Everytime he signs a player I think he's cracked it by signing a player with pace, or a player with ability to play a through ball, or a player who can dribble, but he plays them out of position or he asks them to a different job or he doesn't adapt our game to suit them.
Riera great at crossing the ball - we have no ariel threat.
Babel great pace up top - we play him left midfield.
Keane great in the hole - we play him everywhere but.
There's plenty more players who Rafa has failed to integrate into our team too. It's almost like his scouts say 'this lads a belter' and he signs them wether they suit his style or not. I'm worried about aquilani already because when he signed him I thought he KNEW he would have to change our play to suit aqulani as a new playmaker, but I see no sign of that. It's simply one out one in and the one in must do the job of the one out regardless of if it suits. It's so frustrating, I almost want our players to go out there and rebel totally, throw off the constraints and sort it out themselves.
