It was definitely hail. Tiny little white balls of ice that bounce off your windows.

Sleet can appear that way. Hail always does, but its only hail if the reason it froze is because it was driven up into the cold upper atmosphere, then fell when its weight wasn't supported by the updraft anymore/it hit a downdraft. It's not that common to see updrafts that vigorous in winter.

Sleet in contrast falls as snow/rain, then melts/freezes and forms a ball as it falls. Sleet pingers are almost always a feature of a rain/snow line, where the air column has both air temperatures above and below freezing.
