Liverpool v Chelsea Match Thread - League Cup

Klopp has been at the club long enough to learn that it is totally unacceptable to put Alberto Moreno on the pitch, however insignificant the competition. The guy lacks a brain and has no positional sense whatsover. When you need a left-back in the left-back position, Moreno is somewhere else.

Even though it is helpful to Klopp to be out of the Carabao Cup, it still hurts to lose. As soon as Hazard came on, you just knew he was going to tear Moreno to pieces.

Moses was giving him a hard time nevermind the best player in the league

Disappointed not to progress. Deserved more from the match. Need a result on Saturday and to use the silver lining of reduced fixture congestion to push on and win something this year.

Feel really shit after that. I knew something would give when that guy came on - but really was not expecting them to win after the way we were getting at them and then suddenly my worst fears about Chelsea comes to life. Their players really get on my nerve - ordinarily apart from Hazard and Kante I don't really like any of them because I find them fucking boring. However, since the money came to them the managers at that club have been consistent in getting players who have above average talent with very good game intelligence - they just know how to apply the pressure at the right moments. Every-time we have beaten them has been when we are at 100% or when they are having one of their player revolts against their manager.

We have no chance of winning if we are not on top of our game on Saturday. Fuck it hurts to lose gain !!!

Ahh but youd take this if it meant even 2 more points in the league. I didn't want the temptation to play any 1st teamers in the later stages. If you dont win this cup, it's not too bad to go out early. Fixture congestion and all that.

Basically, 'I didn't want to win your stupid Carabao cup anywaaay!'

Checking the team sheets it's arguable that we started 2-3 first teamers and they started 4-5. By the 70th minute that was still 2-3 for us (like for like subs) but theirs was now up to 6-7 starters. We did really well all things considered and I still can't get over VAR not disallowing their goal when it shows Barkley offside.

Didn't watch it. First game in ages I miss. Of course we have the squad to go further without risking to many from best XI. Just a shit draw that cost is in the end. So not to worried. We would anyway loose sooner or later so just as well here than the weekend.

In truth, I'm not arsed about it either, and judging by the highlights I saw it was pretty much a fifty-fifty game and we were playing more of our second stringers than they were...

I would have preferred it if Hazard hadn't looked so in form and confident and it's a shame we are no longer undefeated but...

I'd much rather we win our next game than last nights and if you would have given me the choice pre-match I would have said the same.

The fixture congestion malarkey in February is now out so that is a silver lining which hopefully can lead to silverware.

Fuck em... I really do hate Chelsea... I much preferred it when they were a totally unimportant shitty yo-yo London club.

Let's focus on giving em a beating this weekend.

Liverpool 1 Chelsea 2: Match Ratings

by Ben Johnson | Sep 26, 2018 | 7 comments

Miggy: 7
Had a lovely big stay on his line first half there, didn’t he? That said, made a smart save for a fella with a pear for a head first half. Can we put this fucker to bed now? I’ll play for the FA Cup.
Clyne: 6
Was in front of us first half there with loads of the ball. I was screaming at him to hit the line, but I think I was putting him off y’know. Not sure why, mind you. Got better second half but the drop off in quality of both full backs was stark. The starkest of cliffs. Literally a fucking big massive cliff, with quality at the top and Clyne at the bottom, stuck on the beach.
Jolene: 6
Hahaha. Adam Melia reckons he looks like he is a balloon animal. Made by a mad clown, sort of ran out of purchase when he got to his head. Is he shite? I think he might be shite.
Degsy: 6
Pre-World Cup Degs, but in fairness it’s his first game and was playing next to a party trick.
Moreno: 6
Invented a new tackle there first half. Yer, yer, yer was boss. Their lad got it into feet, he kneeled down behind him and then the lad legged him. Sublime. Not shite, but fucking hell we didn’t half miss Robbo.
Fabinho: 7
Would like to see him in a good side before I make any judgements, but as it stands after the first half I can only deduce that he’s a carthorse. That said, looked a player there second half when The Reds looked like a team. I don’t know, would have liked him to have kicked more people.
Milner: 7
Tried his best to plug a load of holes there first half. Felt sorry for him as he was playing centre mid on his Jackson Pollock with a couple of ponies at full back.
Keita: 7
Played well second half, but thought he was missing in action first. Great shot for the goal.
Shaq: 7
Legged it about, didn’t he? Huffed and puffed and blew fuck all down, really. If he’s a wolf, is he big and bad? Looked a bit like he might give you a legger, catch you and then cuddle you at the end. I don’t know either.
Mane: 7
Without his squad he looked less than the sum of his parts, whereas with them he looks more. Missed a partner. All Robin and no Batman. That said, reckon the lack of a full back attacking option overlapping him didn’t half kill him as a threat. The fulls killed us.
Dan Sturridge: 7
Scored again there, didn’t he? Two in two. Looked like he’s ran the National in a pantomime horse costume last 10, but nearly won it for The Reds with that one against the bar. Small margins, la.

SUBS
Salah: n/a

Waste of time.
Firmino: n/a
Done alright.
Hendo: n/a
Come on to box Hazard I think. Done well, but then he lashed in the winner so yer know, fucking hell. The Hendo squad will have their cocks out as we speak, batting one out.

Unless it's the red lenses, Barkley is marginally offsides. Too close for a ref to call it - so if there was no VAR, no issues. But there was VAR, so why was it allowed?
Morata & Cesar are ok as they're not interfering in the play.

Barkley

Not sure just how Morata is not interfering with play to be honest. And as for the free kick it came from, dont get me started. I'm not one for blaming referees but I thought he was on our house from kickoff last night.

Barkley

Thing is, Morata is clearly effecting the play on this goal, he's affecting the defenders around him and he's inside the six yard box as the goal is scored. I know with the way interference is interpreted at the moment it's not given as offside, but I've always thought the interpretation was bullshit.

It's the interpretation of interfering that allows the goal to stand

Although it pains me and I was hopeful it'd be disallowed last night I can see how it stood.

Well, we never cared about this anyway, right? Klopp did, and selected a strong team. Sarri and Chelsea did too. And it hurt losing, especially against these cunts.

I'm not sure we learned anything much, either. We wasted several chances to win it, but were fortunate that Hazard was only playing for 20 minutes, as we were dreadful in the first half. Nobody played brilliantly, but only one team had Hazard, and that team won. We need to break that cunt's leg on Saturday, and should have don it last night.

Mignolet (6) Good save in the first half, although it was only Morata. Decent kicking, no mistakes, can't be blamed for the winner really.

Clyne (6) Mediocre first half, as he was running the rust off, but he got better as the game went on, and got through an impressive shift against the dangerous Willian. Ventured forward a couple of times too.

Matip (5) Did well enough after a very wobbly first 25 minutes, but didn't really show enough authority and gave Chelsea too much time space and respect. Better strikers would have had a field day.

Lovren (5) Another who has played hardly any football, so wasn't expecting much. He was....a mixed bag. Made a lovely tackle one minute, and then totally missed the ball the next. Always looks as if he is carrying a giant mistake around with him at all times, just waiting to drop it onto the pitch like a huge, smelly turd.

Moreno (3) was very busy, and I liked his energy and commitment, but he has the brain the size of a fucking peanut and is the master of the ill-advised, rash challenge. Totally bamboozled by Hazard when he came on, and was one of several players he nutmegged/ waltzed past for the winner. Horrible.

Fabinho (4) In the first half it was clear why he hasn't played. He was shite. Sat too deep and didn't look at all comfortable with what he was supposed to be doing. He also has a horrible habit of doing one thing, and then not doing anything else straight after it. Makes one pass, or tackle, and then just fucking stands there and waits a bit before thinking about doing another thing. Got better after half-time - when Klopp pointed out that Fabregas, who can't actually run, was bossing midfield at 2mph so could you please at least run around near him? - but he shouldn't be anywhere near the first team. Also seems to have patented a weird tackling technique which he does when not actually running: he just sort of falls to the ground and kicks his legs out.

Keita (5) I was going to say 6, but thought that was much too generous. He was mediocre. Looked OK in flashes, especially attacking, and made their keeper work a bit, but looked clueless out of possession and was a liability defensively. Needs to improve, and fast.

Milner (6) We looked better when he started to take more control in the central positions, and he was trying to make things happen, but too many passes ended up coming back at him, or being given away because people made the wrong run. Tired at the end.

Mane (6) One of our better players on the night, and nearly scored with a decent effort, but he seemed to be playing in isolation, as the movement and runners he's used to weren't there.

Shaqiri (7) Full of running and invention, he was always looking to take the ball, turn and run at the Chelsea defence. End product and final pass or shot was lacking, though, and does he look quicker than he actually is? Still, a good addition to the squad and has played well in his last two appearances.

Sturridge (7) Always get an extra point for a goal, but very fucking tempted to take one away for the ridiculous open goal he missed. Also showed some horribly slack control from a great position for the second time in as many games. BUT, scored again, with a lovely hooked volley.

If he moves towards the ball, which he did, then surely he's interfering, just like Mane was judged at Spurs.

Fabinho is far from the fab midfielder we were hoping for. When Premier League clubs sign midfielders from Continental leagues, they often have trouble adjusting to the pace of the English game. Against Chelsea I got the impression that he was expecting more time on the ball than Chelsea allowed him. All is not lost, however, as he may well adjust to English conditions.

The offside rule has needed to be simplified for a long time. They should go back to simple offside is offside and then the only argument can be resolved by well placed cameras.

Fabinho will be fine, just needs a bit more time to settle. He was poor in the first half but very good in the 2nd. I'd give him a 5-6 for that performance in total.

We've talked about this before, although some will make their minds up about a player after 5 mins, but making your full debut in a makeshift side that havent played togheter before isnt easy.

I only saw the last 40 minutes (because I don't give a fuck about the Coca Cola Worthington Milk Cup).

However I was wondering what everyone thinks about Shaqiri's tendency to be be offside. Is he not being released early enough due to not having played enough and his teammates not having a grasp on what runs he tends to make or is a he a bit Cisse.

I made that point about Shaqiri's performance against Southampton, but was promptly sat on by a couple of posters who said I didn't know what I was talking about! 😀

I must have missed that.

I can understand making distraction runs to pull the opposition out of position, but there were a couple of occasions last night where he was clearly calling for the ball despite being obviously offside. It seems like something he will need to work on.

That was basically Rodgers best team plus Shaq, Mane and Fabinho wasn't it? Just made me so happy we've got Klopp. Hate this utterly worthless competition and glad we're out of it. All that happens is thirty quid comes out my account and I give my ticket away to some poor kid who inevitably watches a B team game
