Liverpool Res 1 Burnley Res 0
The TV cameras highlighted players at both ends of the
spectrum as Burnley Reserves fell to an agonising last gasp
defeat to Liverpool.
Clarets boss Owen Coyle attracted a posse of cameras,
photographers and journalists, all intrigued by a Premier
League manager still pulling on his boots.
But it was the gloves of new signing Jonathan Lund, looking to
start out on his career, which really caught the eye.
The 20-year-old goalkeeper shone against Liverpool's fluid
second string, making three excellent first half saves on a
night of precious few chances at Tranmere Rovers' Prenton Park
ground.
And it took a stunning 92nd minute free kick from Daniel
Pachero to finally beat the Clarets keeper, who did not
deserve the cruel sting in the tail, which came after Nik
Kudiersky saw red late on for two bookable offences.
Coyle started in attack, alongside last season's youth team
goals sensation Wes Fletcher.
And the teenager had a glimpse of goal in the opening 10
minutes, seeing a half-chance snatched away as he chested down
a left wing cross from Christian Kalvenes.
Lund was called into action for the first time midway through
the half, diving to deny Nathan Eccleston as the Liverpool
striker looked to curl the ball into the far corner.
The Clarets keeper again denied Eccleston five minutes later,
this time with a stunning low save to his left after Ben
Hoskin and Nik Kudiersky were undone by a mazy run.
And the former Leeds United stopper was again perfectly
placed, showing a safe pair of hands when Vincent Weul let fly
from distance.
Burnley weathered that spell of pressure and created their
first real opening four minutes before the interval when
Alex-Ray Harvey's penetrating run was unceremoniously halted
30 yards out.
Coyle and Scottish starlet Joe McKee lined up the resulting
free kick, which the latter cannoned into the wall of red
shirts.
Liverpool were a whisker away from opening the scoring in the
58th minute when a corner was flicked on to David Amoo, whose
instinctive header from eight yards flashed just wide.
But Burnley were more than matching their hosts, creating
their bet opening in the 70th minute, which saw Harvey force a
sprawling save from Martin Hansen.
Seconds later Kudiersky hacked the ball clear from inside the
six-yard box as for once the Reds found a dangerous low ball
into the danger zone.
Coyle finally made way for Michael King with just over 15
minutes remaining.
And with 10 minutes remaining a glorious chance to perhaps win
the game fell the Clarets way.
There best move of the evening eventually saw McKee bide his
time before picking out the run of Richard Eckersley, who
could not keep his far post volley down after ghosting into
the box.
Kudiersky, who was booked in the 56th minute, incurred the
wrath of referee Colin Harwood again in the 86th, clattering
into Eccleston in the centre circle and seeing an inevitable
red.
The Reds from Anfield thought their last chance had gone when
Pacheco blasted over from eight yards in the final minute with
the goal at his mercy.
But when Eckersley handled 25 yards from goal 90 seconds into
the three minutes of added time, Spaniard Pacheco arced a
superb free kick over the wall to snatch victory.
