Liverpool v Bournemouth Match Thread

Wijnaldum is class, he is possibly my favourite player, his close control and the first touch are just amazing. Motm

He set up the goal and he does have those qualities, but you're joking about the MOTM surely? He hit the backpass for the first goal and lost his man on the edge of the box for the second. Mignolet and a few others rightly bollocked him for the second goal.

Oh, and Klavan is shit. I don't care how much he cost or his status as a stop gap/back up. He's played loads this season and we always end up conceding lots of goals.

That's my point. It was the selection rather than the player himself.

That said Klavan instead of Matip was a headscratcher at the time, and the result confirmed that.

I don't think you can blame Lucas either individually, but it was maybe a bit of a poor selection from Klopp, playing an out and out DM against Bournemouth, when we should have had them on the backfoot. We've seen this too many times against lesser opposition, we play Lucas in the holding role and it doesn't really help us because we concede a few anyway. We had a couple of options who it might have been idea to give a go to, TAA or Woodburn for instance, with Coutinho at the tip of the midfield instead.

Anyway, where's Modo with his post match dissection of how to play the holding role properly, as opposed to how terrible Jordan Henderson does it. It didn't really work last night, did it?

The Matip decision was baffling, and to then throw him on as a 3rd centre back cost us again. Shite.

That Matip started on the bench? He had a back injury.

The decision to go 3 at the back when Coutinho had to go off sick obviously didnt work.
It put us on the back foot and gave the initiative back to Bournemouth. Instead of securing the 3 points it ended up costing us two.

I'd have liked to see Trent coming in instead.

Yesterday at least proved that Klavan isnt good enough. Some good games but to many mistakes and costly errors that have lead to goals.
Should move on in the summer.

Its funny reading the post game comments the next day without having posted much yourself. Klopp is a genius when we win games and a draw to Bournemouth makes him look like Woy.
The focus in pre season was obviously the attacking part of our play, but this pre season its extremely important to fix our defensive issues.
Pocchettino managed it at Spurs after conceding goals a plenty in his first season, so its not exactly impossible.

Just imagine if it was Lucas who plays Ginis backpass, I'd have been apoplectic.

A back pass like that can happen to anyone. Gerrard did it a few times aswell.
Gini was probably our best player for the rest of the game.

Pocchettino managed it at Spurs after conceding goals aplenty in his first season, so it's not exactly impossible.

It's true, it's possible that could happen.

I think the problem is two fold though, one, from perspective, we're used to the reverse. Since the post Evans era we've had a succession of managers who have, in the main, tried to solidify the defence before making us more expansive.

Of course Rodgers upset that apple cart, & instead of trying to right the cart, Klopp has decided to turn it into something else.

Secondly, Klopp's system doesnt seem at all set up to become a defensive unit. It's all about defending from the front. Pressing & pushing up the pitch with possession & without to deny the opposition time & space, if not the ball entirely.

You can make that work much better than we are now, but I highly doubt it will ever be something you could class as defensively solid.

A lot of our goals are also down to individual mistakes which we hopefully will see less of with better players in those positions.
I think Klopps system is much more than just that. I read an article the other day about his philosophies and the gegenpressing is a part of that obviously but not everything. But I think you're right that we'll probably continue to concede more goals than some/most of the other top teams but will also be in the top when it comes to goals scored.

Its also down to experience, which Klopp said in his post match comments, we seem to make some very weird decisions when under pressure.
The experience part and quality also goes hand in hand obviously.

Anyway, yesterday was shite and not worth spending any more time being upset about. There is a new game on Saturday, so lets just win that one.

You could swap Lovren for Klavan in that paragraph too

We've never been cut open or battered, not often anyway, but almost always gift goals. Better players in key positions will address that. And that doesn't mean Sakho at centre-half.

Sakho is doing great for a team that is expecting their defenders to defend and not much more; intercept, tackle, head, whack-it as if your life depended on it. In a team expecting the lions share of possession as ourselves playing against stubborn defenses and midfield's, he'd be called out time and time again as his technique, passing game and general handling of the ball does leave a lot to be desired. I a not too fond of his positioning either, which again, is less of a problem for a team like Palace where you won't expect your defenders to add up numbers in midfield and as such they are more stationary and find their positions easier.

In other words Sakho does well in a team that would more often than not chose to park the bus but no so much in a team that would expect to be in control and dictate play.

What we do need however is a defender like Andreas Christensen (the Alan Hansen clone). A player with pace to burn, a defender that's very clever on and off the ball and has the highest success rate of any Bundesliga defender out there when it comes to successful passes from the back and into midfield. As this exact player in mention is very likely NOT available however (he's seemingly heading back to Chelsea) we have to look for players just like him and perhaps, go all in on someone like Hummels, if Klopp and him are like bestest pals? Hummels would be damn close to be the perfect partner for Matip.

Hummels would be nice. We need players who don't make stupid mistakes.

Somehow we also need to protect Our CB's. To often Our CM is cut wide open and they are exposed. Also by attacking down both flanks we leave them too much exposed. It is not like we have poor defenders. They are Internationals all of them.
