Juventus have confirmed that Danish midfielder Christian Poulsen will join Liverpool for a fee of €5.475 million.

Poulsen, 30, joined Juventus from Sevilla in 2008 and made 33 Serie A starts in two seasons in Turin. He also anchored the Denmark midfield in all three of the country's appearances at the World Cup finals.

A club statement read: "Juventus Football Club can announce that it has completed the agreement with Liverpool FC for the outright transfer of Christian Poulsen for a fee of €5.475 million (£4.5 million) payable in two instalments.

"The fee will further increase by up to €1.2 million depending on his achievements during the contract period.''

Roy Hodgson has recruited the player as a like-for-like replacement for Javier Mascherano, who revealed on Thursday morning that while he enjoys playing for Liverpool, he is keen to leave England for a new challenge. Both Inter Milan and Barcelona are known to be interested in the Argentina captain.

Poulsen joins Joe Cole, Danny Wilson, Jonjo Shelvey, Fabio Aurelio and Milan Jovanovic in joining Liverpool this summer, and his international colleague Daniel Agger expects him to be a success at Anfield.

"Christian would be a perfect addition to most of the big clubs in Europe, so he will certainly fit in here," Agger said recently. "He is a top player and will make us stronger. We need to have big signings so we can compete and he is one of those players.

"Christian will improve the team. But we need more improvements if we want to be at the top of the league this season."

thats a disgusting price. fucking hell. all i can do is forget about it and pretend that he came on a free transfer
How is that a disgusting price? There have been far worse players being traded at much higher prices. Most sources quoted 6M, so to sign him for 4.5M its a good deal

It'll be a good deal if he can quickly adapt to the pace of the PL, anchor our midfield and allow Gerrard to attack from a CM position. If he's slow, poor at passing and constantly getting sent off, even a free transfer would be too much.

I was actually quite optimistic about Poulsen (in spite of the chorus of hatred on here) until I read Agger's comments - not quoted in full above - saying he hoped Poulsen would be able to get used to the pace of English football. If even his international team-mate has those kind of concerns, we probably should have too.

because he was of no value to juventus, he's 30 they didn't want him in the team anymore and wanted to get him off the wage bill. we did them a favour by taking him. so how we ened up handing them 4.5m is beyond me. a couple of million at most would have been a good price.

if we signed defour for 15m and sold him next year for 10m you'd be disgusted wouldn't you. this is no different, we've by next year he'll be worthless and we'd have taken a hit of 4.5m. we should have let juventus take that hit instead.

That doesn't follow though Dantes.
If I buy myself a new car but hang on to the old one for a while, which is a bit of a banger but just passed it's MOT, just to make sure I like the new one, and after a few months I find I am very pleased with my new car and look to off load my old one.
It is not worthless, just because I have no need for it and can't drive two cars, it has a market value and Poulsen had a market value, which given his experience, class, we needed him and with a few years left in him yetm, it seems pretty reasonable.
If we didn't pay that someone would have, and possible more, but he wanted to come to us.
Something is worth what someone will pay for it old chap.

poulsen isn't a car. think of it as garbage instead. to a recycling company your garbage is worth money to them because they use it to make energy and products. but do they pay you for your garbage? fuck no. they do you a favour by taking off your hands.

but he had nothing to offer juventus. jesus. what about degen, he's not more rubbish than poulsen, but he was useless to us and we got nothing for him. or riera, he's worthless to us and we ended up with 3 or 4 million.

riera is younger and better than poulsen is. so explain to me how we haven't been fucked. we should have got him for a lot less. just like other clubs have taken our garbage for a lot less.

I think the Poulsen transfer is Masher insurance.

Would have preferred a far better player tho.
More than insurance mate, he is THE replacement.

Good price for a decent player who the manager knows well. Also spares us budget to improve in other areas. Good deal.

Haha. So essentially, Poulsen is an old banger, that the owners had no real use for, and that only just scraped through its MOT.

A glowing asessment, Vlad! ;D

In all seriousness, I have no real idea what to expect from him, but I don't have very high hopes. Perhaps the one glimmer of hope, is that he played some of his best football under Hodgson before. Hopefully he can recapture whatever it is that he had, and make a name for himself again.

Poulsen is not a rubbish player.

However he was rubbish for Denmark in this world cup. I had them down as a dark horse, but they were quite poor in defense. They probably made the highest number of unforced errors in this world cup.

Sometimes I wonder whether people actually think before they post. It seems like Dantes in this particular has case has just closed his eyes and banged his head against the keyboard.

You are comparing an ever injured 26-year-old FB who can't even make it to the Suiss national squad in Degen with a player who's been pivotal in both Schalke 04 and Sevillas good runs over the past years 8 years? A player whom despite beeing told by the new manager in Juve that he wasn't needed still choosed to stay and fight for his place and then eventually won the manager and lots of the fans over?

A player who's been playing as an important anchor for Denmark in several World Cups and European Cups and whom the current manager rate as one the best and most committed players on and off the pitch he's ever managed?

Doves are crying.

Agger, Saric, Kohlert, Hansen and now Christian Poulsen (to the far left).

OH HAPPY DAYS!
what crap. It's 2m quid now (affordable) and 2m quid in a year (hopefully under new owners) it's a very shrewd deal. And IF we pay the add ons it means we have achieved. I'm not over enamoured about signing him, I really don't rate him but for a club with not a pot to piss in, it's sensible.

he's not as bad as some would like to believe. i hope he's a bit pacier than what i think he is, but he's a solid DM who will hopefully replace Lucas in our starting 11.

Thoroughly, massively, underwhelming and coming in as a replacement for a player i really like well..... great signings should strengthen the team no?

Wake up.

I have a feeling Poulsen will win over a few fans after a few crunching tackles. He won't be bullied that's for sure.

We have too many nice guys in our team, perhaps it's time to add a bit of 'nastiness' to the mix.

I didn't want him here but I will support him now that he's here.

2million upfront isn't bad. Defour was the dream signing but a larger outlay would have been needed.

It's not a matter of great signing, its a matter of spreading the Mascher money wisely as and when we get it.
The plan is , as I am sure you really know, cover the central defensive bit , and bring in players in other areas that we need...left back and striker. So yes we lose Mascher which I will be disapointed with too but for the greater good of the team we bring in three players that build up the squad depth and make us stronger.
